Baby's Sleep at 4 Months

edited October 2015 in June 2015 Moms
Now that our babies are 4 months or close to it, I was wondering how your sleep and nap routines are going!

1. What's your nap schedule looking like?
2. Have you thought about/are you starting sleep training at night?
3. If you've started, what method are you using?

Re: Baby's Sleep at 4 Months

    1. I'm moving LO to 3 longer naps a day. I had been making her nap every 2 hours. They only lasted 30 minutes or so. I've been reading that she shouldn't really be doing that, and should sleep for longer stretches.
    2. I think we'll start real sleep training in the next 3-4 weeks. Right now she's transitioning to the crib (first full night in there last night) and we are planning a trip at the end of the month. After we get back, we're planning to use the Ferber method, aka CIO. But we'll do it correctly and gradually. She desperately needs to learn to put herself to sleep. The constant bouncing for 3 hours a night is killing my back, especially as she gets bigger.
We're also pushing her bed time back later, because I read that she is in bed too long and that's why her naps are sucky and she won't fall asleep.

ETA: Actually, I just read the Ferber method shouldn't be started until 5 months. Soo.... I'll be "preparing" for that if we can't figure out how to help her self soothe and put herself to sleep before then!

  • 1. My boy naps morning, midday and afternoon. He put himself on that "schedule" despite our lives having zero schedule. The specific time and length vary, but in general, it's three naps.
    2. We move on Wednesday and then we will be stationary for a few months. I plan to put LO in his own room and work on better sleep habits then. No "training" unless two weeks of concerted effort go by without sleep improvement.
    3. I just recently started having DH console him if LO wakes before 3 hours are up. And I now let LO fuss and make noise, and actually cry, before I pick him up at night. This created a slight improvement over the 2 hour intervals we were previously getting.

LO is 17 weeks / 4 months on Tuesday

Depending on the time she wakes up in the morning we get about 3/4 naps. They last pretty much always 42 minutes.. And I'm trying to figure out how to get them longer because I also saw that she should be napping longer. Sometimes if I go in and rock her/feed her she'll go back to sleep with me holding her. Maybe I should try to keep her up longer also? I've been really looking online and it says at 3 months they should be back down within 1.5-2 hours. She starts yawning around 2 hours but I'm already rocking her for a little before that.

Her nighttime is always different. She was sttn from 6-12 weeks and since then she's been getting up once during the night. Past week it's been about 4/5 am but last night was 1:30. I haven't really decided on sleep training yet. She was doing so good for a while so I'm hoping she'll just get back to it. She eats for about 50 mins before bed and is out before I put her down around 8.

ETA she's been sleeping in the crib for about a week. Before that pack n play
  • 1.)My son naps 3 times during the day for an hourish. Sometimes less sometimes more but never gets to be 2 hours, I think the most he's done is like an hour and a half.

2.) he's been sleeping in his crib in his own room since 2 months old. & he sleeps for 12 hours. 8pm-8am though lately I've been putting him to bed at 730 because he seems a bit more tired now, but he still wakes up at 8am

3.) I'm not really sure I've used any really special methods. In fact for a long time I was concerned with how much he slept at night so I ended up discussing it with my pediatrician who said don't be worried and to take it and run. He eats a lot through out the day 6-8oz every two hours... So the peditirician said that since he's eating that much it's okay for him to not be eating at night!

  • Lo has been sleeping in his crib for about 2 weeks now. He wakes around 630 eats and goes back to sleep til about 830, naps about 40 mins. He will then nap in the afternoon for an hr or 2 then an evening nap for an hour around 5. Bed time routine starts at 730 then in the crib in his sleep sack at 9! I rock and hum to him until his eyes start to get heavy bed lay him in his crib. He usually fusses a little but will fall asleep on his own with the white noise on and the projector on the ceiling. Sleeping has been much better since the sound machine/ projector has come into our lives!
  • My guy needs his three naps too, sometimes 4. He basically wants to sleep again right after his first feed of the morning no matter how much sleep he got and then he has to sleep around lunch or he ends up falling asleep at his next meal before we can finish. He takes a late afternoon/early evening one and sometimes a late morning one depending on how early we wake up.

