LMP vs actual due date?

Hey ladies, I know a lot of you have had your 1st appointments already and have your more accurate DD from doctor. Just wondering if they varied a lot from the date based on LMP or not, and if so, by how much? Based on LMP I would be at 8 weeks 5 days, so looking forward to my 1st appointment in a week from today (!) to get a more actualized DD. Just curious to hear how accurate LMP was for everyone else? Also, if you measured less than what your LMP stated, did the doctor have any concerns?

Re: LMP vs actual due date?

  • I measured about 4 days later than my LMP, but I told my doctor that was accurate according to my late ovulation, so he wasn't concerned. Were you charting/temping?

I had my appointment this morning, and was told I was "spot on" using my LMP. I am 8 weeks 1 day today.

ETA: I have a 27-ish day cycle and did not chart/temp. No clue as to when I ovulated.

    Baby #2: BFP 9/2/15: EDD 5/15/16
  • If you ovulate any time after CD 14, or have more than a 28 day cycle, using LMP is inaccurate. I'm guessing I'll measure about 3-4 earlier than based on my LMP but I plan to explain that to my doctor and I don't foresee an issue.
  • Nothing yet - I'm very early still - but this is something I'm concerned about personally.  I know when I ovulated based on temping, so I have a good idea where I should be.  Last time, I was measuring significantly behind throughout the pregnancy and resulted in a MMC.  The blood tests I'm having can give me some assurance but nothing for sure until my scan, which isn't for three more weeks!  Good luck!

  • No wasn't charting. It was our 1st month kinda trying (we were going to really rev it up/start charting this month so getting KU our 1st cycle was a surprise). I am not that concerned...yet... just more curious to see where everyone fell. Guess doing some pre-research incase my dates are off!

I landed spot on this time; with DS, I measured 3 days ahead of where the lmp estimate put me. I usually have 28 or 29 day cycles.
Eta, I used 12-36hr opks the cycle we conceived this time which estimated my ovulation at day 14 or early morning 15.
  • benicode, I totally get the waiting part. My appointment has been scheduled since the day after Labor Day- so a 5 week wait. This is worse than waiting for Christmas to come when I was a kid!

  • With my other 3 kids my lmp and due date were the same. But since my mirena fell out I didn't have the chance to get back on my normal period so I was off by being 2 weeks behind.

  • With my first kid, I ovulated on CD17, so LMP was 3 days off. Thankfully, my doc knew I was tracking ovulation religiously (and had confidence in my ability to do so), so the due date I declared base off ovulation was never questioned.

With this one, LMP is wholly irrelevant thanks to IVF and an FET, so I've made one up that fits with my 5dt. :P For entertainment, my LMP actually started 1st Aug, which'd put me over 9wks along (instead of being 5w6d, which I actually am).

  • I was really off on my dating because my LMP would have put me 4 week farther along than I was. Three ultrasounds later and I was dated correctly and it was determined that I had just ovulated much, much later.
  • @yogahh  Same!  I found out before 4 weeks and mine isn't until 9 weeks (it's been scheduled for two already).  The only thing that's making my wait less stressful is that last time, I had a bunch of appointments/ultrasounds starting early and it just made me worry more when things weren't quite on track.  I think I'm happier living in blissful ignorance....

  • LMP was definitely not correct for me, but I was aware that I have long cycles so I suspected it would be that way.  I never temped/charted, but always kept track of how long my cycles were.  My average cycle was 36 days, so I estimated I o'd on day 22 and I was right on the money.  My Dr. does dating ultrasounds to confirm, which is nice.

  • I had my appointment last week. Based on my LMP, my due date should be 5/5. But I knew when I ovulated (based on temping) and that would put my due date at 5/9. Not a huge difference in the long run, but I did point it out to my doctor. Before the ultrasound, she said that based on my LMP, I should be 8w5d, but I was only measuring 7w6d. So again, I reminded her about my ovulation date vs my LMP. She said that even though she can see that I was right about my ovulation date, that they were still going to keep my official due date as 5/5, and she didn't seem concerned or anything. Not sure how keeping the wrong date makes sense, so I'm still telling people 5/9 because that also happens to be our 10 year anniversary so I like it better!
  • Mine was 100% accurate since I have been charting.

You might push for the correct due date now to give you more time to start labor naturally instead of being pushed to be induced. It'll be harder to change it later.

Just as a warning for the future... Be careful with this -- if you go past 40wks (and MANY first time moms do!), they may start trying to pressure you into an induction based solely on the inaccurate due date. When my OB was out of town, one of the other OBs in her practice tried to strong-arm me into one because my LMP date was 3 days off (which would've put me at 41+2 instead of 40+6); my regular OB wasn't going to have me do it until I was actually 41+4, though! (Not that we got there; labour started on its own at 41+1.)

Inductions are fine if you actually need them, obviously, but why put yourself through a probably-harder labour for no reason, y'know?

