@mellymar My LO does the same thing!! Sometimes he arches his back and tries to stand up so much that I can't even calm him down to burp. I hate when he does it in public too because I wonder if people are thinking I'm torturing him... #-o
@aligons yeah, in public I'm like 'oh good gods, here we go...' In public its kind of embarrassing. If we have to feed him in public usually one of us will take him to the car, or at least away from a bunch of people. I know I shouldn't care if my kid cries while we feed him - babies deserve to eat, too - but usually when we are somewhere else and having to feed him it's because we've been out running errands and decided last minute to stop by our local craft brew taproom. So, yeah, I don't want to be feeding my baby while he's screaming in a tap room. I'll usually give him some boob before we go in to tide in him over, lol
I'm very interested in BLW, although I'll admit I've not read up much on it this far. Im wondering how this will work with daycare? I know that it'd be easier to pack puréed foods for them once she's at that age, but I worry that she may start rejecting baby food if we're feeding her what we eat at home. I don't want to confuse the poor gal or make it difficult for them at her school. Have any STMs been through this? Would love to hear about your experience!

Our daycare fed DS table food starting at 6 mo. I had to go through the menu and circle what foods he could have, but that was it. He's always been a fan of tuna noodle casserole.
@Sammy K That's awesome! I'll have to ask them about that. They do serve food there for the older kids so maybe they're already more than willing to do this.
Today I was brave and made plans to meet a couple of friends at the mall for lunch. Lo is usually an angel out in public and the mall is 2 minutes from home so I thought it would go so smoothly. I ebf so fed him before we left and figured we had a good couple of hours. Well one thing I failed to consider when making these plans was that lo would be smack in the middle of leap 3. So half an hour in he turns into a total fuss pants. I feel slightly panicky as I know this means he wants to eat and I've never fed him in public before but I'm not about to let him starve just because I'm uncomfortable. So I rush off with him to try to find a quiet corner and turns out the mall has one of those family bathrooms where there's a lounge with seats outside where the actual bathroom is. So semi private, but still people going in and out. And there's a girl standing there waiting for someone to come out...I must have looked nervous because she smiled at me and said "I breastfed my 2 little ones..don't feel weird. Or feel weird if you want. It's ok!" and I just felt totally relieved when she said that, relaxed and fed lo in peace even when several other families came through in the meantime.
Story got a little longer than I intended...point is I finally nursed lo in public and feel so much better for it! I think it's just one of those things, you have to do it once to find out it's not so bad, no need to get worked up! I'm so glad that other mom was so encouraging. I think we need each other's encouragement to get through...which is of course why I'm on here so much!
@slynnn768 I'll give you "Ra Ra's"! That's awesome! I remember feeling weird doing it in public with my first. Each time it gets easier and more comfortable. Now on baby 2, the girls come out whenever I need to feed. This is mainly because I'm looking after DS as well so going someplace quiet and keeping him entertained is not easy. It's easier just to feed her as we are. Sometimes I use a scarf, sometimes not. Good for you for adapting and getting that first time over with.
@slynnn768 way to go! I've been taking progressively larger steps. First I was at the fair but WAAAAYYYY far away from everything. Next was in the car but parked on the curb with no sidewalk and no businesses on that side. Next was in the car again, but on the other side of the street where some people were walking by. Not a lot of people, but definite strangers, strolling along, who could see exactly what I was doing if they bothered to actually look. Which I saw a few did, because I had the window down and the radio on, so their attention was pulled that way. My problem is I don't really go anywhere...
My LO is 9 weeks and has started in the past week to only want one boob at a time per feeding. If I offer the other side he arches and screams. He will eat from both, just not at once. Anyone else having this issue? It's making me slightly engorged. I'm assuming he's getting all the milk he needs.
My baby is totally self-weaning... She now seems to prefer formula bottles which she used to be completely disgusted by.... I swear she is annoyed during nursing or she spends the time unlatching and smiling at me (so not always frustrated during feeding as if to indicate a flow or supply issue)... I may just let it happen since I am going back to work next week (2 nights) and don't plan on pumping... Ugh I just really hope I can still breastfeeding during nighttime feedings!
I didn't read through this so hopefully I'm not asking a question already been discussed. I've had very little milk today, I haven't had an issues for the 11.5 weeks bf. I started the mini pill last night, not sure if that has affected anything, but also have ran two days in a row (friend said exercise can decrease supply). My mornings usually get about 6 ounces total but only got about 2. I start back at work next week so maybe it's the stress?
@slr1229 hormones can affect your supply. When I started the mini pill I kick started my 1st period. So my supply dipped slightly. I have to work harder for the same amount.
@jesshrou my LO only eats one side per feeding. I started that to give my nipples a break, and to make sure she was getting enough hind milk. Babies become much more efficient at drawing milk, so your LO is probably getting plenty from that one side. DD will scream at me if I try to have her latch again. She definitely lets me know when she's done eating. As for your boobs, they will get used to the change. However, one will for sure be larger than the other when it's that ones feeding time.
My concern is that DD has decided to seriously complicate her before bed bottle for the past few days. We give her two bottles of expressed milk a day to allow her to adjust for when I go back to work. The late morning one she takes without a problem. The one at 7pm she alternates between screaming for her binky, screaming for the bottle, and cat napping in between. I think she just gets over tired and drinking from a bottle may be too difficult at that time. (She has a lip tie, and nurses the rest of the day.) It usually takes her anywhere between 15-45 minutes to drink 4-5 oz. The past few days it has taken her more than an hour. I feel so badly for DH too, because this is the one feeding that he gets to give her. We are considering bumping the bottle to 5pm and having me top her off with the boob before bed. Hopefully she'll be in a better mood for him then. It could also be that she is at the beginning of leap 3.
LO is 3 months tomorrow. She recently is too distracted to eat. She will start nursing and after a few minutes she stops eating to talk and then will eat for a few seconds and then pull off look around and go back the entire time. So aggravating! But it's very cute when she stops to talk
For those of you using bottles, when did you step up nipple sizes? We're using Dr Browns bottles and the size 2 nipples are listed for 3m+, but I'm not sure how to know when to start using them...?
Honestly, we never sized up our Dr. Browns nipples with ds. He had reflux, so we had to stop and burp him every ounce. He would take the bottle too fast and then spit it back up. So we didn't want the faster flow for him. It was never an issue and he never seemed to mind. The girls are 15 weeks today, and we still don't plan to size up yet. No idea when/if we will.

