I have unofficially decided on a woodland themed nursery because I had a piece of art that I bought MONTHS ago and hadn't hung up yet. In my head, it goes perfectly with that theme with out being baby/cutesy (which is what I prefer). I also happen to already have a rug that flows perfectly too!

I *may* change my mind after we find out the sex next week. I just don't see it being very gender neutral so if we are having a girl, I will most likely change the theme.

    **Edited for words

I think mine's getting some kind of animal theme. Over several years of wildlife photography, I've got about a half dozen different animals sticking their tongues out. I always thought they'd make a cute collection for a kid's room. :)

Yes I'm leaning towards cute animals for a boy nursery too!
    If I have a girl, then I don't know yet. :)

I found a site with the cutessssst felt mobiles!!! Check out lovefeltmobiles on Etsy!

Soooo today I decided to ultrasound my own belly again! I really wanted to find the sex of the baby cause my parents are coming from Brasil on Friday and they leave right before my actual anatomy ultrasound. I wanted to be abLe to tell them...
Baby has grown a lot in the past 3 weeks! So cute! Was sleeping but hiccuping and occasionally moving arms and legs. I could NOT find out the sex though! Legs were crossed!!! This mystery is killing me!
Loved seeing my sweetie though. :)

We have dinner almost every Sunday with SO's family and every week they're asking me questions about baby, pregnancy, etc. This week the question was "Are you craving weird things?". Why does everyone want to know that? I try to divert the attention to SO but he is pretty similar to me so he doesn't do a good job at reading my signs. lol
Seriously, how does a person stop herself from saying something like chalk and cow chips? I need to take lessons on being sincere before this baby comes!
There actually is a condition some people get during pregnancy called pica where you crave non-food items like chalk. I have a friend who totally craved dirt during both her pregnancies. Its so weird.

Something to consider about nurseries is that so many moms from my first BMB are now changing their kids nurseries to toddler rooms. I personally find the concept kind of ridiculous. I think it's super fun to get into a theme, but also keep in mind that your kid may outgrow it super fast and a couple years after that have a super strong opinion about what they want. We just kept ours very neutral. There's no theme per say, more of a color scheme, general paintings hung up we had in the house, and then some baby specific things but not an overwhelming theme. I just wanted it to be somewhat generic and timeless so I wouldn't have to change it any time soon

Nah I don't want to overdo it. The issue is that I am not trained in obstetrical US, so I dont know the specific movements I have to do with the probe to get a potty shot. I tried unsuccessfully. I guess I'll just have to wait like everyone else ! :)

I know, that's half the fun (not poking fun at people with pica - that would be awful)! Disclaimer: I'm the black sheep of my family, so when people start asking about personal stuff I say outrageous things to make them stop before they get to something that'll end in a huge disagreement or, you know, an aunt telling my mother I'm Satan. Most of them just make polite conversation about nothing now and I ask lots of questions about their families. Most people love talking about themselves so much that once you get them rolling, they'll totally forget that you both lead interesting lives.
  • My old cat had insane pica! She would eat plastic bags, styrofoam, cat toys.... It was crazy and I couldn't leave anything out!

Anyway, about the nurseries: I'm doing a Lion King nursery! It will work for a boy or girl since I still don't know.

I just can't bring myself to spend more that $40 on a baby mobile, certainly not over $100! lol It's only going to be on the crib for a limited amount of time. I mean, I guess once baby is able to reach it you could use it in another area of the room somehow as decor but $135 is just too much.

I made DD's for just that reason. It's origami elephants and I just couldn't see paying $60+ shipping (from Europe) for something I could make for $10 and a few hours of following YouTube origami steps.
Plus, it hangs entered over the crib from the ceiling instead of the crib, so it hasn't moved yet.

As for felt animals, Target had a set of felt woodland ornaments that a friend got on clearance and re-purposed into her son's mobile. Maybe you could try that to get similar results to the crazy expensive Etsy ones.

  • We actually didn't have a mobile. I didn't want him to get used to it if he slept fine without it. Like don't fix what's not broken. (Basically didn't want to create a habit before establishing what kind of sleeper he was etc). Once he was older we bought that light up aquarium (I think it's little Einsteins?) and that thing was amazing. Seriously soothed him when we would put him down at night. He still has it in his crib!!! lol.

  • My friend had some plastic animal figurines from Wal-Mart or the dollar store and she spray painted them gold for a baby shower... so cute!! We are going to move my son out of his nursery and let him choose how to decorate his "big boy room," and move the baby into the nursery. It's already gray walls with blue and orange accents, but I may change up some of the smaller decor for fun :-) We did mostly elephants with my son but it was pretty low-key.

As I've been thinking of nursery themes and palettes, I had set my mind on gray walls with turquoise blue and orange accents, too! Now for girls I don't know, I can only plan boys for a reason… Soon I will know if I'm right or wrong. :)

I was set on gray either way... I was going to do pink and orange for a girl or blue and orange for a boy. It's also pretty modern... our whole house is super modern.

Yes same here, I like a modern look and our house is super modern too (to give you an idea, my kitchen countertops are red quartz. You don't see that very often. :) ). I have this current attraction to gray, I think gray with pink and a pastel green look cute for girls.
  • Paging the healthcare mamas ...@thaisac1   @AmadorRose I can't think of anyone else, sorry. I'm sure you ladies get exposed to tons worse at work, but what do you ladies do about working with a patient with MRSA? Should I be good with diligent hand-washing and gloves? I left a message with my OB/Midwives office, but I haven't heard back yet.

