Baby Names

My daughter's name

Updated post: We found out we're having a girl! Older brothers are Owen and Calvin. Top names are Eleanor (Nori), Penelope (Penny), and Rosalie. Second string names: Audrey, Clara, Juliet (Jules).

My hang ups: 1). Last name is a very common one syllable color name. Is Rosalie too much of a color word, so she'd have a double color name? 2.) I love Nori as a nick name (definitely more than Nora). But me and husband are Nicole and Cory. Is this weird? It's almost like a combo of our names, and it rhymes with my husband's name. I envision yelling "Cor!" across the house and Eleanor yelling "whaaat". :) 3.) Penelope is such a pretty name but it's a mouthful, and I'm a huge nickname-r anyway...I don't know if I'd ever really call her her full first name.

Thoughts? Votes? Middle name will probably be Joy (family name).

Re: My daughter's name

  • Hmm I'm torn. I like Rosalie and Penny, but I'm not sure about them with a color last name. I'm not a fan of Nori. I think I would go Rosalie if you plan to call her that. If you think you'll do Rose or Rosie, then I don't know...I guess it's a draw for me.

  • I envision calling Rosalie her full name, with maybe occasional Rose, but not regularly. More like "Rosalie put your shoes on. Rosalie...Rose, I said put your shoes on." :)

  • I actually like Eleanor best, but I hate Nori as a nickname. 1) It's too Kardashian and 2) it's sushi

I like Rosalie better than Penny, though both are good names
  • Love those three. Penelope is probably my favorite. Second would be Rosalie, I don't think of double color at all "Rosalie white/Rosalie brown/etc". Eleanor is third for me, only because how massively popular it is right now, and Nori gives me a kimye vibe and I hate myself for that!

  • Rosalie is my front runner right now for if this baby is a girl. So long as you last name isn't Red, I think you're just fine :) I think your other two options are solid too, and I love Eleanor Roosevelt as a namesake. Penelope would be on our list except I have three aunt Pennys. Yes. Three - Mom's sister and the wives of two of Dad's brothers.

  • Rosalie is my favorite.  We almost named DD Rosaria and I basically love all names that contain Rose.  Classy and timeless.  I don't hate either of the other two I just find Penelope quite trendy and Eleanor just a bit overdone.  It's very popular in our area and I don't love Nori with your names, it's closing in on cheesy with the smooshnames becoming a "thing".  Clara is fantastic as well just don't love it with Calvin.

  • My vote is for penelope :)

I love Eleanor but I am not a fan of the nn Nori - all I can think of is sushi.  Penelope is lovely but I am not a huge fan of Penny but I do really like Poppy. I love Rosalie and her nn could be Roz so that you don't have Rosie/Rose with a color last name (although I don't think it would be weird if you did).  Audrey is pretty but way more popular. Clara is such a pretty name! I love it. Juliet is also a really beautiful name!! Although Jules is nms but I think it could grow on me. I have considered all of these names if we have a daughter and I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them!! They are all timeless names. Some are becoming more popular and for me that would be a factor. Below are the names in order of my favorites with the 2014 ranking for the social security office beside them.
    Clara (108)
    Rosalie (310)
    Juliet (255)
    Penelope (42)
    Eleanor (78)
    Audrey (36)

I think Joy as a mn sounds great with all of them. Your daughter will have a beautiful name!

  • I like Rosalie best and don't think it would be too much with ln. I think Nori is cute, but the fact that it's a combination of your names makes it cheesy, honestly. Just not a huge fan of Penelope or it's nn options.
  • LOVEEEEE Rosalie.

  • Love Penelope, but Penny with your last name sounds discriptive. Poppy is my favorite nickname, but also would be descriptive (maybe not as much?)
What about Nelly? It's a close second NN for me and I prefer it with your last name

  • I think that if you are going to call her Nori or Penny you should just name her that.
I agree that Nori clashes with you and dads name.
I do like Clara & Audrey!
  • Nori as a nickname - No. Screams Kardashian
    Clara - Awesome
    Audrey - Awesome
Rosalie - As long as your last name isn't Red, go for it. I see nothing wrong with something like Rosalie Black or Rosalie Brown.
Penelope - Awesome. I am not a fan of Penny as a nickname, but I do know a Penelope that sometimes goes by Elle, and I like that better.
Eleanor - Love. I like it without a nickname, but if one is being used, I like Elle or Nora........ditch Nori.
    Juliet - Love.

I like all of the names.  The only one I wouldn't pair with Joy is Juliet, simply because I don't like alliteration.

    1) I would never think of Rosalie "Turquoise" as a double color name.  I think that you're totally safe there.
    2) Nori as a combo of Nicole and Cory is a tad weird, but I wouldn't let it stop you.  And it's a nickname, not a smoosh-name, which makes it less weird.
    3) Not really sure of the issue?  Penelope and Penny are both nice, and I don't think that Penelope is too long, especially if you have a common, and I'm assuming, short last name.

My favorites of your list are Rosalie, Audrey, and Clara.

  • I don't watch the Kardashians, but can't help being exposed to a lot of their BS. But I didn't know Nori was somehow a Kardashians thing. I do think of sushi, though... But I still liked it until you said it is your celebrity couple name. No.

I like Penelope. Penny is nms but I don't really think it clashes with a color last name. I see a lot of Penelope happening on this board. I know two babies with that name and Poppy as nn.

I like Clara best, of your list.
  • Clara or Penelope
  • I'm not loving the Nori nickname, for whatever reason. Eleanor is a great name but I think I like Rosalie and Penelope much better. Penny is a great nickname, too. It probably depends a little bit on what exactly your surname is, but in theory I don't think 'Penny White' or 'Rose Black' is too much.

  • Love love love Rosalie!
  • Rosalie is amazing! Love it and it sounds beautiful with Joy. :)
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Rosalie is beautiful, classic, and not too trendy.
  • Eleanor all the way! That's one of my daughters names and we call her Elle or Ellie.
  • Love Rosalie and Penelope. The double color thing would never have occurred to me. If I had to choose, I would probably go with Penelope just because Rosalie gives me vague Twilight flashbacks.

Eleanor I'm not a huge fan of anyway, and I agree with the sushi comments about Nori. Also, with you and your husband having the names that you do, I would definitely side eye the hell out of that and assume you picked that nickname as a parent combo name.
