The Exercise Thread

Alright mamas, who here is still managing to work out on a regular basis, and what have you been doing for workouts?

After 2 weeks of sick kiddos and next to no sleep (and, consequently, no energy for exercise) I'm trying to get back into it and I could use some motivation. And maybe a place for accountability. Hearing what others have been doing to keep fit motivates me to get off my butt and make it happen. So post what you're doing for exercise, and maybe bump the thread whenever you get a good sweat on.

This morning I hit the large set of outdoor stairs in my neighborhood. I did 5 sets up and down, and my legs were definitely shaking by the end. But I alternated the way I climbed each set, and last time I did that I was hardly even sore the next day. The first time I did all 5 sets just normal stair - climbing style and DEFINITELY felt the burn over the next two days. I kinda like that post - workout soreness, so I'm wondering if I shouldn't alternate the way I climb each set?

I'm hoping to make the stairs a weekly thing. I'm also in the process of joining the local Y so hopefully I'll be adding swimming and yoga to my routine. Oh, and I have a few pregnancy fitness dvds that I really like, but it's hard to find time to do them when the girls aren't around to interfere. The great thing about the Y is that they have on site child watch for $5/kid for 2 hours while you work out. Awesome.

Re: The Exercise Thread

  • I do a resistance training class twice a week and it usually includes a little cardio. I also get in one 4 mile walk per week and try to get 2 of those walks in if I can. I can feel myself get weaker and more tired as the weeks go on. I'm hoping to keep this up through December and maybe January if my body can handle it! Stairs sound awful! Lol I would like to add swimming to my routine but I don't feel like buying a maternity suit.

  • I'm still managing to finish 5 mile runs 3 times a week (with the exception of the week I was sick with a head cold/migraine). Now that the weather is cooling it justs so much more bearable. It does take a lot out of me. I come home, shower and nap. I want to add swimming too but I also don't want to buy a new suit either. Plus, it's getting cold which makes me fuss about getting into water.

I'm not able to do much thanks to my placenta being so low, but I still manage to get 2+ mile walks in on weekends as long as I do them in the morning. By evening I can't- we spent an hour grocery shopping last night and by time we were just about done I started to ache.

Do you have access to a gym?  Where they have classes you could take a class or meet up with a friend  to do some cardio?  Honestly that is my biggest motivator.  I love seeing my 'gym friends' in classes.  I take a butts & guts (resistance training) class on Mondays, play tennis on Tuesday and Saturdays, Wednesday I take a kickboxing class, Thursday I meet my friends for cardio and we yap yap yap the whole time we workout and Barre on Friday plus some cardio with friends.  While this may sound like a lot of exercise I've still managed to gain 10+lbs lol, but at least I don't feel too awful.  Although the resistance classes are definitely getting harder with my extra weight + the weights we use.

  • Aw man, good idea for a thread! I'm struggling to work out at all tbh. After work all I want to do is chill out. I need to not get lazy though because if I can't do it now, how will I do it when baby is here? I'm a gym member and they do classes. I don't want to do cardio filled classes but I like barre class and things like that. I was so good about working out before my BFP and now I'm just like 'give me ice cream'....

  • I am fitting in a light 2 mile jog maybe 3-4 days a week. The rest of the days I try to fit in a 2-3 mile walk and or a pregnancy fitness dvd. The only time I can jog is before ds wakes up so I get up at 550 to squeeze them in during the work week. So some days are harder than others. I feel so much better overall this pregnancy. It has really helped putting a greater emphasis on staying fit and I think my weight gain has been much better managed.
  • At work we had a little fitness seminar and me and a few others started doing little exercises every hour. Things like wall sits, squats, leg lifts, arm curls, desk push ups, whatever! We usually each do one leg and one arm work out each hour along with stretching. It's not a lot but it really helps refresh you instead of just sitting at a computer all day and I'm glad we're doing something. We started as 3 of us doing it and we have about a dozen now that have joined us!
  • I do soul cycle classes a few times a week. The classes are really fun, I think it's the music that make me feel pumped up and full of energy. Does anyone else do spinning classes?
  • I'm fitting in a low impact cardio daily with 100 squats, 100 push up (leaning on a counter cause I got told to get off the floor) and I started doing these (https://www.fitpregnancy.com/exercise/prenatal-workouts/abs-have-it) for a safe ab workout. I was trying to get in shape before I found out I was pregnant, just had to modify what I was doing.

This was me with ds. I took the kick back and eat for 2 literally. Lol not often us moms get a chance to eat and do what we want so I don't regret it. But since I ended up in bedrest due to PIH and pre e last time I want to take advantage of moving while I can.
  • @llybeck that's a really great idea to incorporate little mini workouts into your day. Sometimes I fall into the trap of thinking that since I don't have a block of 45 minutes or an hour or whatever, then I just don't have the time to get a good workout in. But just squeezing in a few sets of squats or lunges every day or so would make a big difference.

