Soda and Coffee

Hi all, any ladies gave up the goodness of coffee or soda completely during pregnancy? My doctor told me that it's not absolutely horrible as I was experiencing horrible headaches from withdrawal during my first trimester. So I've cut back but not cut out. Any one else like me?

Re: Soda and Coffee

  • I'm a sweet tea drinking fiend! I cut it out for 2 weeks first tri and had the WORST headaches. I drink it like I did before pregnant. It's my vice. I'm pretty good about other stuff so I don't really feel bad about this!

  • I tried to give it up and did really well with it for the first 6 weeks after our BFP. But then the first trimester exhaustion just wore me down enough that I caved. I have about one coffee or one soda a week now as opposed to 2 a day that I was at before.

  • I'm a big dr.pepper fan haha. But still one a day or every other day. I try to drink at least three glasses of water before I reach for one. I'm still walking/running almost everyday so I feel a smudge less guilty!

I skipped caffeine completely the first tri (my MW said this is the highest risk period for there to be any potential issues from caffeine). Now I drink a latte with one shot a few times a week and don't feel one bit guilty. I don't drink soda anyway. So much sugar to begin with, and really sweet stuff has been a big turn off lately.

I typically drink about 3-4 glasses before I reach for a soda unless it's one of those days and I make it to the soda first. I chug water for the rest of the day. With walking my dog around I feel better about life.

  • I went 2 years without caffeine and fell off the bandwagon for about a year. I quit drinking it again earlier this year and that had nothing to do with pregnancy (as it happened before).

Since I've been pregnant, I've had a few sodas but for the most part the taste is way off to me and has been an aversion. The only soda I can tolerate now is Pepsi which is weird because I rarely drank it before.
  • I have 2 and a half cups of coffee on my bad days and 1 to 2 on my good days. I was told by my doc that some studies showed that caffeine above 300mg a day, could be linked to an increase in miscarriage in the 1st tri. Now that I'm past that I really don't worry about it much.

  • I went cold turkey for DS and now this pregnancy but I never have coffee regardless so I just had to cut out the 1-2 sodas a day. There is a safe amount so I would trust your doctor that you're fine. Going from a lot of caffeine to none can definitely give you headaches so I don't think they recommend that. Also, it's recommended to keep your coffee intake low for the first 3 months if you are breastfeeding and avoid it before evening feeds.
  • I used to feel bad about having a small half caf a day. now I have a small reg coffee every morn-no regrets! Im also eating some chocolate as we speak. My doc would rather me avoid it completely but I just need/want my caffeine especially after giving everything else up.
  • I've cut down, but not out. I have a small latte or a cup of coffee/tea 1-2x/week. I only drink soda if I have a headache.

  • I believe if you stay under 200 mg/day it's fine. I did not cut out caffeine completely this time, like I did with my first born. I still have at least one cup of coffee or one soda/day. One can of soda I think is only like 39 mg of caffeine.

  • I cut out coffee completely (mostly because it was a good way to cut off my dunkin donuts iced coffee obsession which was not good for my body or my wallet) and I'll only have 1 caffeinated soda a day but only some days. Lately around this time it's been hard to not have one because I'm so exhausted at work

  • I have a cup of coffee most days. I didn't drink much in the first tri because it grossed me out. My doctor said under 200mg/day is completely fine.
  • I cut out caffeine completely during pregnancy. It sucks, but I'm a big worry wort and rather and it helps me feel at ease. I do miss my Dr. Peppers but it's inly a few months.

  • I cutnout caffine completely from June (when I found out I was pregnant) until August 31st when I started my first semester in college. I have 1 soda or coffee every weekday and then do not have it on the weekends.

I did the same originally for the same reason haha! But I got so tired in the middle of the day the last two weeks and with school amping up for tests I've given up.

I have a small cup of coffee in the morning then in the afternoon I usually will either do a refresher from Starbucks or a caffeinated tea or something. I don't really think twice about it now that I'm second tri

  • Before I got preg I was a HUGE coffee drinker, like multiple cups all throughout the day. During the first tri I felt so sick I couldn't drink it, but once I felt better I started drinking 1-2 cups of half caf a day. I also have a green superfood energy drink mix that has about 85mg in it on days when I really need it or before the gym in the afternoon.

