Crafty Mamas?

I thought it might be nice to have a thread to chat about the homemade touches the folks on this board are preparing (or would like to prepare) to welcome our little ones home. Whether you knit, crochet, cross-stitch, sew, macrame, build furniture, build things out of popsicle sticks, paint, or just drool over projects on Pinterest, I'm interested in hearing what everyone's got going on. Progress pictures as your projects move along would also be fantastic!

For me, project number one is knitting two of the Hue Shift Afghan pattern from Knitpicks, one for my little one and one for a friend who is due seven weeks later.  Project number two is a bit more nebulous: I've promised my husband that he can have a disco ball mobile for baby (since I won't let him install one anywhere else in our home), but I'm starting to suspect I might have to build it myself, since I can't seem to find one to purchase.  This could be interesting...

Re: Crafty Mamas?

  • Oooh fun! I just started crocheting a gray and cream striped baby blanket. After this i plan to make an amigurumi fox (dh and i are debating colors, im thinking just white, he prefers a traditional orange fox color).
  • Loading the player...
  • I've knit two newborn cocoons with hats, and crocheted a third. Currently in the middle of a baby afghan. Dh's grandma passed away a couple of weeks ago, and being, apparently, the only grandchild who is crafty, I inherited a stack of pattern books and a box of yarn. Woohoo! I get super yarn crafty during pregnancy, and it completely goes away after giving birth, so my plan is to use up all the yarn in the next six months!
  • I'm itching to get some baby crafts going, but it has to wait until we know the sex/nursery theme. In the meantime I should probably work on DD's Halloween costume. I only started sewing it yesterday and apparently dinosaurs have a lot of pieces

  • I'm in the same boat as @sprocketsngadgets. I'm waiting to find out the sex and I also have a TON of projects to get done around the house, as we just moved from a tiny apartment to a house with actual living space. I'm trying to stretch my decorating budget as far as possible so we can save for LO and all the stuff we're about to need.

What kind of crafting are y'all into? I dabble in everything but I'm dying to crochet some cute hats and cocoons for LO, as sewing can get tedious for me and I'm not very good at knitting.
  • Yay crafty mamas! I am in the process of crocheting a pouf for the nursery - need to sew and stuff the inner liner before I finishbit off and just haven't had the time! We are also decorating the nursery by installing a reclaimed barn wood accent wall! The wood is from DH's family ranch so it will be a little piece of home for LO - the problem with this project is DH wants to move, so wood is all prepped and ready to install wherever it is!
  • I got in a huge chalk paint phase over the summer and refinished all of the furniture in the room baby will share with our youngest. We also bought and refinished an old armoire, since the room doesn't have a closet (we added a closet rod across the top after pic was taken). Next project is putting up abc's on the wall (I probably won't DIY due to current work schedule and lack of motivation).

  • There used tone a crafy moms board, but it died when thebump revolt occured. I'm in.

  • I crochet in the Winter. But at the moment, I'm loving doing appliqué on kids clothes... Most of them go to my 20 month DD but I also sell them on my Facebook page. I have so much fun on pinterest :)
  • I would love to get some baby projects going! If only I could decide on what project to do first, unearth the correct supplies, and clear a free space to do it in! I'm suffering from a creative backlog many, many years in the making, lol. I just located my stash of layette patterns yesterday, but I don't have a designated sewing space at the moment, and it's harder for me to get excited about sewing little boy things. (I'd been drooling over vintage hankies and tablecloths, dreaming up some darling outfits before we got the news that this LO is a boy.) So now I've started thinking about finishing the baseball-themed baby quilt I set aside when I found out my DD (who turns 15 on Saturday) was going to be a girl... But first I think I need to get back to the nightstand I've been resanding for her room, since it's sitting in the middle of our garage. Then I'll need to find a crib, and start planning the nursery... I've sewn a crib set before, but I'm not sure I'm up to it now. I'd also love to knit or crochet something for baby, but my yarn skills are minimal at best.
  • I like to sew! I'm not exactly an expert or anything, far from it, but DH bought me a sewing machine a couple years ago like I requested and I have fun with it. I can't follow a pattern (I plan to try some out though, just never really attempted it) but I've done some things following tutorials. I made a Tinkerbell costume with a tutu for DD to wear to Disney next month, I've made several pairs of flannel and cotton PJ pants for her, and I have other plans to make her other things with all the fabric I bought on sale. I prefer making things up as I go or following a tutorial, I feel it gives me a bit more freedom.

I also like crafting random stuff I find on Pinterest. I make a lot of our holiday decorations just from inspiration pictures I find. Sometimes I look at the directions, other times I just make it up as I go based on the picture. My dad has told me that when I was little I always amazed him because I could take a piece of paper and make it into art. So I don't necessarily need a set of instructions when I do something. Honestly I just don't get a ton of time to sew or craft because of chasing an (almost) 2 year old around. I wish I had a bit more time, but when she's a little bit older I look forward to making stuff together.