Luckily, I'm in a clinic and my PA recently had a baby, so she's very sensitive to all things possibly contagious. It has been a very long time since I've been around MRSA - we had a guy this AM who thought he had it and I asked someone else to take care of him while I handled musculoskeletal (read: non-contagious) issues. If that is in any way an option, I'd go that route...partially because I'm super skeeved out by all things rashes and mucus these days and partially because I don't know just how strong my immune system is yet. If it isn't an option, hand hygiene and gloves are your best bet.

Also, for everybody - bath & body works sells hand sanitizer that won't dry your skin out like Purell or Germ-X. It was a lifesaver when I was in the nursing home and it smells great! I'm prone to dry skin as it is, so I'll be stocking up to avoid the industrial sanitizer that's out everywhere.

I'm not sure what kind of setting you're in, but if it's hospital, nursing home, etc. make sure your supervisors know you're pregnant. I know it may seem like common sense but I'm not sure how far along you are and if you're still keeping it quiet. Totally worth spilling the beans.

Oh I spilled the beans a long time ago- can't really lift heavy kids anymore. He's a hospital bound student. I can have his RN do his trach and g tube feedings that I would normally do while I'm working with him, but they aren't able to sit in and help him facilitate lessons like I normally would. I might just have to get creative with what kind of instruction I give him!

Can ou explain the context? Do you work in healthcare or are you just concerned about MRSA in general?

If you work in healthcare, patients who are known to be colonized or infected with MRSA will be flagged and contact isolation will be implemented. This means gown and gloves before you go in the patient's room, and of course wash hands before and after like you would do with any other patient.

If you don't work in healthcare, what is your specific concern? MRSA is taken very seriously and all hospitals need to comply with the contact isolation precautions above, so you can rely on your healthcare providers to do their job when it comes to caring for MRSA-colonized patients.

    Does this help?

Just to clarify a point (and sorry if this is already obvious to everyone): If you touch a patient with MRSA, you won't catch a nasty infection. The issue is that we are all colonized with Staphylococcus aureus, so what we don't want to do is to come in contact with MRSA because bacteria can transfer antibiotic resistance, so you don't want your own S. aureus to become MRSA. But even if it happens, it will only be an issue IF you develop a Staphylococcal infection (let's say, an infected skin wound, or endocarditis), etc - so it will be pretty unlucky if this sequence of events happens to you. If it does, most MRSA still respond to Vancomycin; and there have been new antibiotics recently released that also cover MRSA.

He's a hospital bound student and I'm his case worker. They said it is colonized MRSA isolated to his trach site. He does have a lot of secretions, though. None of his nursing staff is gowned. Perhaps he's just a carrier and I misunderstood. Hopefully his med staff can give me better info when I see him next.

Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifying. Colonized means that the Staphylococcus aureus that colonize his body are MRSA. Does not mean he has an MRSA infection (unless there is a clinical infection, I don't know but the healthcare providers should know). The precautions I mentioned above apply: gloves and gown. Basically you want to avoid any part of you to touch him, to avoid his MRSA Staph to come in contact with your own, "normal" Staph and transform your Staph into MRSA (in which case you will also be colonized).
Again, as mentioned above, this does not mean you or your baby will catch an infection; but precautions are very important because we don't want colonization with such resistant bacteria to become the norm.

I left a message with my OB/Midwives office, but I haven't heard back yet.

    @thaisac1 @AmadorRose Thanks ladies!

    @thaisac1 @AmadorRose Thanks ladies!

Eta: I changed my username because I got paranoid after I posted, but apparently the old one still shows up...
  • @k&elizabeth - I was so confused!

In trying to figure out how to change my picture back so I'm semi-recognizable to the group, but it is being dumb.
  • @K&Elizabeth I just wanted to add that if he has MRSA in his trach site and is coughing up a lot of sputum you might want to wear a mask while working closely with him. Very noble work you do by the way.
  • Why haven't there been Thursday ticker posts for a few weeks? Are there no more Thursday people here?
  • So I just vomited so forcefully that I peed a little. Thanks, baby. You better be a good teenager.
This happens to me almost every time, even if I just peed. It's terrible! I also get little red dots all over my eyelids and sometimes below.

  • So, I fell today. :( my shoes slipped on the floor and I fell on my hands and knees. It was not a bad fall, but of course it makes me worried and makes me realize just how vulnerable I am - I cannot afford to fall!
Not wearing these shoes again at work, that's for sure.

I'm so glad it's not just me!

@roseshadow873 I'm sure there are... someone has to start it. You should start it.

  • After the scare last night, the husband and I had a long discussion... I'm just not made for being pregnant. I had already decided to get a five year birth control after baby... But DH wants to go all out and get a vasectomy. We've talked about adopting since we were kids, and that's a legitimate option for our future, but I feel like he's taking an extreme, and that worries me because of how young we are. We know now this baby is a girl, and I'd like to *try* to give us a son that's made of us at some point.
I don't know. It worries me.

I would say go for an IUD instead of something permanent, especially if you're young... there's no reason to make a permanent decision when there are easy long-term birth control options that are reversible down the road *just in case*.

I was wondering the same thing! I'm a Thursday person too. :) I guess it never occurred to me to start one!

This is how I feel. I don't know how to talk him out of it, especially because he's dead set on only having two children, and wants to adopt the other. I'm all for adopting! I just don't want to eliminate that option, especially when I'm already planning a preventive. :-q
