Re: The Exercise Thread

  • I'm no doctor, but I definitely agree that growing two humans is enough work!

  • I was so glad to find this thread and hear what other folks are doing. I ran a half marathon on Oct. 4 (about 90 seconds slower per mile than my PR) and since then have been trying to mix it up more. My goal is to run 3-4 miles at least 3 times a week, plus attend pre-natal yoga or yin yoga twice a week. Then I will also throw in some spin/bar/megareformer classes local studios near me if I have the extra time/energy. I think it's better to mix it up and I have ClassPass. Running is getting tougher as I'm getting bigger (I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow) but I invested in some belly support products that will hopefully help with that!
  • Well you ladies are making me feel guilty lol - this is my first pregnancy but I wasn't really active before the BFP. I don't know just me and exercise do not get a long but I do have a gym in my apartment complex so maybe I'll start going on the treadmill once again to get me going and do some light dancing since that's what I would do a lot before I got pregnant.

  • I also recently got classpass and it has been SO HELPFUL getting me to exercise. Signing up for a class at a given time and date, with a late cancel or no show fee, is strong motivation for sure. Not sure how long I'll continue spending the $100 a month, it's a lot, but it was just what I needed to keep going instead of telling myself I would do youtube videos at home (was NOT happening). Still run/walking 1-3 miles a few times/week but my legs are burning during the run now so may have to just walk soon which is a bummer.

  • I really wish I could run still. I love running and what it does to my mind (and legs!) But last time I think I pushed it too hard near the end, and I'm pretty sure a waddle-sprint towards the finish like during my last 5k at 32 weeks last pregnancy greatly contributed to a particularly mean case of SPD that hit me hard afterwards, so I'm playing it safe this time around. But I'm hoping to get back into running as soon as physically reasonable after birth.

I've managed to keep up my Friday morning stairs routine. I've also started doing curtsey squats after my last set of stairs, because I've found them to be extremely effective for working out that utter butt/hip area. I need to get back in the habit of doing my circuit videos with hand weights, though. I think that'll be my goal for next week--3 times minimum.
  • @kitteh81 have you tried spinning? For me it's the only cardio comparable to running and definitely easier to manage as the weeks go on!
  • BAHH I've done NOTHING these past 10 days... I've slept and slept... Thought about going for a run and went back to bed. Thought about it the next day and went out for a walk to the car and then walked into a brunch restaurant. That counts right? ;)

  • I don't belong to a gym and I'm not really in a "hip" area that has lots of exercise studios so I've had a hard time finding any kind of prenatal classes that are near me. I may start going to a yoga studio near my work that has a prenatal yoga class once a week simply to try and see if I can make any mom-to-be friends. In the meantime, anyone have any online they would recommend?

  • I'm still running 2 days/week but it's a 30 sec walk/run. My previous 28 minute 5K time is now 39+ min but I'm still gonna run/walk my way through a Turkey Trot in a few weeks.

REALLY enjoying prenatal yoga once/week, recommend it to anyone!

Have tried spin, may need to switch to that when running isn't possible. Also doing barre or some kind of strength training 1-2 days/week.

Despite this I'm gaining over a pound a week even though I'm eating fairly reasonably. I"m going to say baby is having a growth spurt

I hear you!  I'm still exercising 5-6 days/week (with a few missed days the past week due to a sinus infection, but finally on the mend!) and I eat very healthy but I still gain weight very easily during pregnancy.  I've never actually 'counted' calories during pregnancy, but I know there's no way I'm eating enough to account for the weight gain I have some weeks.  It can be frustrating but oh well, the end result is worth it :)

  • Hah @soxfan9968! I'm kind of in the same boat. Been keeping up my daily walks with the dog but have totally been skipping the gym simply because I don't feel like it! Ms was so bad the first few months and ive been bad about making an effort to get back to the gym!

I'm also slacking on the workouts, and sneaking at least one piece of dd's Halloween stash every day. This morning DH brought me a bag of pastries and I ate every last one of em! A chocolate croissant and two long John sized fruit turnover things. It's so unlike me! But damn, did it taste good.

So I finally did a workout video yesterday, and tomorrow I'm hoping to get to climb the stairs first thing in the morning. Now that I've written it down I really actually have to do it! I've got to leave the house by like 7:45 in order to make it happen, so hopefully the toddler lets me sleep tonight.
  • @kitteh81 no!! Don't don't do it!! Join me and @MNGrl24 on the couch!! Come on over to the comfy dark side... We have cookies! Lol

Ok, after months of pure laziness I finally went for a (very slow!) 2 mile run. It actually felt great! I'm going to try to work it back into my schedule regularly. That is, as long as my pelvis doesn't hate me tomorrow. Last pregnancy the running triggered and then exacerbated SPD pains. That's actually what finally made me stop running--I sprint-waddled to the finish line during a 5 when I was 32 weeks along. I wanted to finish in fewer minutes than I was weeks-pregnant. And it worked, I finished in under 32 minutes. But my pelvis hated me from then on. Couldn't run again during that pregnancy without horrible pain.

