Any one have meat adversions?

I am almost 11 weeks and I feel normal almost during the day and worse at night but I'm not sure if it's my medicine that's making me better or if I'm finally almost done with morning sickness? ( I had to be put on medicine I lost almost 16lbs and couldn't keep anything down I was dehydrated so the medicine gave me some what of an appetite back) Still I have meat adversions the smell of meat, looking at meat makes me feel sick and normally I love meat? I'm worried this won't go away?

With DS I couldn't eat chicken at all for my entire pregnancy.  As soon as he was born I could.  This time, it varies day to day.  (This morning I swore my car smelled like raw meat, the drive to work was awful.)

So basically, it could last your entire pregnancy or it could come and go.

  • You are not alone. The idea of meat makes me sick.

  • With DS I had a red meat aversion. I couldn't even smell it. It took a year after he was born for me to even try red meat again. I just started really eating red meat in the last year and I'm starting to have the same aversion again. It's normal and it will go away. I now have a weird aversion to Hibachi, the thought makes me gag. I don't think I could walk in to a Benihana if they paid me. *BARF*
  • There was very little meat I could eat with DD and it continues with this LO. Pork is the worst. I can eat burgers and seafood, but that's about it. From my other friends who have had kids, it's pretty common.

  • The sight of uncooked chicken breasts makes me want to hurl. I just cannot bring myself to preparing it so we haven't had chicken in awhile. Other than that, I got a good whiff of my husband's baked frozen pepperoni pizza the other day and that threw me over the edge.

  • Even though my morning sickness (more like night sickness) has subsided at 12 weeks, I am still having the same aversion... I've never been a big meat eater but the thought of most meat is nauseating to me. I have been able to eat tiny amounts of steak or ground beef, but chicken, pork and seafood are absolutely out of the question. My poor husband is a big meat eater so he's been having to cook more often.

Funny tidbit though, I've been craving hamburgers like crazy!
  • Don't want to scare ya but my mum went off meat when she was carrying me and never touched it again... That was nearly 26 years ago! I'm worried I'll be the same as I'm slowly eating less meat and the smell of uncooked red meat turns my stomach!! X
  • Most of my aversions are with chicken.  Could not stand it during 1st pregnancy and this one is no different.  I do eat it, but just not what I want for sure.

For some reason when I am pregnant I like Asian food and thats about it.

Oddly enough right after I had DD I went back to normal very quickly.
  • I have heard that meat aversions and smells are one of the most common triggers for nausea/vomiting. Cooking meat especially. I myself have the same aversion and I try to avoid the smells as much as possible. However, I do still eat meat when I can and I often find I enjoy the taste if I just push through the initial aversion. The good news is yes, it should go away sometime in the second trimester when morning sickness and food aversions tend to go away as your hormones level out. Until then, if you really can't stomach meats, you can get your protein in other foods such as nuts, eggs, etc.
  • Chicken! I cannot touch chicken right now. I can't cook it I hate looking at it and the smell makes me sick. The worst part is before getting pregnant that's what my husband and I mainly eight so half of our meals have been him eating chicken and sides and me just eating the sides. It's funny because with my first pregnancy I couldn't eat avocados or guacamole, and I loved avocados and guacamole. Then when my son was born I could eat them again, but when I started feeding my son the only food he refuses to eat is avocados. Seems like this baby will hate chicken when it's born.

Nowadays I can't do chicken. Not too huge a fan of beef either. I still enjoy pork and lamb tho!
  • OMG YES. I cannot STAND meat since I got pregnant!! Especially raw meat....instantly makes me nauseous. Pretty much all I eat now are apples and carrots. I've lost 10lbs from being so nauseous and sick all the time. Hopefully it will get better in the second trimester!
  • I saw a pork commercial the other day and vomited. I can only handle ground beef and even then in small doses. My prenatals have iron, and there are other ways to get protein. I hear it goes away... I hope so. I really miss noodles and company's Parmesan chicken. On penne rosa. Sniffles

  • I also want nothing to do with meat, especially chicken. I had some good steak about 2 weeks ago but it was at a restaurant. Raw meat of any kind sends me over the edge and usually I can't get enough protein.
  • Me too! No interest in meat. Only meat that even sounds good is Jimmy Johns or a local deli. The cruelty of it!!
Hoping it'll come back in second trimester.
  • Thank you all for commenting I'm so glad I'm not alone! I'm hoping it will go away. My poor husband is starving :( and I miss making Mexican and all my favorite dishes!
  • So far I can eat all the meats I have tried, but preparing any meat is not happening. Raw meat makes me want to die, basically. This happened with my last pregnancy, too! My friend said after two babies she still can't prepare chicken at all!

