  • My UO is that, although I don't like to bad mouth a woman who has overcome adversity and become a success in her field, I just can't get onboard with Hillary Clinton. I don't know why, but she just seems so slimy to me, and when I hear her talk she epitomizes everything I hate about politicians. Not to say that others are necessarily better, but there's just something about her that gives me the creeps. I'm bummed to admit it, because I tried really hard to be a fan even if I don't agree with all of her politics.

I don't believe in giving kids iPads or phones for entertainment. You're bored? Here's a coloring book. Need something to do? Go outside and play.
This world is too wrapped up in tech gadgets, it's actually frightening....
My kids are going to hate me, huh?

My DD is not allowed to play with electronics. But a lot of elementary schools are using iPads and I'm actually worried that she'll be behind in school because she can't operate one. Not worried enough to let her play with one though!

I agree with the sentiment for the most part, but they sure as hell come in handy on an airplane, or if you need to drag them with you to a dr appointment. Speaking from personal experience :)

This. I don't allow electronics on a regular basis but doc appts when she can't focus on books anymore, that day a 1 hr trip to Pep Boys turned into 6 hours, long car rides when she just can't function anymore and is bored with all her car toys/books, etc. I like to think of technology/electronics as a good tool to use in moderation. But yes, I know kids that are attached them all the time. That's crazy.

@JessicaB0627 - I give major props to anyone who has a kid and has stuck to this philosophy 100%. Kudos to you!
  • I don't really mind letting my son play with my phone here and there. He sees us using them all the time and is curious about what they are and how they work. However, he is 16 months and I more let him look and try to understand it then give it to him to actually play with, like a video game, as opposed to a more appropriate toy or playing outside.

  • My UO is that pregnant women should get a break. I'm not into being a martyr when I'm pregnant. I feel like crap, I'm exhausted and just not 100%. People around me are going to have to adjust their expectations accordingly.

This may be directed at my boss, who needs to calm the eff down.

  • I don't get the big deal over Adam Levine. He's not good looking, and his voice is weird.
Couldn't agree more. Ugly, and way too feminine to be attractive IMO...

  • I never said people can't post their Ramzi theory questions. It's just that 99% of us here aren't ultrasound techs and have no clue what we're looking at. It'll be just as much "fun" as when people post their further along U/S pictures and demand that we tell them if their baby is a boy or girl.

I love statements like these and the judgment by non-parents.  Just wait!  The sentiment is nice, though.

My UO is that I think it's ridiculous that people get mad when someone says they're looking forward to finding out the sex from the first trimester screening.   It doesn't matter WHY they are having the test.  Even if that's the only reason, at least they're doing the test and will find out about possible issues.  I much prefer that to the "I'm not doing the screening because it wouldn't change anything" head in the sand mentality.

I use to say the same thing about iPad/iPhone/TV for kids till I had my kid. They came in handy during the time you need it the most. (Cleaning the house or even if you just need to lay down for a bit) It's all about moderation. My daughter is pretty active for the most part but sometimes a little unwinding down on the iPad after a hectic day helps. ;)

Totally agree with you and No they will not hate you. They will love you for the discipline and opportunities you give them. They will love you for being the fun mom that lets them explore in the bushes and do paper mâché and science experiments and get messy.

(Already a parent and I do this. So don't need the "just wait". It can be done)

I was actually thinking about this the other day. All of our daily posts are about complaints- Bitchfest Monday, WTF Weds, UO Thursday. I was going to suggest a weekly POSITIVE thread. Maybe, Say Thanks Saturday. Anyone in?

@yogahh - so glad you suggested this. I was feeling this way, too, but I'm still learning my way around and didn't feel like messing with the system. I'm totally for a positive thread one day!

Do you have kids? My kid can watch all the tv or play on my iPad if it means I can get a break every once in a while. I have 22 month old and kids her age need constant supervision. If something quietly occupies her for a period of time I'm 100% for it!

  • I like Say Thanks Saturday. We should have a mid-week one too. Something to get us through the M - F blahs.

Ha.  I do all those things with my kids, too.  But it's hard to do paper mache and play in the bushes when you've been confined in a tiny doctor's office for 45 minutes.  Like someone else said, everything in moderation.

    -----qbf-----

I've worked extremely hard to teach my 2.5 yo that there are times in life where she doesn't need to be entertained. Like sitting in a doctor's office. I don't want her to ever think that she "needs" something in front of her, like an iPad, to be satisfied. She could sit and read books all day if I let her and she has an amazing imagination that she uses to entertain herself when I can't. I understand some people let their kids play with iPads and that's fine, that's your choice, but don't act like it's impossible not to and people can't do otherwise.

  • Great ideas guys! Def 2 a week at least.
  • @katykatykaty. So tru. You can never say never. One day you'll get a flat tire and be waiting on the side of the road for 3 hours for AAA with a screaming kid and anyone would say "here just play with my phone" for everyone's sanity. Although I guess you could always sing songs or play I spy. Just trying to think of things I did before game boys came out.

Yes, I think this relates to my UO today. The board facilitates complaints or being whipped into a frenzy. There aren't threads about daily successes. We need that, I think.
I would LOVE this. It would be refreshing and healthy for everyone to focus on the positives and the excitement. Great idea!!!!!!!!!

  • My UO is that I'm tired of the "oh you just wait" snarky attitude.  I get that it's not fair for someone who hasn't parented to think that they have all the answers, but similarly, I don't think it's fair for one parent to put down someone else's ideas just because it didn't pan out for them.  I also can't stand hearing things like, "you will have no life after you have a kid" and "you and your husband will hate each other for at least a year after the baby is born."  Those are serious things that people have told me.... :|
I hate those too. Frankly, having a kid didn't slow me down much. Life changed, yes, but didn't stop or slow down. I still go and do all the time. Sometimes with kid in tow (when appropriate), sometimes with kiddo at the grandparents'/babysitter's house. My marriage (and *cough cough* sex life) actually has been better since having a child. That may not be true for everyone but the mindset of "life stops when you have a kid" needs to change.

@JessicaB0627: iPads are practically designed for young kids to use. Your DD will probably get the hang of it quickly!  I've often suspected if they weren't a testing group...