So I'm Definitely going to take it slow, but it felt so great to be out running again. Like I'd rediscovered a part of me that has been lost for a couple of years.
  • I've been walking every day for a month.
I started with slow 30 minute walks. But gradually, the walks became faster without me forcing it.
Then I realized I wasn't tired after 30 minutes. So we bumped it to an hour.

Today, we walked 3.5 miles and climbed the steps to the track 4 times in exactly 1 hour. I feel like that's pretty fast walking.
We'll try to make it an even 4 tomorrow.
I'll let you know if that pans out.

Honestly though, the walking is really making me feel good!

  • I think I'm going to have to downshift to walking instead of running. My crotch has been achy all day and I definitely don't want to go down that route again. Walking doesn't quite scratch that running-bug itch, but it'll have to do. Glad to hear it's been working wonders for you, @jstanton0822

I've been walking with my dad. This morning, we set a goal to complete 4 miles and do the steps 4 times in under an hour.
    And we made it!!! Yay!!
I'm not sure we can walk much faster than that. But we will keep it up like that every day.

Today, the belly started to ache a little after the second mile. I found that if I tighten my core muscles, the ache went away. I think of it like hanging on tight to that baby while we walk super fast! It worked for me.

By the way, I have no support belt and I'm wearing my regular yoga pants. So its all up to my core to hang on tight to that baby!

  • Does anyone have experience with a maternity support belt that could make a recommendation? I did a 3 mile treadmill run last night and was pretty uncomfortable. I'm still doing spin and some weight training, but sometimes just want to get outside for a run! Thanks.
  • I just got a support belt and new running shoes and it's had to say if the belt is helpful because at almost 26 weeks I think I just need to stop running, it's gotten so uncomfortable and I'm only able to run/walk a mile at this point anyway. Pretty bummed about it. But will keep using the belt for walks and see if it helps

  • I miss running so much, but walking has been great in the meantime. Love the idea of a support belt, my belly aches sometimes after workouts- will have to give one a try! I had to stop lifting weights after I pulled a muscle in my back :( that's another thing I'm excited to pick back up after the baby is born!
  • Kudos to all of you still maintaining an active workout schedule!

I'm trying to find a studio that offers prenatal yoga classes that fit my schedule, and the one I went to last pregnancy is just so expensive and has gotten even MORE expensive since I was last pregnant. So I called just to see if they have any unadvertised holiday deals, and it turns out I still have 4 sessions left from 2.5 years ago! They're going to let me re-activate them, so that's awesome.

I also have a maternity swim suit coming in the mail and I'm working on getting my YMCA membership up and running so I can go do laps in the pool. The best part is that they have a kiddo zone with child minders that's only $5 for 2 hours. So I can do that when DH isn't available to watch the girls.

I've been pretty crap at working out this trimester, but I had a really crazy semester at Uni (Still not over yet! Ugh) and next semester should be much more reasonable, so hopefully I'll find more time to get my sweat on.
  • I feel like I should do an accountability post. I haven't worked out too much in the last few weeks and feel like I have just filled in the extra time in my schedule by eating Christmas cookies...

So today, I walked back and forth to the gym and worked out on the stationary bike. I did a few light free weights too. We are planning to do some snow shoeing this week too (we decided to take our annual ski vacation this year even though I am not skiing this season). I'm hoping to recalibrate a bit this week - more workouts, fewer cookies! Anyone else need to restart?
  • Pfffttt... The last few weeks, my idea of working out is going up and down the stairs. I'm so darn sleepy lately. I don't know if it's the short winter days or third tri exhaustion kicking in. I tried to shovel some snow off our driveway today. There wasn't even an inch on the ground yet so I figured it's mostly me just shoving it out of the way. Neighbor's son saw me and ran out with his shovel and shooed me away to go inside and he'd take care of it. So, there went that tiny bit of a workout option.

Yes! We finally joined our local Y and I've done a few rounds on the elliptical. They also have a lap pool, which I plan to try out tomorrow.

I'm also planning to check out their yoga classes, I'm trying to decide if those classes will suffice or if I should splurge on a Yoga Works package for their prenatal classes. The ones at the Y aren't specifically prenatal, so I dunno.

Once it warms up a little I'd like to get back to climbing the long stairs near my place. I love how stair climbing works my backside, and I was hoping that the Y would have some Stair Master machines, but they don't. So for now I just climb the 4 stories up to the kid's area when I pick up do from her activities. But it only just barely scratches that itch.

Keep posting in here when you work out mamas, it helps motivate me!

Yes, I'm ready to get back into my workout routine! We have been so busy & I have def been indulging a lot! I'm nervous for my weigh in at my appointment next week! I bet my midwife will get on to me a bit! I mean this always happens around the holidays tho, so I'll get back to it soon & feel better about myself!

My usual routine is walking 4.5 miles twice a week and doing toning/strength training twice a week. I just feel better about myself when I'm staying consistent...which I haven't for about 2 weeks! Eeekkk!

  • Swam laps for 45 minutes this morning. 8th was intimidating because I'm not much of a swimmer, and most of the lanes were filled with old pros gliding expertly through the water while I splashed around like a hippo with a kick board. Oh, and catching a glimpse of my butt in my maternity swimsuit was less than encouraging. But the point is that I did it! And it was great exercise, plan to make it a regular part of my routine for this last trimester.