No plans yet although his weight gain has slowed way down so have to keep an eye on it. We are down to six feeds a day by his choosing and he isn't eating enough every feed to really get as much as he should I think. We shall see. His naps range from 30 min to about 1 1/2 hours. Anyone else feel like there's not a lot of time with them now that they are sleeping better!?!
  • 1. ) lo sleeps around 2-4 naps a day 2-3 at daycare and they vary on the time she usually takes a little nap around 6:30 or so.

2.) I did baby wise early on lo sleeps from 8-9pm until 5-6am. And has been sleeping close to that since she was 10 weeks old. Ped doc wasn't concerned and said it was awesome for us. She has gone up 50% in weight since she was born and is a good eater.

3.) I'm not opposed to cio. Luckily I don't think we will have to suffer through it. Here is a breakdown of our nightly routine we have done this really since she came home from the hospital. Feeding, Chang diaper with a &d cream Jammies sleep sack arms out. Turn on sleep giraffe on sleep setting read one book than goodnight moon rock for 2-5 minutes down for evening. Lo is good at putting herself to sleep she has slept in her room in a crib since she was 8 weeks. Sometimes she falls asleep earlier and then we just put her in the sleep sack and put her down. Hoping that maybe the schedule we have can help you other ladies our lo really does well with it.
  • 1) My son takes about 3 naps. One around 9:00, then around 12, and again around 3. He sleeps for about an hour to 2 hours each time. The evenings are no fun.

    2) I'm just hoping I can get him out of our room and into his crib this week! We've been doing naps in the crib to transition. I am not sure about sleep training. I'm not sure I can do CIO. I guess we'll see how this transition goes.

    3) haven't started yet.
  • She takes 3-4 naps a day. Two are longer (60-120 min) and the others shorter (30-45 min). She has always napped unswaddled in her crib. I wait for her tired cues and then put her down awake.

She STTN in her crib, has since 10 weeks. If I'm not working she wakes between 430-6, eats, and then sleeps for another 3 hours. She eats around 7p and then goes in her crib awake. Currently one arm swaddled out.

This is all her doing, nothing I can take credit for and I consider myself lucky. She is a thumb sucker so that's helpful too. Always soothes herself asleep for naps with her thumb.

  • @janit368 our babies sound so identical. Tongue ties and all. Her weight gain has slowed and she's not emptying me but the IBCLC said not to worry because it's known that from 4 mo on breastfed babies gain slower and become lean. Not worrying unless she's losing. But her tongue tie reattached and is really making feeding tough lately. Almost worse than pre revision.

  • Any other tricks to get lo to fall asleep herself? I bounce/rock for 10-20 minutes to get her asleep before putting her in the crib. Sometimes she wakes up 1 or more times and needs to be rocked again for a min before being back asleep and then she goes in crib. Sometimes she's out. Idk how to get her to fall asleep without that. It's pretty dark and have white noise machine on, swaddled. It's getting tiring now at 15 weeks
  • Not 4 months yet, but question. So did one night your LOs just drop the middle of the night feed and kept at it? We currently just dropped 2x a night feed and now feed at 130-230am before 620am wake up. Just wondering so I can still pray for that one night!

This is what mine did. He dropped a feed one night and then later down the road dropped the other one. He gets up for the day around 7 (sometimes 6ish)

  • What's your nap schedule looking like?
DB doesn't take long naps anymore. Short nap between 8-10 for 20-45 minutes and an afternoon nap anywhere from 1-3 for the same length of time. Occasionally a third nap, and he's usually in bed between 6:30-8:00 pm.

    2. Have you thought about/are you starting sleep training at night?

We don't have a need for it currently.
  • @slr1229 We started putting DD in her crib a little before 13 weeks. She woke up the first two nights at 1:30, but the second night I just monitored her, and she fell back asleep without crying after a few minutes. After that, she has dropped the MOTN feeding. She now sleeps from 9-4 or 5, eats, and then sleeps again until 7:30ish.

@caitlincunn have you tried a pacifier, or arms out so she can find her hands? I don't give DD a pacifier at night, but do sometimes during naps, and it helps to soothe her to sleep. I take it away once she's out. We also weaned her off of rocking to sleep around 8 weeks. I slowly would put her into her crib more and more awake each time. At night we are able to put her down awake after her last feed and bedtime story, and she's out within 5 minutes. I hope this helps!

