im a 3rd time mom with this one! He's healthy and happy and moves all the time!! 28-29 weeks along and I'm smoking marijuana. It helps me eat as I'm sick a lot. Just wondering if any other moms have smoked with their pregnancies and how did it affect the baby. I'm thinking of trying to stop now as baby will almost be here. Please respond thanks
Hello - I personally do not have experience with this as smoking makes me super paranoid in my old age but my younger sister (21 at the time) smoked throughout her pregnancy (pot not cigarettes). Her daughter is nearly 5 now, has had no health issues and is sharp as a tack. We used to joke bc we were preggo at the same time my son was a maniac & her daughter was a couch potato bc I never gave up my coffee in the morning & she never gave up her pot, lol. But both are very typical kids- although I will say this time around I am cutting waaay back on the caffeine!
Please please speak to your OB about this. Google suggests several different possible defects with cannabis use in pregnancy, but then Google and I are not doctors.
I'm certainly not here to judge, but I would argue that you *should* stop smoking. I'm including a link with some research, and I'm sure there's more out there. We really can't just think of ourselves at this point anymore. However, this is something that is entirely left up to you to decide. If you want, I'm sure there are resources in your community to help you stop.
I'm totally judging... what your doing is awful especially because you probably won't stop once the baby has arrived. Just what society needs, another drugged up mom not taking care of their kids because she is more concerned with her own well being. Bravo!
Not judging you. Marijuana has tons of health benefits. I know (I could be wrong?) smoking cuts off oxygen to the baby, so that's not the healthiest thing you could be doing. Did a doctor prescribe it to you? You know, depending on where you get it from it could be laced with harsher drug or chemicals. Were you diagnosed with HG? Why are you having issues eating? Have you asked your OB for help? Could you possibly use oils instead?
You should absolutely quit. You (general you) could have a hundred babies that come out healthy and have no complications with mothers who smoke(pot and cigarettes) but you don't know every single thing that's going on with your baby and how smoking could affect them. Though I have no issues with people smoking in general (I myself have smoked pot) but when you're pregnant, no. There are other things that can help with sickness if you need it. You also need to talk with your OB, as there could be issues they may need to watch out for now because of the smoking.
There's really nothing I can say that won't get me banned. Quit your bad habits and pick them back up again once you aren't baby's only direct source of food/nutrients.
Honestly there isn't a ton of super damning research, but the research that does exist should be enough to convince you that it's not worth the risk.
There is not a lot of research, because, suggesting pregnant women knowingly expose their fetus to pot is very unethical.
OP this is absolutely ridiculous, in what universe can you justify using pot. I honestly have no problem with recreational pot use, however, using while pregnant is incredible irresponsible. Saying you use it for nausea is NOT an legitimate excuse. Fwiw, many states test newborns for drugs in the hospital, which will earn you a visit from DCS.