  • As soon as we find out what this nugget is, I plan on DIYing a lot for the nursery-- along with bibs, blankets, clothes, etc. For our son, we were stuggling a bit so he got a lot of handmade stuff from me. I want to do the same with this one.
  • I love to craft and am obsessed with Pinterest and Etsy. Unfortunately, I tend to do mine on a project by project basis rather than master any one technique. I am currently sewing Elsa and Anna dresses for my daughters' Halloween costumes. I'm hoping to have time to turn myself into Olaf, make Reindeer antlers for the dog and help my husband with his Kristof outfit. (I may have bitten off more than I can chew.)

I haven't done anything for baby yet, and probably won't until I know the sex. My husband is about to embark on a bunk bed project for our daughters. He's trying to build some that have some Scandinavian details.

  • YAY CRAFTY MAMAS! I love crafting (and I love spending 9 hours on pinterest only to be too tired to actually make anything too)!! I have been scouring the web for ideas because we are doing a Harley Davidson type-theme for LO.  Problem is...I am CHEAP and refuse to pay gobs of moolah for someone else to make stuff.  I found a SUPER easy pattern for making crib sheets yesterday that I am pumped to try this weekend.  Mostly because it's impossible to find black crib decor that doesn't have some other color with it.  We are Team Green so I can get started whenever I find the motivation (anyone have any to spare?).
DH and I have been battling over how to build our bed too...cos I'm already feeling like a turtle on it's back trying to get off the mattress on the floor currently.  That might be a tad more imperative than crib sheets at this point though.

I'm generally the same way but luckily my grandma taught me to crochet before she passed. As a kid, I thought it was cool that my art projects were useful rather than just decorative.
  • I need to get started on my projects but here is my list thus far:

    - knit baby booties in a few sizes (for those on pinterest- I've made these for lots of friends and they are a big hit: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/309481805616921324/)

    - Knit baby blanket

    - Quilt for baby's crib- toddler bed (this is the one I am going to attempt: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2015/06/08/tiny-tile-quilt/)

    - Mobile for crib. I am thinking of sewing some birds from my scraps and some new fabric. (this is my inspiration: https://www.etsy.com/listing/120555841/nursery-bird-mobile-baby-cribcot-decor-8)

My husband thinks he's going to make the baby a crib. We will see if he actually does that.....

With less than 6 months left, I need to get started!!
  • No baby projects yet, but I made these for DD a couple weeks ago. $2 leather shoes are so much easier to watch fall apart than the $20 Robeez ones :)
As soon as we know the sex and I can pick out "theme" colors (DD was yellow and gray for her quilt from her Nana, month stickers, photo book etc) I will be making this baby month stickers and probably a prop for the pictures.
In the meantime, I'm working on crocheting a stuffed Loki doll for my sister for Christmas. So far it's a head and neck - at this rate it may be for next Christmas :-SS

  • I'd like to make my baby's first pair of shoes for when she's an infant. Can anyone suggest the best material to work with? I can sew so I'd prefer that than knitting or crochet.

@kimey1 - the ones I made DD are from this pattern: pinterest.com/pin/63120832255542044/
I got a lined leather (almost like vinyl) so they are soft inside.

  • I'm a crocheter! I've made so many little blankets for other people's babies, now I get to make one for my own!

I've got tan, blue multicolor, and a bright red. The red is a different yarn than the others to give it a little texture variation.
  • @mc123mc I love that quilt!!!
  • So many seamstresses on this thread! I'm so jealous.  I definitely won't be knitting myself any maternity clothes (it takes forever and I hate to seam), so the fact that @kristinint12912 can just makes me green with envy.  Same with all of you making practical items like crib sets and baby clothes.  Then again, learning to really sew is a bucket list item for me, so perhaps now is the perfect time.
  • I do embroidery so won't make any baby projects til we've finalized a name. And I've been majorly slacking with how hellish I've been feeling. Mailed out a bunch of Halloween buckets last week though. I need to make DS a pumpkin shirt before October is over. He had to wear his apple shirt to the Halloween fair, whoops! I'm such a terrible mom ;-)

  • The old board had a weekly check in on Mondays and included 1. What you accomplished last week 2. What you were hoping to accomplish this week and 3. A get to know you question. I feel like one thread can get so long and I hate checking back on it, so I thought maybe it would be nice to do a check in of sorts.

I guess brother/brother will have to do. @pinottoparenthood you'll probably like this I think I remember you like seersucker (or I may be confusing you with a different bump crush).
OMG those bloomers are so cute... it makes me want to cry !

Will have to specify for this new LO not to make bubble shorts but a diaper cover.

I've done super basic stretchy leggings for DD (jersey knit fabric plus elastic) because she's super skinny for her height. I'm hoping to have my sister teach me some tricks when she's home from grad school next - she sees dresses/blouses for herself.
Or do you mean like to sell on Etsy?