  • There is no chicken in my house anymore. I used to eat chicken breasts 3 times a week and now the thought of it makes me nauseated
  • Related question for moms with little ones already:

Does this mean the children don't eat that type of meat you didn't eat during the pregnancy? Or is this just sth that happens to you during the pregnancy regardless of the baby's preferences?
  • Oh my goodness yes. I can't stand the idea of a steak or chicken. I tried to eat it for protein and iron but it's virtually impossible to get it down so I gave up. I've been trying to cook for Hubby but when he sees I'm not eating he feels guilty and says we don't have to have it. But like some of you said- HES STARVING! Poor guy....
  • Yes and it won't go away, my first son I couldn't stand ground beef cooking or the smell of it cooked, now he 5 and HATES ground beef. My 2nd son I couldn't stand chicken cooked or uncooked, he hates chicken. Funny how that works lol so far nothing with this one but I'm not gonna hold my breath I'm sure it's coming lol
  • @sbellendier So its true! Thats what my MIL told me too. Guess my baby won't eat seafood or chicken!
  • Looks like my kid might be a vegetarian, since meat is a real turn off for me these days too.  Which is especially weird because I've been paleo for about 3 years now.  I nearly vomited in the meat department, seeing all that raw meat.  Once it's cooked, it's slightly better, although I made the mistake of ordering a steak early in my pregnancy.  I took one bite and threw the rest out.

This assumption is probably about as accurate as guessing boy/girl. I could barely eat any meat with my daughter, or guacomole, and she eats meat and avocado just fine. I used to joke that she would be a vegetarian. Now she isn't a HUGE meat eater, her favorite proteins are Greek yogurt and hummus, but she certainly enjoys meat when the time is right.

I do think it might depend on the child. I know with my son I could not eat avocados during the pregnancy and now he will eat anything except avocados. He makes a face and just refuses to eat them. And this is a kid who has no problem eating spinach or kale but he can't stand avocados. I'm hoping it'll be different this pregnancy because we used to eat a lot of chicken in my house so I would hate if my child doesn't eat chicken at all.
  • Yes, ick... but it's getting a little better. Just this week I am able to cook again.

I don't think is a realistic indicator of what a kid will or will not eat... and kids also go through stages. My son used to eat pretty much anything, and now he hates most meat and all vegetables. I know it's just a phase.

I finally told MH about my concern with chicken breasts and how prepping it makes me sick. I went on to describe why it's making me wretch and then he told me to stop because he's grossed out. But since we can't go on eating red meat all the time, I am going to suck it up tonight and make a slow cooker Italian chicken for dinner tonight. Good part is, I don't have to cut it or prep it at all. All I have to do is place the chicken in the slow cooker, add some Italian seasonings and water so it's a win. :D

  • I'm usually a huge chicken eater and I even morbidly enjoy dismembering their raw carcasses (we get free-range from a friend's farm).   I still totally enjoy doing the butchering/prepping even with MS, but once I start smelling it cooking my stomach goes "NOPE."  I can't eat it anymore.   Chicken used to be my stomach's best friend.

So, I've dumped chicken. Beef on the other hand, is very very kind to me.

  • I've read that the meat aversion stems from caveman times when early humans didn't often cook their meat. So a meat aversion protected pregnant women from those more common food born illnesses. Additionally the carb cravings would have geared early humans towards fruits/vegetables which is safer than raw meat.
  • Love beef & pork but right now all I can handle is 4-6 oz of chicken on most day. The smell of cooking meat turns my stomach. Haven't been able to cook since morning sickeness started at 5 weeks. When I try meat it feels fine at first but my body quickly rejects it. Chicken in the only protein I can have and try to eat eggs once a week. Good luck! I'm also hoping this goes away and can eat more food.
  • I couldn't stand the thought of meat until today! 12 weeks today and all I want is fried chicken.
  • I wouldn't necessarily call it an aversion but if given the choice I can totally do without meat. That includes, chicken, beef and pork. I consume yogurt, milk and cheese to replenish my protein. I was on a high protein/low carb diet the entire 6 months before I got pregnant. Sometimes I wonder if it's my body's way of rejecting certain foods due to nutritional deficiencies, who knows? Just a theory.
  • I'm not having a meat aversion per se, but I'm normally a big meat eater and lately I've been finding myself eating something with meat in it, like a salad or noodle dish, and thinking "I don't need the meat in here." So weird for me.

  • Same here don't fancy meat and cooking chicken I have to just deal with it otherwise my other kids will suffer! I normally love steak and that's not on my list of foods. I love fruit at the moment though! I can only assume it's natures way of protecting you in case of bugs in undercooked food
  • Same here...the thought of meat makes me a little queasy. I have to force myself to eat it, and I'm mostly resorting to protein shakes and bars right now.
  • Chicken for me too (sort of). My husband cooked some chicken in a skillet and when I took a bite I nearly vomited. He's made it that way before and I've enjoyed it. What's strange though is I've had cravings for Wendy's chicken nuggets and boneless wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. Pregnancy is weird lol.
  • Tofu and eggs are my main source of protein at the moment. Meat is just not appetizing. Carbs, on the other hand, are my go to thing right now!
  • All I want to eat is fish! Meat doesn't taste good to me anymore.
With my daughter my only meat aversion was lamb, and I never really enjoy recovered. I used to love rare rack of lamb but now I can't even stand the smell of it.
  • Thank goodness I'm not alone. My boyfriend thinks im going crazy. I can't stand the sight of meat on a bone. But i can eat a meat patty or shredded meat.