Your anecdotes are not helpful.
OP, you need to quit smoking. Why would you want even the smallest of risks to the health of your child? Here, there is a definitive risk to their future well-being. Marijuana is habit forming, but not physically addictive, so you should suck it up and stop.
I'm totes judging you. If you have a blood test at the hospital and come back positive for pot, you don't get to take your baby home. Not to mention it's probably too late and any ill effects probably already happened in womb. Stop being selfish and QUIT SMOKING. I can't believe this is even a question.
My husbands cousin was taking prescription drugs when she was pregnant with her third child. They tested the baby and she and her boyfriend lost all three of the kids to social services. It took them almost a year of going to classes and drug tests to get the kids back. Unless you are ok with all of your children being taken away from you, you should stop.
I know (I could be wrong?) smoking cuts off oxygen to the baby, so that's not the healthiest thing you could be doing
It does cut off oxygen. I just learned this yesterday. The nurse said she could tell if the woman had smoked anything in the last two hours as the baby's oxygenation levels (I believe that's what she said) are much, much lower.
I figured my comment wouldn't win me the popular award - but I couldn't just read this one and pass it over like I do most. I mean has all common sense gone out the window for some people?! "I use it medically" doesn't fly with me -- I get judged for having a diet coke and painting my nails, yet I can't throw some side eye at a pot smoking pregnant woman?! Lol
I highly think this is fake just to stir people up... Just my opinion though, considering she's 11ish weeks away from giving birth and she's just now putting thought into this. But hey, what do I know about OP? She could be that irresponsible in her judgement for all I know. Pretty sure every single one of us went through morning sickness/nausea (some were lucky to not have it) and I'm POSITIVE we all didn't turn to weed for relief. I couldn't imagine the guilt I'd feel if I was even near that stuff while pregnant. I feel guilty eating a freaking cheeseburger from McDonald's on occasion. BUT if this is real OP you definitely need to speak with your OB and QUIT smoking nauseated or not. There's other ways to go about easing your nausea.
I'm definitely judging you. PP have been more than polite in their responses and covered a lot of what I would say. I don't have any additional words that won't get me a warning or banned. I sincerely hope that this is MUD or ban-baiting. OP, please get help quitting.
Trying not to judge and failing. The little research available shows that smoking pot can reduce baby's oxygen levels and harm baby. Many women who smoke cigarettes are often to told cut back if they cannot handle the stress of quitting cold turkey. I'd highly recommend the same advice. Stop smoking, or drastically cut back on your use. Why would knowingly risk your baby's health? And each hospital is different. Even if your OB is not testing you, the hospital certainly will. You definitely do not want to lose your kids over pot!

Did it ever occur to you to seek an alternative, like one that might not hurt your baby?! Like pp's have said you should actually stop, not try to stop, especially if you don't want your children to be taken away from you or to cause birth defects (which lo has probably already developed). I am going to judge, because what you're doing is selfish. *clarity & typo -
OP is it prescribed marajuana? No? Then get off the drugs while your pregnant. And probably while your breastfeeding and are responsible for small children. What if there is an emergency and you have to be in a clear state of mind for the safety of your children?? Or God forbid have to drive them to the hospital while you are high?
Once upon a time cigarettes were recommended for stress relief, with no known side effects at the time. Just because there is not enough research either way currently, doesn't mean it's not harmful to your unborn child.
If you are smoking pot because it stops you being sick so you can eat - well there are prescribed medicines for that as well. Go speak to your OB or medical professional.
There are studies that it effects brain development in adolescents and young adults. What do you think it's doing to the brain of your fetus? You are responsible for the health and wellbeing of another human being. It's time to act like it.
I guess I feel strongly about this since my husband does some substance abuse counseling. The one thing he has found that will NOT stop people is saying that we're judging or that they're a horrible person.
Clearly it's weird that OP posted here about this rather than seeking real help. Of course it's an online forum and people will judge her.
Also to whomever quoted me, the research on marijuana during pregnancy appears to not be incredibly conclusive. Overall people shouldn't because there are clear risks, but it's not as bad as other terrible habits. By no means does this mean I condone the use. As I said in my first comment, clearly she shouldn't, but none of us can make her.
I'm not a "use the search function " person... But please use the search function. There was a thread that caused a HUUUUUGE argument between moms a few months back... it's time to just stop.

It is true that she has to be the one to decide to stop. But as PP discussed, the research is inconclusive because it would be unethical to conduct studies that willingly and knowingly endanger a child in the long term. Not to mention, depending on where she lives this drug is illegal, & if her doctor or other authorities find out, she could lose her child or face arrest, thus being 'made' to stop.
You may want to consider the fact that many doctors and hospitals will run a drug screen while doing bloodwork. My hospital did while doing other bloodwork with no notice to me. I only found out when I saw the paperwork in my online file. I don't doubt that could get you reported to CPS.

