Number of ultrasounds

i was wondering how many ultrasounds you ladies have had with a normal pregnancy (not high risk) and not because of concerns. I've had 2 and I'm 31 weeks! My 7 week and then again at 19 weeks.

    I had one at
    5-confirm pregnancy, just saw sack
    7-see baby development
    12-see development, 1st told sex
    16-gender confirmation
    20-anatomy
    28-4D pics
and 30 weeks-Do 4D again since baby didn't allow us to see him well previous time, lol.

I feel I was so spoiled seeing my baby all the time and now my appointments are boring lol.

  • I have had 2, one at 10 weeks (dating) and another at 20 weeks (anatomy). People keep asking me when we will get to see the baby again, but I anticipate we won't see her again until she makes her way into this world, unless there is an issue. I am also under the care of a midwife and not an OB. I don't know if this makes a difference, but they seem less likely to want to poke around and more into just letting me be pregnant.

I honestly never thought I would be this person, but I secretly want to get a 3D ultrasound done just to see her little face! I am so curious what she looks like. But I am sure I won't do it. It won't even be that long now, I just need a little more patience.
  • I had one at 5, 8, 12, 16 &18 then will have another at 34. This is my 3rd lo and a new ob from my last 2. They have an ultrasound machine in the office and do 5 for each patient. With my first 2 kids our drs office usually only did the anatomy scan unless it was medically necessary to have more.
  • I'm thinking my hormones are turning me into a worry wort lol everyone I talk to says their baby moves 24/7 they can't sleep at night bc baby wakes them up and I'm over here like the only time I wake up is to pee. I've told my dr she's not that active and he assures me everything is fine but I would just like to see her to make me feel better!!

2-3 is pretty typical for a normal pregnancy.  A lot of doctors will not do them unless necessary.  I think I had 3 with my first.  This time around, I am high risk so I've had 6 so far with 2 more already scheduled coming up.  My last 3 have been 3D too...I feel spoiled also!

  • I had one at 8w and another at 19w. I asked at my last appointment and OB said I wouldn't have another unless there was cause for concern. I went to Labor & Delivery 2 weeks ago for signs of premature labor. They monitored baby's heart rate, contractions and checked my cervix but did not do an ultrasound.
  • 2, 1 for dating and 1 at 20 weeks. This is standard unless there is a concern. Some places don't even do a dating u/d but I guess machines are becoming more ubiquitous so practices are doing them more.
  • So far I've had one. Just for anatomy. I'm in Vancouver, though, and so the healthcare system is a bit different. I'm expecting to have one more.
  • I had one around 10 weeks to date the pregnancy (pregnancy test fail) and one at 20 weeks (anatomy scan). I have never had more than two with any of my pregnancies. I usually just have one at 18-20 weeks.
  • I had one at 20 weeks. Some OBs do less, some do more for normal pregnancies. It is my OBs policy to do only one if there aren't any complications.
  • For a normal pregnancy my insurance only covers 2- a dating u/s in the first trimester and anatomy scan around 20 weeks. I'm high risk so I've had more and will have a few more before baby is here- but standard care according to my insurance is 2 during pregnancy.
  • I had 1 at 9 weeks to confirm pregnancy and due date. And another at 17 weeks for anatomy scan. My OB won't do another unless it is medically necessary. However, I did just have a 3D/4D ultrasound at another office this week. But that was something I set up in my own not through my OB Doctor or insurance.

  • 2 here. One dating scan and one anomaly scan. X
  • 1. 13 weeks (threatened miscarriage)
    2. 17 weeks (elective gender scan at clinic)
    3. 20 weeks (anatomy scan at dr. office)
    4. 28 weeks (dr. concern about baby)
    5. 30 weeks (3D/4D elective at clinic)
    6. I forgot 10 weeks (to confirm pregnancy at clinic)

Typically with MY doctor you only have ONE. I had three there, one anatomy scan and two because there were concerns. I had three elective scans at a clinic for fun!
  • I have 2.. One at about 10-12 weeks and one at 20 for the anatomy scan. All other doctor visits consisted of the Doppler to hear heart beat
  • I've had 4 so far ..

    1. 8 weeks - dating US
    2. 12 weeks -NT scan
    3. 20 weeks - Anatomy Scan
    4. 27 weeks - to check to see if Placenta previa corrected it self which it did.

