1st Trimester

How far were you at first ob/gyn appointment?

Hi ladies!  I just found out on Saturday morning that I'm expecting, yay!  According to different calendars I've used, I think I'm due June 17th.  I'm going to call tomorrow to see what my office says, but I was just wondering when you had your first appointment.  I know it can vary by practice and past experiences, but I've seen ranges from 4 to 12 weeks for the first appointment.  I may go crazy by 12 weeks, haha!

Re: How far were you at first ob/gyn appointment?

  • I believe with my first, I went at 8 weeks for my first appointment. We just found out we are expecting our 2nd but honestly I have no clue when I got my period last..
I'm guestimating aug. 30. I'm calling the doctor today to see when we can come in.

  • I found out before my missed period so i went in for blood work only before the 4th wk. First ultrasound was between wk 4/5. Went every week till about wk 8. I was experiencing some bleeding and had a previous mc. Thats why i went so often. I went every two wks till wk 10. Next appointment a month later at 14wks. I am 12wks going to NT scan today. Had blood work during 10 wk appointment.
  • I have my 1st apt this fri and i literally have no clue how far along i am! Im hoping 8-9 wks. Excited and nervous xx
  • I was seen technically at 6-7 weeks but because I had a UTI. Today's my first "official prenatal appointment" and I'm one day off of 11 weeks. :-)
  • My first appointment was when I was 8 weeks; 2nd when I'm 12 weeks

  • I had a nurse appt at 8 weeks post LMP with a dating ultrasound. That was a long appointment. The u/s was first, then they talked about the timing since I only measured at 7 weeks even though I was 8 weeks from LMP. However, I had been tracking my cycle and was expecting them to say I was 7 weeks, so no concerns there. We had a long talk with the OB nurse. She explained to my husband that it is possible to have morning sickness without vomiting. Silly men - my husband seemed to think that I must feel fine as long as I'm not puking. We went over the dos and don'ts of pregnancy, she give me a list of approved medications and another list of low Mercury fish and a few other resources. Then she drew a lot of blood for the 2011 tests they needed to do.

My first appointment with the doctor was at 12 weeks. That was as short and boring as most of the prenatal appointments.

  • Thanks girls!  I just called and was able to make an appointment for November 3rd.  I'll be almost 8 weeks at the appointment.  Such an exciting time.  I think I have googled "can you do/have/etc. this while pregnant 38329 times since Saturday.  ;)
  • 8-10 weeks is pretty much average for first appointment if you are low risk and seeing a doctor who you already have an existing relationship with. Though if they see no need for a dating ultrasound they may put you off until 12 weeks.

The time between appointments is always tough until you feel regular daily movement in third tri. At least it was for me.

I went in for my first appointment/sonogram thinking I was 7 or 8 weeks at best. Sonographer said "you're 12 weeks"....my jaw dropped.  I guess being a month further along than you thought can make you panic!

  • They wanted to see me at 9 weeks, but since they went by LMP and I have a long cycle, I was a little over 7 weeks.

  • 10 weeks. We don't even schedule new ob visits before 8
  • With my first, my first OB appt was not until 8 weeks.  This time around I am going in at 7 weeks.
  • Last time 7weeks. This time 5weeks since we miscarried last time. If you're low risk, it's a good thing to not have to go in early :)
  • I will be going in at 10 weeks. It is a long wait.....

  • My first appt is next week. I will be 5 weeks, 5 days. They said it was for bloodwork and paperwork.
  • First appointment for dating ultrasound/confirmation between 6 and 10 weeks (aiming for 8), first meeting with the OB at 12 weeks.
  • 6w2d my OB was able to squeeze me in short-notice, so I jumped at the chance to go that early. I wasn't expecting to see much of anything, mainly just hoping to get the confirmation from a doctor that there's actually something in there ;)

Ended up being positively surprised when there was actually a flutter visible on the internal ultrasound and my OB was able to pick up a "satisfying" heart rate. Seeing so much more of our cookie than I was expecting really drove the whole having-a-baby point home for me. It was amazing to see, so I'm really glad I was able to go then already.

Now at 7w1d and already anxious for my next appointment in my 10th week!

  • I don't know how I've managed this but I'm 8 weeks along and I have 4 ultrasounds now. The first was around 3.5-4 weeks and we did that b/c I ovulated so late we thought I was further along. Then 2 weeks later b/c we thought I would be 6 weeks and could see the heartbeat but I was only 5 then one week after that at 6 weeks where we heard/saw the heartbeat. This was all with my regular gyno then I had my first appt with my OBGYN yesterday at 8 weeks and they did their own ultrasound there where we saw the heart pumping even more clear. I feel very lucky I've been seen so much but I don't think it's very common. A lot of people don't seem to get appointments till way later. Mine have now slowed down though and the next one isn't until I'm 12 weeks.
  • Just had my first one today at 7w4d. Every doctor is different.

Lucky lady!!! I went in for my first appt. thinking I was 7-8 weeks only to find out I was 5! Not a huge deal but I was hoping I was farther along (closer to the highly anticipated 2nd trimester!)
  • My appointment is Friday, I will be 7 weeks along. They plan on confirming the pregnancy, doing an US, paper work, and family history.
    This is my second pregnancy.
My first they didn't want to see me til I was 8 weeks.

Definitely not a Dr here, but 4 ultrasounds and you're 8 weeks pregnant?  That doesn't sound right to me.  I'm 14 weeks and had my first appointment at 12 weeks (thought I was 7 or 8); nonetheless, I was told I wouldn't have another sonogram/ultrasound until 20 weeks.  At 16 weeks I have a general follow-up, but no sono/ultrasound will be administered (unless a reason to worry, of course).

I would question that, to be honest.  Seems like a lot of unnecessary testing, and I'm not sure your insurance/financial situation, but that seems like a lot of exorbitant Drs fees as well...

  • I was 5 weeks when I found out!
  • Mrstmoose, good evening, I hope you had a great day today. I would like to know where I can get that thing that is on your post?
  • Thank you for being specific with your first appointment. I have mine on Monday and I'll be 8 weeks 6 days from my LMP. I've been nervous just because I wasn't sure what to expect. Looking forward to good news on Monday.
  • With DD I think it was at 8 weeks. This time (and a different office), they scheduled me at 6 weeks.

I'd had several ultrasounds by 8 weeks with my first, and it sounds like my situation was similar to PP's -- I wasn't as far along at my first appointment as we'd thought I was, so I had at least one more (maybe two more? I don't remember) for dating and to ensure the fetus was developing. When they went in expecting to see six weeks of development but only saw three or four, they wanted to follow up to see that things were progressing appropriately. It was an extra appointment or two, but it was worth it to me to know everything was OK.

  • My first appointment will be on Wednesday, which will be officially my 6 week mark. I have heard that some doctors won't touch you til 8 weeks. So it really just depends on you and the doctor.
  • My first appointment was today (4 weeks 5 days) but that's because I have a history of miscarriages. I've heard most people are told to wait until 8 weeks but my OB/GYN thinks that's ridiculous and that women should be able to come in whenever they want to :) it just depends on the doctor from what I've heard. Congrats!!!
  • My first appointment is Nov 13th I'll be 7w 4d. My OB said they would see me as early as 6w but no later than 8w.
  • My office schedules between 8 and 10 weeks, got my first ultrasound and I was a week behind so I saw my lil one at 7 weeks 6 days, and heard a heart beat! They also took blood samples.

I had a similar experience as well (one at 5 weeks and change, one about a week later, I think a third at 8 weeks). Similarly, it was to check that things were progressing appropriately. I don't think this is out of the norm, especially if you had previous losses or have been diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage.
