How are you sleeping...

I just wanted to get some input and opinions from yall! How are you all sleeping? still good quality sleep at night? restful naps? I have been sleeping horrible at night lately :( Plus, I am a stomach sleeper 95% of the time. What are your thoughts on this? I know early on its ok to sleep on stomach, but what about now at 20 weeks? I have tried to sleep on my side but its so uncomfortable. I also dont want to hurt the baby...

Re: How are you sleeping...

  • You won't hurt the baby, but it will get uncomfortable to sleep on your stomach really soon and you'll have to change positions.

My sleep position depends on how much my 2yr old is hogging the bed... Usually my back or side. I'm enjoying the fact that I'm actually sleeping (although interrupted) right now. Towards the end of pregnancy, a lot lf people wake up randomly in the middle of the night and are too wide awake to go back to sleep for a couple hours. This happened pretty consistently between 2am and 4/5am for me, which was really fun when I had to work. I'm sure it will be even more fun this time when I have to work AND have a toddler.

Naps are for sissies ;) (or maybe just for people without young kids)

I toss and turn a lot but not looking forward to the last 2 months when the babies are large and everything hurts. One pregnancy i used Tylenol pm for the last month. I don't like waking up feeling groggy though.

I'm a back sleeper. Have been trying to sleep on my side. I start off that way but then I wake up on my back! I also have been waking up to pee ALOT more then usual. I felt a lot of pressure last night down there. It's rough.
  • I have not been sleeping well at all. I am a back sleeper and have been trying to at least start out on my side, though I always wake up on my back. My doctor said not to worry about it too much, but I do find that it makes my back really sore. I wake up every few hours throughout the night and have a hard time going back to sleep. I have been taking Unisom which helps me fall asleep, but doesn't do so much to help with waking up 1 million times/night. :(
  • Like crap! I have sciatic pain on when I lay on my sides but that's the only way I can sleep! Laying on my stomach hurts, I try laying on my back with a pillow under one side, to prevent me from being completely on my back. That doesn't last long either. I am constantly flopping around on the bed. I usually am able to get away with napping on my tummy on the couch,l because it has a gap (broken) between a seat, so I let my stomach hang in there. Lol. I hope we can all get better sleep soon!

  • I have an issue w/ my joints so sleeping in any positions other than my stomach or back makes me have to pop my hips back in place whenever I get up to pee or for the morning.  The good news is that it really isn't uncomfortable when I'm sleeping on my side, just when I want to move.

I can still sleep on my half stomach/half side and feel pretty good but I know the baby does not like it so that will wake me up.

Right now, I can't complain though b/c I know it will only get worse so I am enjoying what quality of sleep I have now.

  • I don't think I've gotten more than 5-6 hours of sleep (interrupted, at that) for weeks and it's so draining! No naps here either, but only because most of my time is commuting or working or preparing to do one of those. I'm experiencing the same issues everyone else has... Discomfort with new sleeping positions (I'm a back sleeper and have been getting terrible hip pain when I sleep on my sides), waking up to go to the bathroom or from other interruptions and then having a hard time falling back asleep, acid reflux, etc. My snoogle helps a little but my dogs have commandeered it and it feels sort of flat now. Agreed with @DrillSergeantCat that if one more person tells me to get used to it in preparation for the baby, I may TP someone!

  • I've been waking up in the night a little more, having trouble getting back to sleep in the 4-5 range.  I just stopped taking the unisom, so I know that has something to do with it.  Overall, I'm still feeling better because I'm not so groggy in the morning.  I do nap most days, when my kids do. I sleep on my back, side, and still kind of on my stomach.  I can position my body pillow under one leg so that it feels like i'm laying on my belly, when in reality its kind of just floating. :)

  • I was sleeping pretty good until my toddler decided not to sleep this past week. She's always been a 10 hour sleeper and then a 1.5 hour nap after lunch . But she's been screaming bloody murder for naps and bedtime. She was up from 2am-5 last night. I blame MIL because she's been letting her nap with her is her bed when she watches DD. DD insists on sleeping with me now.
I don't usually take naps because then I don't sleep at night but I enjoy sitting down and relaxing while DD is napping
  • I end up only with about 6 hours a night. It's hard from being a back sleeper to trying to sleep on my side. I have also been waking up at least 2-3 times a night to pee. I thought I slept well last night, but I am pretty much falling asleep at work this morning. Ugh.
  • Not great, though a little better the last few nights. I always get up 1-2 times to pee and need a pillow between my knees. I often wake up on my back and I'm trying not to worry about that. My back just hurts if it isn't supported.

H has been sleeping poorly lately too and suggested we look at getting a new mattress. Definitely not looking forward to spending that $$$.
  • I was sleeping pretty poorly during the 1st trimester b/c of waking up to pee, but lately it's been great actually.  I've been really lucky this time around.  I know it's going to become worse when my hips start spreading, but for now i'll take it.

  • I'm in the same boat as most of you, waking up at night and having a hard time falling back asleep. I have always been a stomach sleeper, but now I have no problem sleeping on my side, using a body pillow. I do wake up on my back quite a bit though and it hurts my back and hips.

Mostly I just wake up to pee, and then can't fall back asleep for an or hour two. Last Friday I woke up at 2:30 and couldn't go to sleep at all, so I just stayed up. That was a rough day. I also wake up starving, and laying there for an hour just makes it worse. So I usually go have a snack and then can fall back asleep within 30 mins or so.

If it's this bad in only the second trimester I'm worried for the third!