  • I was a day behind based on LMP. We also got KU the first cycle we tried and I hadn't started charting or temping because I wanted to ease into trying to take some of the pressure off. Sometimes I still can't believe it.

  • According to my LMP (7/31), my NP gave me a due date of 5/7. My cycles are 35 days long and I have been keeping track with OPK strips because I got a + on the OPK on 8/21 (CD 22). I was pretty positive that I got pregnant around that time thinking my EDD was 5/13 but she said we still have to go by my LMP. When we did the ultrasound, she said I was measuring 6 days behind but it wasn't enough to change my due date.

  • Based on my LMP my due date would be May 1, however because I ovulated late (we weren't necessarily trying, but I do know the date we had unprotected sex because I've been keeping track of this since getting off of BC in January), my new due date is May 10. Doctor wasn't concerned (even though I thought my ovulation was normal before this month), but they had me come in twice (one week apart) to make sure I was progressing as I should be. And I was so they said they'll officially change my EDD at the 20 week appointment when they compile all of my appointment data/measurements together. I still say May 10 :)
  • I ovulated on cd18 so that will make me 3-4 days ahead of LMP. I really want to use that date because I'm trying for a VBAC and want to go past 40 weeks if necessary. Dating us in two days!

I also find out I was pregnant 3 1/2 weeks and my appointment is in until 10 1/2 weeks. Longest wait ever

  • @katykatykaty @soralette I had this exact thought!!! I'll definitely be keeping that in mind. My OB did say something about seeing where I'm at during my next ultrasound to see if we might need to adjust the date, so I'll definitely push for it then!
  • they will only change your DD if it is 7 days different from your LMP date. for DD we changed it because I didnt ovulate for 4 weeks after my MC, this one Ill just go by LMP because I ovulated 2 days difference from "normal"

  • Weirdly, I was spot on based on LMP. But I would have sworn up and down that I ovulated Six days late... So I was shocked!

  • 8 days off going by LMP. I knew I ovulated late and expected it.
  • I should be 10 weeks based on my LMP, but I'm measuring a healthy 8 weeks.
  • So from what I am hearing here... Even if your actual dd is later than the lmp due date, it seems to be ok? I really need to not speculate and just wait for my appointment. Hoping I'm less neurotic 2nd tri ;)

  • I am measuring spot on my due date based on lmp. I was really surprised since it seems like this doesn't happen much. I wouldn't worry too much yet.
  • It could honestly go either way.  Your LMP, without knowing when you ovulated, could provide a different EDD than what is accurate.  If the doctor has concerns, they will schedule you for a follow-up to see how your are progressing.  But measuring later it does not automatically mean that it is bad.

  • According to my LMP my due date is May 8th. I had a sonogram at about 6 weeks and the sonogram tech said the measurements showed the same date of May 8th. Just went for my 8 week visit and the tech said that the baby measured to be due about May 12th but she (or my Dr.) was not concerned about the few day difference. She said its difficult to pinpoint an exact date so a reasonable range is fine. They are keeping my due date for May 8th unless future appointments show otherwise.
  • I went last week for my first appointment and being a FTM was a nervous wreck this past week. I thought I was 6 weeks 6 days, but when I went for the ultrasound (dr did dating scan) I was only measuring 6 weeks. The tech only saw the gestational sac and yolk- no fetal pole. I have another ultrasound appointment tomorrow afternoon, so DH and I are praying that the fetal pole is visible and we can hear a heartbeat. Based on last weeks numbers, I should be 7 weeks tomorrow. My LMP had me at May 18 due date, and the dr doesn't want to change it... But I feel like 6 days is a BIG difference in what is going on with my LO!!! Please say a prayer for us for tomorrow!!

The whole basing your due date on your lmp is based on if you ovulated on cd14.  Since not everyone ovulates on that date then your due date will be later.   I know based on my lmp I would be coming up on 8 weeks on Wednesday, but since I have a general idea of when I ovulated I know I will be more like 7 weeks on this coming Wednesday.  While I was not tracking ovulation, I was tracking the days we did the deed so I know I had to have ovulated in that general time frame. Therefore, my due date will be later than my lmp

Unfortunately though, until a doctor's office can do a dating scan, etc, they assume it based on your lmp

I charted so I'm pretty sure I ovulated 4-5 days late. Hopefully I will get a dating ultrasound after my first appointment to confirm it. Until then, I'm going by my lmp due date of May 19. I doubt they will change the date since there's less than a weeks difference.
  • Based on O date (I charted my cycles) I'm 8w0d. Based on LMP I'd be 9w0d. But based on today's ultrasound I'm 8w3d.

Personally, I'd never go by LMP. I don't have normal length cycles.

My nugget measured a tiny bit smaller, so my doc changed my DD one day past the original projected DD based on my LMP .Doc told me its completly normal to not measure up with your LMP DD.
  • I wound up measuring exactly in line with my LMP.