  • I have had 3 one at 10 weeks to confirm pregnancy, one at 20 weeks for anatomy scan and one at 28 weeks to make sure my low lying placenta had corrected itself. Normally my OB only does 2 unless they want to recheck something after the anatomy scan.
  • I've had 4 - 6wk, 10w, 12w NT, and 20w anatomy.
I'm dying to get another one! Going to talk to my OB about it on Friday. Pretty concerned that they don't check on anything again after 20w, what's up with that? Just to know baby is ok and developing properly?
  • I've had 3 ultrasounds throughout this pregnancy. 1• Dating US at 7+2. 2• Anatomy Scan at 19+2. And 3• To remeasure baby and recheck my cervical length at 23+3. No more ultrasound for me. Next time I will see my baby will be in the delivery room. Eek!!
  • I've had two. The first one was at 19 weeks for the anatomy scan. They weren't able to see his brain and spine well due to how he was laying, so I had a second ultrasound at 23 weeks. I am low risk.
  • I had one at 8 wks for confirming, a two part anatomy scan (one at 17 and one at 21), and then a quick 3 minute cervical check ultrasound every 2-3 weeks after the anatomy scan to check for cervical length. I had my last ultrasound this week at 32 weeks which was also a growth scan. So I guess 6 total?

Unless you have an issue most women get 2-3.

I've had one at 9 weeks, one for an elective NT scan, and one at 20 weeks.
My doctor said that's it for ultrasounds as long as my pregnancy continues going smoothly.
I really was hoping for one more!

I know you were asking for those who have normal pregnancies but, I feel like it's a blessing and a curse. On one hand, the pregnancy is high-risk, but on the other, I get to see the baby fairly often. I had scans at:

5 weeks 6 days - To confirm pregnancy (we had to see a fertility specialist due to three previous miscarriages)
7 weeks 5 days- To check growth and determine if we could move to a regular OB (we could, obviously)
9 weeks 4 days - First scan with the OB to assess pregnancy
10 weeks 4 days - I believe this was the NT Scan
11 weeks 5 days - Not sure why I had this one, but they've all been because of concerns on the doctors part
13 weeks 2 days - I had a bout of bleeding while on vacation
20 weeks 6 days - Anatomy scan, although we already knew the gender because we had genetic testing done
22 weeks 3 days - With a Maternal & Fetal Medicine Specialist because there were concerns about blood on the placenta (placental lakes)
26 weeks 6 days - Follow up anatomy scan with the OB to finish the anatomy because he was being stubborn and wouldn't show his face
26 weeks 3 days - A growth scan because placental lakes can cause growth restriction (he ended up only being in the 7th percentile for his gestational age)
30 weeks 2 days - I have a follow up scan on Monday with the M&F Medicine Specialist to see if he's grown in the last month, fingers crossed

(I know exact dates because I have every single picture on my fridge, it's amazing to see baby's progress)

So, lots of scans. This is my first pregnancy and it saddens me (slightly) that if I decide to have any more children, I may only get to see the baby twice. But it will be a good thing.

    Rainbow baby EDD 12/19/15
  • I feel more reassured now. I had one at 8 weeks for confirmation and one at 19 weeks for anatomy. There was aa third - i can't recall if it came just before or just after - and I had had an irrational amount of very wet discharge. She confirmed that i had not broken my water but took a peek at the ultrasound just in case. It was very unceremonious and done probably more to reassure me and shut me up than anything.
  • First at what was supposed to be 8 weeks. Measured 6. Saw two babies, one measured way behind the other.
Second at 10 weeks to check progress of small baby to find the larger had miscarried, baby B was doing well.
Third at 12 weeks to make sure baby A and the sack were absorbing properly and to settle on the due date.
Fourth and last at 21 weeks to check anatomy.

We also had one 3D/4D ultrasound one at a boutique at 17 weeks. We didn't want to wait any longer to see our baby after the initial scare in the beginning.

Had there been no complications, we would have had one ultrasound at the first appointment and one more at the anatomy appointment. Two is usually the normal.
  • I've only had one US at the 20w mark for anatomy scan. I declined the confirmation scan at first appointment as I had been charting and knew exactly when we conceived. OB mentioned @ last appointment that he may want to do another US at 34w to check size. I went on and made the appointment since I like the first of the day and needed early one so hubby could attend. Not sure why he is concerned with size...I was measuring within 1 day of due date at 20w US...and I passed my glucose screening with flying colors (so GD isn't a concern). I see him next week for 32w routine visit and if he mentions US again, I plan to ask him why he is concerned.

  • One at 12w, 20/24w (baby wasn't cooperating for a/s and had to go back again to finish) and a surprise one tomorrow at 33w. I thought we were done after the a/s, but my office does a position/ fluid level check as well around 32-33w. So normally it would be three total.