Up until May I commuted everywhere by bicycle. Then we were given a car, which has been a huge blessing because my dd's new kindy and the other dd's daycare are too far for me to bike to and make it to work on time. But it's been horrible for my fitness level.

Calves are feeling a bit sore today, so I guess the stairs did their work.
  • I have been walking and am feeling good enough to get back into running. I am eventually going to end up in a pool though I'm sure. My hips are incredibly sore so I don't want to push that and my husband and I go do soccer drills when we can
  • Great thread! I'm running 2-3 miles 2 or 3 days/week, and doing pilates, yoga, or barre most other days. Since a few weeks ago I have to run 90 sec/walk 30 seconds to keep my heart rate in the 'moderate' zone but I'll do whatever I have to if I can keep running through most or all of the pregnancy!

  • @Msantana87 I'm spinning a few times a week too and I love it. I'm also doing weight training and a little running. Next week I might add in a barre class. I feel so much better when I exercise, though it definitely takes a lot out of me!
  • I started training two times a week with a woman back in May before I got pregnant, so I've just stuck with her because I know I'll be lazy beyond belief if I don't. My mom has been paying $250 for me to do these 8 week sessions, so I'm being held pretty accountable, haha. But I've been doing a lot of weight training and conditioning. She's only just started modifying my workouts in the last couple weeks by having me lift less weight for more reps. This is probably my last session with her, it'll end around the beginning of December and she won't start another till after the new year, and doing that one would put me right up to or past my due date! I'm not that motivated even though I know some women do it just fine, haha.

  • I walk to campus every day, which ends up being 30-60 minutes depending on which classes I have. I try to get to the gym to cycle or swim a couple times a week, but I haven't been very good about that.
I definitely need to keep moving though because I'm hungry All The Time!
  • I run 2x a week, yoga 3x and spin 1x. Still keeping up with it and totally agree the cooler weather is helping with running big time. it seems counterintuitive but days I push a little harder I actually feel better for the rest of the day.
  • I do a combination of things. Mostly I set my fitbit for 20k steps a day goal. I run in the mornings with my dog 3-4 times a week between 4-7.5 miles each. The long run is on the weekend. The mornings that I don't run, I walk about 2.5-3.5 miles. During lunch, we have a walking group and we try to walk about 2-3 miles fast. Then when I come home, we usually take another 1.5-2.5 mile walk with the dog, hubby and kiddo. Most of the time I easily hit 20K and often times closer to 25k steps daily. This past week has been closer to 19k due to weather though.
At work, I sit on the 12th floor and I make it a point not to use the elevator. So I end up walking up and down the stairs 2-4 times per day. I really hope to keep running until January which will be exactly 30 weeks for me. After that, I may just walk. I cancelled my gym membership for now, so I hope the snow and ice doesn't come into play until later. Minnesota can be quite brutal in the winter.

With my first, I walked every morning 1.5-2 hours with the dog until the week I delivered. And it really helped quite a bit.

  • I have not done a thing. I'm not proud, but I haven't. I had horrible MS until recently and now that I feel better and have the energy I feel like I hardly have the time.

I want to start doing some yoga or something. I also haven't gained any weight yet so I'm afraid that working out isn't going to help me on that front. I would like to tone and stretch to help with delivery. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it next week at my AS

I am so with you. I had a dance video that I was doing pretty regularly before my BFP. One of my first signs that I was pregnant was that I was too winded to get through the whole exercise routine. Then when the morning sickness hit I completely stopped exercising and haven't started back up again. It's the thing I feel most guilty/stressed about during my pregnancy. I need to remotivate myself. Im just so exausted after working with 6 year olds all day which I know is only another excuse.
  • @JLaVO888 Ikwym! Reading this thread has me feeling all sorts of guilty. I'm very impressed with these fit mamas. I'm going to try up my workouts a bit this week... Went for a two mile walk today which to me isn't strenuous at all but it's better than nothing I guess. I'm going to try go to barre on Tuesday... I think I'm trying to convince myself anyway...

  • @exwk If we're bump buddies in real life we could hit the gym together and motivate each other. It's so much easier to work out with a friend I think. We moved to a new town two years ago and all my close girlfriends are too far away to work out with me. Boo hoo 60 second pitty party for me.
  • @JLaVO888 if your gym has classes definitely check those out. It's such a great motivator for me anyway to work out with others!!!

Haha, yeah I started this thread hoping to find increased motivation, and instead I'm feeling lazy and guilty in comparison to many of the other mamas! I keep reminding myself that right now I'm just about 18 weeks, and with my last pregnancy I ran a half marathon at 18 weeks! So I've been that fit pregnant mama. But this time, not so much...