  • I have a cup of coffee or tea to get me going in the mornings and sometimes I will have half a coke if can't kick a headache.
  • I used to love coffee and I had aversions to it in first tri! It still doesn't appeal to me. I wonder if I'll ever want it regularly again...I used to drink 3 cups a day!

I occasionally have a cup of caffeinated tea, and in the first tri I sometimes craved coke, so I had a few. Most days I go without, though.
  • I've always loved coke with crushed ice. I would have probably 2-3 a month. The first 18 weeks of this pregnancy the thought of coke made me gag. Now I'm back to liking it but have only had one in the last two weeks. I don't feel guilty about it, I just know there are better options

    Coke with crushed ice....YUM!
  • I loooooooooooove drinking hot tea. Fortunately, I had switched to decaf several months before getting pregnant, so I've been decaf all the way (or like 95% of the way) through my pregnancy. A few times I've gotten iced green tea while I'm out or had a few little cups of oolong at a Chinese restaurant, but that's pretty rare :)
  • I agree with PP that you are at the highest risk (and the risk isn't that high to begin with) for miscarriage in your first trimester.  Since we are all in the 2nd trimester, it's less of a concern.  I have 1-2 cups a day typically.

  • I've been having 1-2 cups of coffee daily for my entire pregnancy. Just over 20 weeks now and no issues, didn't have morning sickness either though.

I'm off the caffeine but will have a small cup of soda with tylenol if I get a bad headache.

  • I cut it out the first 6 weeks just because I was off for the summer and figured it would be easier since I wasn't going to work. I was getting terrible headaches and my midwife said to go back to having my coffee in the morning. It helped SOOO much! I've tried to lay off soda but every once in a blue moon I have one. I have tea sometimes too.

Right?! I fill a cup most of the way with pebble ice (do they call it that everywhere?) then put just enough coke in to cover it so as I drink I also chomp ice. Yum yum.
  • I haven't had caffeine since May! It's killing me!!!

  • I did notice that Starbucks posts the caffiene level of each of their drinks and most, even venti-size, lattes are under recommended limit.

I cut out caffeine in the first trimester, now I drink a cup a day. I'd feel comfortable drinking 2 cups, but it's been a little bit of an aversion for me (I usually end up forcing myself to finish the cup so I can wake up).
  • Also for diet soda drinkers, Pepsi's diet sodas are now aspartame free!  They make the soda with sucralose instead, which is what Splenda is made out of, and it tastes about the same but without all the sketchy side effects of aspartame.

I've never been to Sonic! But may have to go (we just got one like 30 min away) if they have good ice. Crushed ice is my jam. I typically just do crushed ice out of the fridge at home. I also love the ice Ikea has in their machines. Ha, so random!

I've had no desire for coffee since I've become pregnant (but I really only drank the sugary/milky drinks anyways) and soda makes me feel like I'm going to die now. If I'm really wanting a flavorful "naughty" drink it's usually sweet tea. Otherwise I drink several glasses of milk a day and apple juice in the mornings (and water throughout the day). :)
  • I cut caffiene out about 7 years ago due to acid reflux. About week 15 my morning sickness was replaced with daily headaches. My doctor recommended caffiene instead of Tylenol for my headaches. I now have either a can of pop or small half caff coffee about every day. I really hope I can quit at the end of this! It drastically helps my headaches but I feel like I'm cheating on life somehow lol. They make caffiene support groups right?
  • I used to drink at least a cup of coffee every day and I always drank iced tea when I went out to eat. I've essentially cut it out altogether but I've gotten a mango iced tea lemonade from Starbucks a couple times :)

Yes! We have it at a few gas stations near me also. It's the best
  • I never cut it out. I have had horrible migraines for my entire pregnancy, and the caffeine + Tylenol seems to help.

  • I've never been a big coffee drinker, but I love love love diet coke. As soon as I got my BFP I stopped drinking it. I try to drink just water and an occasional crystal light. If I'm really craving the bubbles I'll have sprite. I've tried sparkling waters lately and those seem to satisfy the bubbly craving as well and are healthier with less sugar.