  • I honestly sleep great at night. I take naps depending on what time I get up that morning. But I've always been a nap person. I still sleep on my stomach but I don't really have any kind of bump.
  • @cantobean we did the new mattress thing when we moved into this house 2 years ago, spent the extra $ for a nice pillow top, and now we hate it. There are 2 big divots that never reshape and it's super uncomfortable to roll into or out of. Several people I know swear by Sleep Number but I know they're way expensive. Good luck!

    imageLilypie - (zxAe)

  • @cantobean we just dropped a huge chunk of change on a new king size. The queen we had was too small, and the pillow top is no good for LOs. It's so much nicer now that we have more space, but boy did that purchase hurt.

  • I've been sleeping pretty well aside from crazy dreams and a sore lower back. Bought a Snoogle last week though and it's definitely the best $80 I've spent. Totally recommend it.

Where did you buy your Snoogle that it cost $80? I think mine was only $45-$50 on Amazon! (I say "only" even though I've never spent $45 on a pillow before lol)

  • I wake up at least once every night either to pee or to get comfortable again - I am just using a regular body pillow, I've been looking for a used pregnancy pillow as I can't justify the cost of a brand new one being this is our last child. I just accept the fact that I will most likely be tired in the morning and drink a coffee to help me survive!

  • I keep waking up like every hour or so and then fall back asleep. I still sleep on my stomach. Its not bothering me but i put pillows around me so where hes at hes got space lik i wuld be sleeping on my side. But i think it works because i got extea padding

  • I sleep terribly. It's been like that for months. I wake up to every little sound. The dogs, snoring DH, DS all threat across the house. I feel like its hopeless. Way worse that when I was pregnant with DS.

And I'm also a stomach sleeper... So now I'll add that I can never get comfortable.

  • 18 weeks here and my sleeping is absolutely miserable. Im lucky if I get 3 full hours a night. The rest of the night is spent constantly tossing and turning. I was very big on sleeping on my belly as well but as soon as I found out that I am pregnant I stopped. Miss it very much but its just a scary thought sleeping on my belly now lol. Hopefully the sleeping will get better.
  • My midwife told me I have exhaustion and to take a Benadryl before I go to bed because I'm not gaining any sleep. I also am a back sleeper so I start out on my side but am woken up a bajillion times throughout the night thanks to flipping to my back.
The Benadryl actually did work! My mom took my son for a night and I took a looooong bath with lavender oils and then a Benadryl and bam! I think I only woke 2x that night just to pee and I was instantly back asleep. Sigh, it was glorious.
  • I sleep ok on my side with a snoogle behind me and an extra pillow to hold onto. I wake up at least once a night to pee now, though. Ugh. And I'm napping a lot during my toddler's naps which I don't want to do but I'm just exhausted by the middle of the day. I hope that goes away soon. I had my thyroid and iron levels checked last week and I should get the results soon.

Almost $70 at Babies R Us in Canada. Add taxes and it's pretty close to $80. They're about the same on amazon.ca. Must be the currency conversion.

  • I'll be 19 wks tomorrow and havent had the best sleep in a while. If I'm not getting up every 2 to 3 hours to pee, I'm switching sides or readjusting the body pillow under my legs, knees or behind my back. Had some ankle pain a few days that eventually wore off but kept me busy for a few nights. I cant seem to wake up at my usual 5:30 am anymore. I know it will all be worth it in the end though.

That's annoying :( Sorry it costs so much more but I'm glad it's helping!

  • I wake up usually 3-4 times to pee but other than that I sleep great. I've always been a mostly side sleeper so that must help and I'm absolutely exhausted.

  • I toss and turn from my hips hurting. I've tried sleeping with the pillow between the legs but that makes them worse! Some days I just recline in our chair and sleep there. Hips get rest as do I!
  • The snoogle has saved me.  We justified the cost by making it a birthday present for me.  I'm a stomach or back sleeper so it's been hard forcing myself to sleep on my side.

I'm waking up numerous (2 or 3) times a night to pee but mostly going straight back to sleep.  However, I have narcolepsy and am off all of my meds, so even though I'm sleeping okay, I'm still utterly exhausted because I'm definitely not getting any restful sleep (which is normal for me).

Lol. Thanks. I think everything is just more expensive here. Every time we go across the border we're shocked by how cheap everything is! Even with our dollar being worth less it's still less costly to shop in the US. If shipping wasn't so ridiculous I'd shop on American sites for sure.

The Snoogle is on sale at Babies R Us in the US. Got mine for $45. Best money ever spent. Helps me convert from 100% tummy sleeper to my left side.
  • Not well. I've always slept on my left side (thankfully) so I haven't had to adjust as far as that's concerned, but I've been having the worst anxiety right at bedtime. It's like I can't get my brain to shut off - I toss and turn and fret. Then it feels like once I finally manage to fall asleep, I wake back up having to pee. I've been taking Benadryl to help me sleep, but I think I'm building up a tolerance to it - one used to knock me out, now it takes two, and I feel like I don't get as sleepy when I take it now.
  • I'm a stomach sleeper. I've managed to sleep on my stomach but on my side of that makes sense. It's starting to get hard to sleep on my stomach so I will be changing.

I have been sleeping okay, thanks to the help of Benadryl or Tylenol PM. However, I always wake up earlier than I need to (usually around 5 a.m.), and cannot fall back asleep for the life of me. I usually like to sleep on my back, but lately sleeping on my back has caused an incredible amount of back pain (to the point where it pains me to even try and roll over). I'm 17w+4d now, and everything is just uncomfortable. Judging by the number of responses you've received on this post-- you are definitely not alone. Together we stand in solidarity, sleep deprived and aching with discomfort. :-)
  • I haven't been sleeping well either. I'm usually a back sleeper but have been trying to sleep on my side the last few weeks. I used to prefer sleeping on my side, but now my hips go numb from the pressure (I think because they are wider than they used to be). When I roll to my back though I wake up from either dizziness or nausea. And I'm surrounded in pillows.