I'm still slightly sore from those stairs on Friday. The soreness makes me feel a little bit better, lol.
  • For those of you still running, aren't you having problems with having to pee several times??  I get so frustrated having to stop every 1/2 mile because it *feels* like I have to pee, then when I go it's hardly anything, but it's very uncomfortable if I don't.  Occasionally it won't be so bad and I can go 1.5mi or so without having to stop but that's rare and I assume it's because I'm dehydrated from the day before.  Any tips?  I do drink a cup of caffeinated tea in the mornings which I think contributes to having to go more often but my tea is my motivation for getting out of bed at 6:30am and deal with getting my kid ready for the bus.  No way I can cut that out!

  • @FutureMrsCaesar I had that problem during the first tri, the second tri it's eased off a lot more. I'm not sure if baby isn't pressing on my bladder as much or if I've gotten used to it. I do have this fear of dehydrating so I've started to chug a lot of water before I run and sip water during my runs. I'm really normally not in the habit of drinking water while I run so it helps me actually go when I do stop to pee.

  • Check out all of the runners here. That's really cool.

I am currently doing kettlebell circuits 3x per week, bodyweight circuits for cardio 2-3x per week, and one or two 45 minutes walks per week. It would really tough keeping that up first trimester, but everything is a breeze now.
  • I was so sick with MS the first three months, the thought of exercising was overwhelming. I am a personal trainer and not being active was not my usual but I literally could not do anything without vomiting. Forward now to 18 weeks and I feel like a NEW person. I have way more energy, in a much better mood and really feel back to my old self...minus being really tired come 8pm. I walk everyday at least 30-40 minutes, generally in the mornings and have taken up Prenatal Yoga twice a week. I personally LOVE it and it makes me allocate time to stretching and just having a bit of CALM time. I highly recommend it. This past weekend I did an interval training of 2 min jog (running makes me want to pee my pants) and 2 min fast walk for about 30 minutes. I was suprised at how tired I was, given I'd been running 3-5 miles 4x week before pregnancy. I try not to beat myself up when I can't get out for a workout. Instead, I'm just a little more strict on my diet.
  • Using this thread as motivation to get my butt moving during my lunch hour and also doing something (not necessarily exercise) besides plopping my big old behind on the couch when I get home from work. Thanks ladies!

On the agenda tonight - work on sanding down the beautiful buffet table I bought that someone decided to paint some awful yellow color.

  • I've been doing a 2 mile run once per week (usually on Saturday...just to prove I can still run!) I also do prenatal yoga 1x per week and try to go on a few walks with my dog.

I admit it's nothing compared to what I used to do fitness-wise, but I guess it's better than nothing! Pregnancy, along with a new job, has led me to become a bit lax but I'm trying not to totally fall off the wagon!
  • Finding motivation after a long day at work and studying part time is tough ! I have been doing a 2-3 mile walk around the park and taking my little dog with me as extra motivation to get out ! I've only got 2-3 weeks before snow hits here though and then I'm not sure what I will do - anyone enjoying swimming ? I'm having my first baby and strangely at a little over 18w I already have a very prominent bump so finding a swimming costume might be hard
  • So today I was running off a bunch of copies in a secluded resource room. I thought of this thread and @llybeck 's post about incorporating little mini workouts into the day' so I did sets of squats, leg lifts, lunges, and curtsy squats while waiting for the copies to run, instead of just checking my email or bumping. I'm pleased to announce that I'm already feeling it a little bit.
  • PSA for runners: I finally broke out the support belt this week and am so glad. It makes such a big difference! If you're thinking about getting one (and this probably applies to walkers too) definitely do!
  • @ceds07 FTM so I am not super familiar with support belts - are they all created equally or do you recommend a certain brand?

  • @flowerpower5838 I'm honestly not super familiar with the different options so I apologize! I have a Gabriella and I'm positive that I bought it last go around based on recommendations/reviews. I can't speak for all of them but this one has two sets of velcro so you use one to actually put it on and then the tabs in the front to adjust the support which I really like - sometimes I start off super tight and then need to loosen it as the run goes on ;-)
  • Finally managed to work out yesterday! 20 minutes of yoga poses to work the legs, arm, back and pelvis, all per reccomendation of my doctor. Finally feel like the knot I've had in the lower back since I got pregnant is working out. More to come today!

  • I find that I'm exhausted all the time and just don't have the energy to do more than walk a couple blocks a day with ds. Luckily for me, dr says that's fine, she usually does not worry about encouraging excersize for women pregnant with multiples. Best of luck to you women, and you should be proud of every minute you manage excersize.