So jealous!!! How long did it take to get her to be able to fall asleep in her crib?
  • Sounds good. She's been sleeping in crib for 5 weeks (14 weeks now) and falls asleep easily at least! Just waiting on that middle feed to be gone!
  • LO (15 weeks) naps 3-4 times a day, depending on what time she wakes up in the morning.  When she STTN she wakes up around 6am and then will nap 4 times.  When she eats MOTN (usually sometime between 1 and 3), she sleeps until around 7-7:30 and then will nap only 3 times that day.  Naps tend to be 30-60 minutes (aside from occasional long weekend nap, because I will usually let her sleep on top of me for her midday nap, but I transfer her around the 90 minute mark otherwise she will stay there for 3 hours).

She kind of made her own schedule...most days she will nap around 8am (if she woke up at 6; if she woke up at 7:30 she skips this one), around 10-10:30am, around 1, and around 4.  Her bedtime depends on what time her last nap ended.  Some days she refuses to go down for her third nap at daycare, or she goes down early and is up by 3:30, so we do bedtime as soon as we get home (otherwise she falls asleep nursing and "naps" until so late that it destroys the bedtime routine).  On a normal night, when she takes her usual late afternoon nap that ends around 5, we start the bedtime routine around 6:30 with a bath and she's fully asleep between 7-7:30pm.  Though she has a cold right now, so the bedtime routine has been a bit rough (it's hard for her to eat when her nose is stuffy, so she's fussy and generally needs to be rocked upright after eating in order to fall asleep...which makes the subsequent crib transfer more difficult).

I credit daycare with making the transfer from bassinet to crib and her sleep activities so good and easy...ever since she went there, she has been sleeping in the crib no problem, and can easily put herself to sleep in non-ideal situations (in the car, just sitting on my lap, etc) when previously she HAD to be nursed and rocked in the glider in the darkened nursery to nap at all, and if I removed her from my lap she would wake up immediately.  She fell asleep last weekend just sitting on my lap at a football game.  She does wake during the night but puts herself back to sleep after thrashing around a bit and sticking her thumb in her mouth.  If she wants food, she starts with cooing and then gradually will escalate to crying if we don't hear her.  If she's not hungry she just goes back to sleep on her own.

I fear the sleep regression, because we have it so good right now.  I know it's coming and I'm scared.

  • @cait7425 she won't take a pacifier or bottle!! And we just started to swaddle again a few weeks ago in hopes that it would help with naps but it hasn't. Maybe I should try the regular sleep sacks again.
  • My baby is 16 weeks and is a pretty good night sleeper. She is asleep by 7.30pm and sleeps until about 5am has a quick feed then sleeps until about 8am. However, I have to feed her to sleep. During the day I'm lucky if she has 2 or 3 ten minute naps and they are generally on me and she falls asleep while feeding. Every afternoon i try and notice tired signs and put her down somewhat sleepy and she cries/screams/thrashes about in her cot and after about 2 hours of trying to calm her and shush her to sleep I give up. She's worked up, I'm upset and feel like I'm not getting anywhere. Anyone else? I think I just have a social baby who wants to be up all day. Anyone aware of any side effects of babies not getting enough sleep? I'm going to talk to the Dr next week about it as I worry about her development.
  • @Sjeff0816 well, ever since she started with naps in the crib she has become comfortable with that environment and goes down pretty easy. When we started having her sleep in the crib at night it took 2-3 days for her to knock out in a couple minutes. She fusses a little before falling asleep, but not full blown crying. It takes a little patience on my part to let her scutch and whine for a little. I was determined not to have to rock her to sleep every time.

My LO was STTN up until last week! :(( We would start bedtime routine at 8pm and he'd be in bed by 8:45-9pm and would sleep until 5:30-6am, then feed and back to sleep until 8am. Then last week it all went to crap! He's now waking up every 2-2.5 hours and sometimes less. He screams his head off! And won't settle until I feed him. He used to be able to just put himself to sleep on his own and would happily settle in for the night.

