I've been out since July and not due until November 5. My job is extremely demanding also working 70 hour weeks wad just too much ( So i opted for early leave and am not returning until Feb 16 all paid leave.
I am planning on working until one day before my scheduled c-section. With DS that was fine & coming to work was not a problem. This time around it has been hard for me. I think it's acceptable if you aren't feeling up to par to start your leave early.
I know every situation is different, but where I work, if I needed it, I could take a leave before the birth as one incident and then still get my 12 weeks after the birth as a separate incident. You may want to research that.
But that would only count as a first incident if I got my doctor to say it was necessary. At this point I plan on working up until my due date, unless something changes.
If all is still going well and no signs of early labor, I'll be working up to my due date. I'm only taking six weeks because I only get one week paid and we simply won't be able to afford any more. I want to be able to spend as much time as possible with my LO, so I may even end up working past my due date if nothing is happening yet.
I have a plan, not sure if it'll work that way, but it's a plan. With baby #1 I worked until the day I delivered. This time I plan to do the same. My job is phone calls, emails, drafting so although mentally challenging at times it's not physically strenuous. It'd be more strenuous to be home with a 21 month old. We are also moving in a couple of weeks so I hope to get that done over a weekend. I plan to help, just not move any furniture. After that I'll try to take it easy. For leave I have about 2 weeks full pay of PTO, after that my gap plan is paying me $2500 plus short term disability will be 6-8 weeks of 60% pay. It will help I'm getting a bonus in in October so all of that will hold me over with bills. Still, after the PTO, I plan to work part time via my lap top several hours a week dealing with some of the high level stuff. I'll probably just submit billable hours for that. I'm hoping I don't have to take leave early because I really want the full 12 weeks "off" at home with baby #2. It would help me breastfeed as much as possible.
I'm from Germany, here we get off work 6 weeks before the EDD and 8 weeks afterwards. Fully paid I have to add. So I'm at my second week at home now (EDD 11/2) and I'm enjoying the free time I have, especially as I could finish the preparations for our little one. After the 8 weeks after the birth, I will stay at home for a year until start working part time (50% office, 50% from home). For that year at home you get sixtysomething of your salary from the state. I think that's a nice opportunity to spend a year with a baby and at the moment I'm quite happy to be enjoying all these privileges in Germany. :-)
I left right before 32 weeks. I had two rather serious scares at work, a supervisor that didn't understand and thus did nothing to help make sure the scares didn't happen again, a SO that was worried about me going in labor almost an hour away from him, and didn't qualify for FMLA anyway. So here I am on week two of being a stay at home something. It's boring and I wasn't necessarily ordered to do what I did, but the peace of mind is 100% worth it.
Thanks to my build up of vacation time I am starting mine right at 38 weeks. I have to use my vacation time before the new year anyway otherwise I lose it, so might as well! I also have an hour commute from my office to my delivery hospital and it makes me way too anxious thinking about going into labor at work and then sitting in rush hour traffic [-X
I'm working until I'm 39 weeks. Guess you know what country I'm in =(. I have an office job though, and 99% of us are women- so they've been very flexible and empathetic as far as doctor's appointments, and my duties etc... but I'm still working 40 hour weeks and I'm exhausted when I get off of work so I have some unfinished things to prepare for before babygirl gets here. [Mostly I'm in nesting mode, but too dang tired after work to do it] so I'm hoping the last week will be enough time to prepare if she stays in that long.
If not, thank goodness I can literally see the hospital from my office window- so if my water breaks, I think I'll make it. Hubby unfortunately works on the other side of town so that's a small concern.
I will be working until November 6th and my due date is November 10th. I am leaving my job to stay home so I don't have to worry about leave time. In addition to being full term, I hope he stays in there until November 6th for pay & insurance reasons!
I have six more work days left and then I'm off, Couldn't be more excited. I'll be 35+4 and although it's early we are moving the day after I finish work so that's why I'm going off so early. If I wasn't going off I would probably work all the way up to my due date. We are moving to a city that is 10 hours away and we have lots to get done before LO shows up
My due date is Nov 24th (2 days before turkey day) and originally I intended to work up until the week of due date. I provide in home services so I drive around seeing 2-3 clients a day which is starting to be a bit of a hassle for me. Originally I had heard that my compay would allow me to stay in office for the last week or so wrapping up paperwork but today I got told that I would be required to produce hours to the very last day. That combined with the baby measuring big is making me rethink the leave date but bc i have been at the job a year on Nov 10th, I know I can't take off before that. I hate it being in the air like that but these things aren't predictable so...sigh
I'm due nov 24 and am thinking my last day will be the 14th. I work 40 hours a week in retail as the asm. I am on my feet running around 8 hours a day moving fixtures and running shipment and it is just becoming too much. I am thinking of asking to work less hours maybe around 35.. If they allow me to do that I'll stick around until my due date.
Can I just take a moment to vent about the criminally brief amount of time most of us get for maternity leave in this country? I'm a teacher, and I get 6 weeks of, not maternity leave, but short term disability. America seriously needs to get it together and give moms and dads time with their children!
I'm due 12/2 but had DD a little early so my midwife is guessing thanksgiving due date. I'm working up until 37/38 weeks. I'm taking 16 weeks off for leave. It'll be unpaid but luckily my job has been supportive.
I'm an intensive care nurse & I will be working up until three days before my due date! Luckily it's no big deal if I go into labor at work, since I'll be delivering there! Using all of my sick/vacation time for 12 weeks of maternity leave.
NJ here. If we don't use our 4 weeks before, we lose it. I'm working until 36 weeks
I'm in NJ and so confused to the point it's stressing me out!!!! I want to go out at 36 weeks... If not sooner
What are you confused about?? I get 4 weeks prior to birth (fmla), 6 or 8 weeks after the birth (also fmla- for 12 weeks grand total). Once that is up, I get an additional 12 weeks FLA. (only 6 of those weeks are covered under disability). Hope that helps!!
I'm due Nov 8. I have a scheduled c-section on monday, Nov 2 (39w1d). So my last day....should be friday, Oct 30(38w5d). Unless Dr orders different...but everything fine so far.