  • 1. 9+4 - dating scan
    2. 13+2 - NT scan (diagnosed with SUA)
    3. 15+2 - elective 3D/4D boutique US to determine sex (girl!)
    4. 18 weeks - bedside US by ER physician to check on LO prior to administering meds.
    5. 19 weeks - anatomy scan
    6. 21 weeks - fetal echo (protocol for SUA)
    7. 26 weeks - growth scan
    8. 28 weeks - growth scan and gallbladder US
    9. 29+5 - growth scan and transvag US to determine cervical length (PTL scare).
    10. 30 weeks - US in L&D for second PTL scare (real contractions timing like active labor).
    11. 30+5 - Abdominal US to rule out appendicitis, transvag to measure cervical length in L&D and quick bedside US to check on LO's movement and heart for third PTL scare after getting Terbutaline and having a bad reaction to the med (to stop real contractions timing like active labor...again).
    12. 30+6 - growth scan (already scheduled before having to go to L&D the night before unexpectedly).

Since I'm high risk with a cord abnormality and have been in L&D multiple times with actual contractions I'm sure I'll have a few more (now exactly 32 weeks).
  • I think I will end up having three scans.  I had one at 7 weeks because of a prior miscarriage and cramping.  I had the standard 20 week scan and was told I have a low lying placenta.  I will have another at 32 weeks to see if the placenta has corrected itself.  I was so glad to see that the previous posters who had a low lying placenta are all good now!  Hoping the same for myself.

My office will only do ultrasounds if medically necessary.  In a typical pregnancy I'm pretty sure you get one scan at my office - the 20 week anatomy scan.  My office doesn't even offer NT scans anymore - they told me the verifi test is more accurate so they just stopped doing the NT scans.
  • Dating scan at 9 weeks
    NT scan at 13 (because I'm 35)
    Anatomy at 20
In BC they only offer two a pregnancy unless you are high risk.
  • 1. US at 9w due to bleeding scare (on my bday)
    2. US at 12w for NT since I'm AMA
    3. Anatomy scan at 20w
    4. Follow up to Anatomy Scan at 24w since LO wouldn't cooperate for the heart chamber pics.
Normally it's 2 US through my dr's practice unless there's a good reason for it.
  • Just one for the anatomy scan.
  • I'll have four:
One at 6 weeks for dating
One at 12 weeks for NT Screening
One at 20 for an anatomy scan
And I'll have one final one at 36 weeks
  • I knew my LMP and my cycle had been 28-30 days my hospital only does dating scans if menstural cycle is irregular or if you're unsure of the date of LMP.

I had my anatomy scan a week early at 19 weeks due to a move (my hospital does them at 20-22 weeks). My OB sent me a message that the radiologist read the US and the OB read the report and everything looked normal.

My new doctor/midwife ordered a repeat because my records were released prior to the ultrasound report being complete so I didn't have documentation beyond my last OB's secure email. I'm happy I got the second one because the tech was better and actually got a nice profile shot...the first tech didn't get any "pretty pictures."

So, I've had 2 but only because of the records issue with the move. I have no reason to believe I'll have another.

I'm in Australia and I've had 4 - I don't think that I'll be having anymore unless my midwife/obstetrician is concerned.
    1. 7 weeks: dating scan
    2. 12 weeks: trisomy screening
    3. 19 weeks: anatomy scan
    4. 23 weeks: scan in maternal& fetal assessment unit due to cramping

    Edited for spelling
  • I think it all depends on insurance and risk factor. We had three at our RE office. 7 weeks, 8 weeks and 9 weeks, then we had our NT scan at 12 weeks, anatomy scan at 20 growth scan at 28 and scheduled for another growth scan in 2 weeks and probably every 2-3 weeks to monitor growth.

  • Just one. We did an anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I use a midwife and do minimal testing.
  • I feel spoiled... I am high risk, but in the beginning I wasn't. One at 7w3d, next one at 10weeks (no heart beat on Doppler or seeing a sac from tummy ultrasound needed to do a more in depth trans to make sure she was still alive in there after a 9w3d previous miscarriage).atantomy scan at 13 weeks, boutique 3d ultrasound at 18 weeks because I wanted it for my birthday present. 20w anatomy scan, 28 week boutique freebie for training win, than 2 days later when they looked at my gallstones (supposedly it was not medically sound if she didn't check on the baby while finding I had gallstones, I think she just wanted a peak but I wasn't complaining) and than 2 days later at the MFM. I missed my last Drs appointment because of being in the hosptial or I would've received a short ultrasound, and I have another one coming up Monday at 33 weeks to check on her size, with GD, and hypertension where I'm on blood pressure medicine they want to make sure it not affecting her too badly. They will probably have me doing sonograms every 1-2 weeks from here on out. Plus I love my doctors office, I usually leave with 10-15 photos instead of just 1 or 2.