It's either the 4 month sleep regression or he's just not full enough anymore! I feel like I'm back to the newborn stage again 8-} I'm so confused and want to cry! All your babies sound like they're sleeping so well!

  • My girls nap all day long it seems like but they are short little cat naps. It's like they play too hard them pass out! I'm not really a stickler right now on scheduled naps and do not feel like stressing about it.

The twins have been sleeping in their cribs since day 2 of coming home. We have had the same routine since then also. We do a bath and bottle then we sleep sack them with arms out. Sometimes they fuss a bit and I have a 15 minute fussing limit until i go back into their room. They will be five months in 2 weeks but since about 3 months they have been sleeping anywhere from 9-12 hours a night. I feel so lucky and pray that you mommas out there get some sleep soon!

DH and I are really laid back and probably won't use any methods. We're more of the "just wing it" type. Like our entire approach for parenting!

  • I chose tonight as the first totally unswaddled night. Put her down at 730 and the monitor just went off and she's thrashing about. Ugh. I'm off for the next 2 nights so I figure it's as good a time as any...

  • I had lo in the regular sleep sack today for nap and she slept almost 3 hours. I didn't know what to do with myself. I kept staring at the monitor like I know your going to wake up now.. Ha. She was sleeping in them up until maybe 2 weeks ago when I resorted to swaddle sleep sack to try to get her naps longer. Took a nap for about 40 mins after that so no expecting it to happen again tomorrow.
  • Aaaaand we are now on 1.5 hour intervals of waking up unswaddled. I know that's a normal sleep cycle. I hope she can learn how to sleep through them.

  • LO is only 14 weeks, and like I mentioned, we dont really have a problem getting her to go to sleep. Staying asleep during naps is the problem. DD will wake up after 45 minutes most times. Sometimes after 30 minutes. She is clearly still tired. Every once in a while I can pop the pacifier back in and she will maybe sleep for another 15 minutes. Maybe. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is the case whether she is swaddled or not. Pacifier or not. In the crib or in the swing. She's great at night, but the naps are the problem. Is belly sleeping the only answer?

@cait7425 I've had the same thing going on. According to Google- they wake up after their first sleep cycle transition which happens 35-50 mins into the nap. That's happening if she's waking up always after the same time.
My lo is doing 42'minutes! Some things says to wake them up slightly 5-10 mins before they usually wake to try to start a new cycle, also say go in and place hand on their chest in hopes you will prevent the transition from waking them up. Or pick them up and start your soothing routine again. I haven't really tried anything for a few days at a time but sometimes I can rock her back to sleep/nurse her back to sleep. I'll usually watch the monitor and if she wakes up I'll give her a few to see what she is doing and then go in, pick her up and rock her and you'll know in a few minutes if she's going back to sleep or not. We're 16 weeks tomorrow and yesterday she took a almost 3 hr nap and today one nap was an hour. So maybe it gets better? I don't know! I would love 3 separate hour naps or one long nap and a few other short ones but who knows.. It keeps changing!

LO typically takes 3-4 naps a day...if they're all in the 30-45 minute range she takes 4, if there's a longer one or two in there she takes 3. Doesn't affect her nighttime sleep so I'm cool with it. They're supposed to accumulate around 3 hours a day in naps from 4-6 months and we usually get close to that. She's 50/50 on STTN and having one MOTN feed, so if her naps are short so be it...I'd rather sleep at night anyway! At night she goes down between 7 and 8 and gets up for the day between 6 (STTN) and 7:30 (MOTN feed).
  • We are not 4m yet, not until the 24th. But LO is good at STTN, depending on when his last feed is. He has started to fall asleep downstairs with me around 7pm, and I just let him until I am ready to go to bed around 830-9 (sometimes earlier, very rarely later). If he remains asleep when I bring him upstairs, he will usually wake once overnight. But, almost always he wakes up (which he will probably for sure be doing once I start to use the merlin sleep suit, I don't see how I can get him into that without waking him), so when he wakes I go ahead and feed him. I'm leaning towards waking him no matter what, otherwise he only eats 3 times a day, and we struggled so hard to get his weight going I don't want to lose ground there. And remember it takes an hour to feed him, so we both are going to sleep for good around 930-10. Then he will sleep until about 7am, give or a take an hour. But almost always 7am ish. So he basically sleeps from 7pm ish to 7am ish, with one 1 to 1 1/2 hour wake session before I go to bed myself.
Naps during the day are totally effed up right now. He went from napping an hour or more after each feeding to barely napping at all (like 20 min) during a feeding 'cycle', to now the past 3 days taking a fairly long nap (an hour or two) mid morning and either catnapping again the rest of the day, or taking another randomly longish nap in the afternoon. I've only barely begun to count on the mid morning nap to be able to nap myself or do some stuff.