is the 4 weeks before different than maternity leave? My company says they expect me to work til the day I deliver, but I want 4 weeks if that's what I'm entitled to. How is FLA different than fmla?
If you work in NJ, you get 4 weeks before your due date and 6 weeks after you give birth for an uncomplicated delivery. This is offered as STD through the state at 2/3 of your pay (up to a limit) or your work, if they provide for a more generous benefit. After this time expires, you are also entitled to an additional 6 weeks of bonding time through the state, again at 2/3 of your pay. That's a very brief overview and there are some exceptions (like the size of your employer or how long you have been working).
I am due November 2nd and have a scheduled c-section on October 26th (yes, that's only 3 weeks from today!!!!) so my last day will be Thursday October 22nd, only because I already had Friday the 23rd off to go do something fun with my older two kiddos before baby's arrival!!

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain
November 5th is my last day. I'm due the 6th. So basically I'll be working until I go into labor or punch someone who says something stupid and then get fired. Lol.
I'm a nurse in a really fast paced, demanding environment and plan to work up to my due date. We only get short term disability if we have been there a full year, which I haven't. I have to take all of my PTO, which is about 2 weeks, and then I get cut down to prn and lose all benefits until I come back to work. Thank god I'm on my parents insurance until I'm 26 and the LO will be on DHs.
I start this Friday at 36 weeks. I commute an hour and a half- two hours to and from work and spend a lot of time on my feet so I'm barely hanging in there this time. With my first I worked almost until I went into labor

I'm not sure, exactly. I know my company offers more generous benefits, so I am covered if I go late.

Oh I wish!! My 6 weeks after birth is at 60% pay through short term disability. I do have almost 2 weeks PTO I can use but 1 week has to be used before my disability kicks in. So the max I can take off is 7 weeks. Haven't been there for 1 full year yet so I don't even qualify for fmla which I planned on taking. I don't care if it's paid I just want to be home with my baby a little longer.
Im starting 10/18 at my 36 weeks.I really dont want to but my Doctor recommend it. I work in retail so standing for 8hr shifts is not helping my back aches.
I'm 33 weeks, a union carpenter, and Friday was my was my last day. I get paid disability for up to 6 months but the money is way less so I'll only take about 3 months off. Your body will tell you when to stop everyone is different.
I still haven't decided when to take mine! I'm a therapist on a neuro unit- on my feet all day with lots of hands on patient care. I think I'll try to work as long as I can but it's already becoming a challenge at 33 weeks! Good luck mamas!
I went into the Hospital with a severe gallbladder attack. I was in there for a dang week!! My OB took me out of work because I kept getting sick. My job is very strenuous, fast paced, and usually pretty hot. I was 32wks 3days. I'm going to end up using all my FMLA and Maternity Leave. Right after baby is born, they are taking out the gallbladder. I'm getting induced a week early unless baby decides to come earlier, which is a big possibility. I PLANNED on going on leave at about 38wks. I didn't quite make it.
I plan on October 30 being my last day at work which would put me at 38 weeks. I'm due on Friday, November 13, 2015. I tried filling out my 2501 claim for DI Benefits A paperwork online for EDD, but it says I can't fill it out until I am on disability. It's making me anxious :-S

Exactly. The law actually protects your job for an additional 12 weeks for bonding, you just won't get any pay for the full 12 weeks. I pay into family leave insurance which covers 6 weeks of bonding.

FMLA-- is for YOUR medical condition. In this case, your pregnancy and recovery. (it can also be another family members medical condition).

FLA- bonding time for you and the baby.