@mellymar We're in the same boat and I've wondered that as well. From what I've heard from other mom friends it will become obvious they're struggling to get all they want. I think we're just going to wait to see if we notice a change. Although, I've also considered buying a pack of size 2s to test.
@mellymar we started with size 2 last week with dr brown but I went back to 1 today. She too has reflux and her spitting went up dramatically, which I'm thinking is because she is eating too fast. Someday we'll move up!
Yeah I bought some size 2 nipples today, along with some new paci's (one of his favs is the soothie, which sizes up at 3m, and some other new paci's, just cause), and a baby's first toothbrush in prep for teething - tho we're not there yet, mostly to get dad used to the idea of brushing LOs gums/teeth because he doesn't do it and thinks I'm weird when I 'brush' LOs teeth by rubbing the washcloth on his gums. Anyway, regarding the nipples, guess I'll just let LO let me know when he's ready for more food!
@mellymar LO basically told me when she was ready to move up in nipple size -- previous nipples started collapsing when she ate.
Ah! This is helpful. An actual visual cue. Intuition is well and good, but nothing beats knowing FOR SURE that its time because something specific is happening
I have started staying home with LO and EBF. Still having to pump a time or two because of all the milk. But now LO is refusing to eat from a bottle...
@dancegurl1118 I'm so sorry for your continuing problems with bfing. Its totally not fair. I'm actually kinda mad at the cosmos for doing this to you. Hope you new duct resolves, and you stop bleeding.
I had no idea what you might be going through until early this morning... I have a super hard super painful spot on my breast... I'm assuming this is a blocked duct. I haven't experienced this before I know you have a multitude of times... Any advice for what's worked best for you to resolve it?
@christinabrtn I usually take two Advil, and start with heat right away. It is really painful, but massaging and hand expressing helps. I really deeply massage the knot and express the milk. Even when I feel like crying..Always feed LO on the side with the clog first until it resolves. Try and point LO's chin to where the clog is while you feed so that the movement of the jaw can help unclog it.

Thank you so much! I started with a few of those things already so I'll try the others and see what I can do!!
Probably super late but I actually got lo to latch for a few minutes tonight. I have been exclusively pumping since day 1. I offer the boob at least once a week, probably because I am too lazy to do it everyday, but tonight she actually took it instead of licking my boob. This gives me hope that maybe I can do one feeding a day.
Good on you for persevering! I can relate to you on this. I was pumping from day 3 (had to hand express for the first 48 hours) then little mister latched at 8 weeks!

I missed this post, and it makes my heart so happy! What a great moment for you two. Have you had any luck with BF since this post?
@virginiaunicorn11 I tried several times this week in hopes something would catch on but no dice. In her defense it has been a pretty crazy week with 3 therapy sessions and one very long cardiologist appointment.
So I've been EBF for almost four weeks now. I've started to pump to create a freezer stash for possible date nights, girls nights, you know fun stuff for mom...anyway, I got up early today and pumped. LO woke up shortly after and I tried to give her the bottle. It was a no go. Then I left the room and let DH try. Nope. After a fussy baby and many failed attempts I gave her the boob. Now I have a 3 oz bottle that she has played with in her mouth, but never officially sucked on. My question is, can I still reheat and try again later or does it need to be disposed of?
@lovethatcolosun what I've done is kept it out and tried it again next time she is hungry.. Although she won't drink a bottle so I end up wasting a lot. I would not heat it up again though
@lovethatcolosun I toss it no judgement on your guys practices I just read not to reheat it. I keep it out max 2 hours but she won't take it lukewarm anyway so if she doesn't take it at the beginning I just have to toss it. Probably wasted like 25oz at least. Horrible.

I still breastfed today and that's my accomplishment ~X(
I googled it's fine to give baby but I'm not gonna lie I gagged when I poured it in the freezer bag.