  • My kid sucks at sleeping. At home I let her nap in the swing where she will take 2-3 naps for 1-2 hours. At day care or in her crib, she sleeps for 20-30 min at best but will fight a nap for 2 hours.

She's in her crib at night but still only sleeps 4-6 hours and is up 2 or 3 times at least. We're not to 4 months yet but I'm counting down the days until we can sleep train. We did CIO with DS but he was STTN by now. We might have to try something else with this one.

When do you plan to sleep train?
  • LO will be 4 months on the 21st. His regular routine is to fall asleep breastfeeding in our bed, get transferred to the crib, and sleep soundly through the night only waking up once to eat, then going back to sleep quickly after eating. However, lately he's had a cold and whether because of that or because of the four month regression, he's been a little more clingy and waking up more often for the past few days. It's still only 2-3 wake ups a night though...nothing near like when he was a newborn and wanted to breastfeed all day and night. I think I'm pretty lucky he's a good sleeper.
  • @Sjeff0816 Sorry I didn't see this! We're starting tonight. Last night LO woke up and just wanted to be rocked back to sleep so I think she's ready. Last night I put her back down awake and she just fussed for 10 min and fell back asleep. She wants to eat at 2am, but not much. The other times she wakes up she doesn't even want to eat.

She's been going to sleep on her own for a while, it's the MOTN we need to work on. We've been able to read to her the last 3 nights without her screaming, too. Since she never escalated to actual crying last night, I'm hopeful...

Oy vey. DD is sleeping through the night (for the most part). Thank god. The day though. Good lord, the day. She wakes up screaming, calms down, is happy/playing/eating. Then wants to sleep again an hour-hour and a half later. She doesn't go down easy anymore. It's a fight. She never used to be this way. We were able to put her in her crib awake with a pacifier and she would be out in a couple minutes. To top it off, her naps have turned into 20-30 minutes. So she's napping 5-6 times a day, but waking up still tired. I am praying this is just a leap thing and not a new way of life. I was hoping we would be heading into the land of 3 longer naps a day. Please say it gets better. It so tiring trying to read her cries and moods now.

ETA she is almost 16 weeks.

How did it go?  LO fussed a little bit about an hour after she fell asleep, but I didn't have to go in.  She woke up at 1:30 and I fed her.  She fell asleep nursing, but I woke her up and put her in her crib.  She fell asleep again and didn't wake up until 7.  And she was happy to see me this morning!  I guess that was a good night 1.  Hope yours went well too!
  • @Sjeff0816 It went pretty well. She woke up 3 times before midnight and we were able to get her to settle down by patting her back and she put herself back to sleep. I fed her at 2:30 and she slept until 7. We're going to try 1 feeding a night for a week and then cut that one out as well. She's been eating 2-3 times, so we're going to wean her gradually.

The good thing is she doesn't really cry, so I'm not as worried about her waking DS. But it can take 45 min of fussing before she falls asleep and I can't fall asleep until she's quiet. But we're moving in the right direction.
  • @Sammy K how long are you aiming for lo to sleep? 12 hours? Just wondering because I'm Pretty sure ours were both born the 17th? From 6-12 weeks old she was sleeping 8/8:30-7/7:30. Then went back to waking up once which I don't mind because I didn't expect her to sleep 11 hours straight. But she wakes at all different times. Could be anytime between 2am and 5am. Then she will go back to sleep. Last weekend we had 3 nights of her sleeping 8-7 and then back to one wake up. It would be really nice to get her back to not waking although I know some babies need to eat during the night. I feel that since she slept without food for 6 weeks she can still do it. Sorry for the long post.. Ha
