Re: GTKY: what do you do for work?

  • I'm a zookeeper. I work with the African savanna animals: giraffes, ostriches, zebras, antelope, as well as australian critters: koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, emu.

I also help out with the rhinos and hippo. :)

Where are you a zookeeper?? I used to be one and worked with birds :)

I'm in the SF Bay Area. I'd be more specific, but internet safety... :) That's very cool! Before I was hoof stock, I was a raptor person! I loooove hawks, eagles, and owls. I miss working with them.

  • I tell people I'm a professional nerd.  In reality, I do IT hardware configuration and deployment, and project coordination for a major retailer.

I never thought I would love working with computers, figuring out IP address, and general nerding, but I really do love it!  It has helped me discover and expand my passion for spreadsheeting!

  • I'm a CNA at a hospital on a med-surg unit. I also am a Mary Kay consultant. After my second I opened a daycare so I could stay home with him. That was great for the time being but I love my job.
  • I'm a paramedic. Not really sure how long into this pregnancy I'll be able to continue my regular duties... I guess until I can't lift a stretcher because my bellys in the way?
  • I work in human resources for a large financial institution (the fun part where I interview folks and make hiring decisions/negotiating salaries.)My job is pretty low key--I work from home most of the time (mostly in sweatpants or pajamas). At the suggestion of my boss, I actually worked from bed a couple times in the last couple of weeks. (My boss is pretty awesome, his wife, who is due in November has had a VERY rough pregnancy so he's very understanding)
  • I am an elementary special education teacher. Right now for the past 6 years, I teach in a multi age classroom for students with emotional disabilities. Love every second of it!

I have a 4 and a 2 year old and I'm also a full time grad student going for my MA in educational leadership.
  • I do wedding flowers - a home business I've been running for 4 years now. Some weeks I squeeze in ~50 hours? other weeks just a few hours - it's all over the place. I don't have regular childcare (i.e. Grandma helps a day or so) so it's a juggling act!!

This job allows me the flexibility of working from home if the need arises and during maternity leave. I'm also an RN and at the end of dissertation for my Ed.D in Education... I finished my last MA while prego with my daughter. I love my students and work float in the ED every other weekend so I'm still able to see patients!
  • I'm an operating room nurse! I do everything from kidney and liver transplants to major elective cases, trauma surgeries, and emergency surgeries (everything except cardio-thoracic) I love my job, and while I had to tell them first about my pregnancy (before family even) because of work related hazards, they are supportive and understanding. My charge nurses really helped me get through my first miscarriage. My job is truly a blessing.

I'm an elementary school teacher by trade but I resigned to run a business we started after my son was born at 25 weeks so I could work from home instead :) I miss teaching a lot, but I love being home with my kids.

  • I am a high school math teacher. I have taught for 7 years but this is my first year teaching virtually. I didn't think I could handle the stress of teaching at my former school and being pregnant...(I was the head cheerleading coach among many other things). I decided to quit and teach online. Best decision I have ever made!!!!! I get to teach in my PJs and cook my own lunch. To all teachers out there, I highly recommend this!
  • I'm an interface analyst on electronic medical records. I'm having so much trouble focusing and getting my work done now that I'm exhausted all the time! I hope that the exhaustion eases up soon and that it doesn't start to show in my work.

  • @josie12367 how does your job differ from a radiographer? Or is it the same thing just different name?

My friend who is a paramedic worked right up till the day she was induced, and was back at it a week later... To be fair it was her 6th child and we are a very small rural volunteer ambulance crew.

I don't expect anyone to live up to that!

I completely understand you and had a meltdown just yesterday! I studied social work in Germany but decided to change fields shortly after. I worked for two years as a social service director in a nursing home before I decided to try my luck in real estate. Absolutely loved my job as a realtor in Louisiana, moved 2 years later to Houston. Now I work for a home builder as a sales consultant. Lots of overtime, work on days off from home and also work every weekend. We decided that I will stay home for a while, enjoy family time since my husband is off on weekends. But after one year, what am I going to do? Do I want to work every single weekend again? Will they hire me as a social worker again? So confused and scared!!! I love to finally start a family but I'm also worried not being qualified enough for something else.... Ugh, those hormones don't make it easy....
  • Director of Marketing for an amusement & gaming company by day. DH and I also have our own company selling a line of hot sauces and we are developing our own line of salsas. I also am VP of a pediatric cancer research non-profit and do graphic design on the side. I don't like to be bored.

    Finance Manager.

    Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring.

Me too! I'm a finance manager and yup, it is booooring. That said, I actually love my job!
Can I join the club? Not a finance manager, but I work Municipal Finance, specifically in Bond Issuance. No one ever knows what that is.

The short explanation is when your town builds a new swimming pool, I work on getting the money to build it, usually through selling bonds.

Taxes and finance, thrill a minute!
  • I am an Accounting Specialist for a school for Autistic kids. I am also in school part time.
  • I'm a pediatric nurse practitioner and lactation consultant
  • I'm an in-house attorney at a large corporation.  I was a civil litigator for a mid-sized lawfirm for several years where I was working 55-60 hours a week, but my current position allows me a better work-life balance.  Our legal department is pretty flexible, so I should be able to work from home for a while before and after the baby is born, so that will be helpful.  Some other moms in my department work from home a day or two a week, especially in the summer when their kids are out of school.  We also have an on-site daycare for when I come back to work full time, so that should make things easier.

  • I was an elementary school teacher until I had my DS. Now I am a SAHM
  • I'm a child protective social worker and love it! Slightly worried it'll be harder to not get attached to my cases with now becoming mom
  • Supervisor at an admissions department for an eating disorder residential & out-patient program for adult women and teens! Plan is to be a stay at home mama, post baby is here! :) nice to get to know everyone..
  • I am an RN (sounds like there are quite a few of us). I work per diem on a maternal/newborn floor (new moms and babies!). I also teach a few days a week at a local nursing school -- I love the balance of my two jobs, never get tired of either!
  • I am yet another RN. I worked in the ER for 6 and a half years and have been in labor and delivery for about a year. This is my 3rd pregnancy, I have 2 girls (almost 5yo and 2yo). I love being able to help provide for our family and still have 4 days a week to play with my kids (though working nights I am a zombie many of my days off)
  • I am a veteran turned student. Currently I am working on my bachelors in healthcare administration. Professional, I work for a non-profit organization and on the weekends I am a small arms weapons instructor for a private contracting firm.
  • I'm a social worker for child protective services. love my job and they're usually pretty supportive to the pregnant crew (since in an office of mostly women there are always at least 3 of us pregnant at any time)