Absolutely. Some do drug screens via the urine they collect at your appointments. If you signed a consent to treat form, then they are allowed to do so without your knowledge.
Yes, I agree. I am in the medical field and as a doctor I know for a fact that all doctors are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse, and if you or or your infant test positive for cannabis (weed) the Admisnistration for Children's Services (or Child Protective Services) will have to be called. They may remove your child from your custody upon its birth. May not happen but it's highly likely it will. If you are a regular user cannabis may be in your system (hence you may test positive) for up to a month. I would suggest to stop now, as hard as it may be.
Speak to your doctor about safer alternatives to increase appetite and suppress any nausea... smoking marijuana for this reasons is a poor excuse for purposefully putting your developing fetus in harm's way.
Not to mention... if you test positive for marijuana during a prenatal visit/labor/etc you risk CPS becoming involved in your life and possibly removing your other two children in addition to the on you are currently pregnant with. Marijuana use impairs your memory, judgment and ability to react to current situations. This puts your children at risk if they don't have a reliable, safe, sober caregiver to watch over them.
I don't know anything about the effects of marijuana on a growing fetus but I do know smoking anything drastically reduces your oxygen levels which can cause some serious, serious complications. That alone is a reason to stop.
Look. It's going to suck to quit but not as much as you're worried it will. If you're suffering from hyperemesis gravadarum, your doctor will be able to help you manage it. This is not how to do it. HG is too serious, smoking also too serious, for you to try to manage on your own. You need to fess up to your doc. (S)he will help you.
Seriously. You know you have to do this or you wouldn't have risked major scorn telling us all this. I think you know what to do. The how? Your doctor. They're trained to handle this.
And btw just because some users know of isolated cases of pot smokers who's kids were fine, doesn't mean they represent a controlled study proving it's harmless. Don't take that bad data to justify continuing.
Yeah, I think there are two things you should consider. That when you are smoking, like actually smoking, whether by pipe, bong, j, or rillo, it can slow blow circulation. That's why you can get light headed. If it is something you feel like you need for your health (but are not in a place where medical is legal) than you should at least considered investing in a nice vaporizer, which gives you a cleaner way to the same ending. And the second would be drug screens. Someone else in the thread mentioned that... it's just something to consider, but I don't think most places would do that without some kind of probable cause or history.
I don't know if you are involved in the boards by reading or participating but honey lots of lovely ladies here have gone through hell and back to conceive. Many of us have had lots of difficulty in our pregnancy. I don't think any of us are fans of anything that's harmful or potentially harmful to our babies. Personally I think you should stop period. No "trying". I know what it's like to be sick (trust me) and unable to eat and hold food down. Even now I'm still under medication that is approved by a physician. And even though it's considered low risk and safe to take this medicine I still take the lowest dosage that my body will allow for me to eat enough to provide nutrirtion to me and the baby. Am I still nauseous and uncomfortable? Yes. HELL YES every blessed day. Could I safely up my dosage to be less uncomfortable? Yes but I don't want to expose my daughter to more than she already has been. And as long as I keep holding food down it doesn't matter if I vomit once or twice a day. It's better than the 20 times a day it was before. And I HATE. vomiting. I'll take pain before nausea. Pain I can handle. But guess what? it's not about me anymore. My suggestion go see your OB and have a frank discussion get some help and be responsible. And in my mom's eternal advice: suck it up buttercup.
Good lord. Here I am worried about having an iced tea while people are trying to decide if they should "try" to stop using drugs while they're pregnant. If you're too selfish to stop, you're too selfish to have a child.
I also think this might be a troller, but just in case I second PPs urging to quit. Comments have already been made about street marijuana & the possible fertilizers & chemicals they can contain. There's also the possibility of mold, which can make you really ill. Also, at the very least consider ingesting rather than smoking. We don't know what could happen, if anything from the effects of THC, but others have commented that smoking is oxygen deprivation, which we know is bad for baby. Vaping is better for your lungs, but not for oxygen deprivation.
You have 2 children already and you are due with this one in a 11 weeks, and yet you are just asking this? Okay mom of the year, stop being so selfish and take care of your children. I hope getting high was worth it when DCSF gets involved. Yes, totally judging.

Smoking marijuana during your pregnancy could impact your baby's brain development... and depending on where you are in your own development, could impact your brain development as well. https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/can-marijuana-use-during-pregnancy-harm-baby You're also at an increased risk of still birth associated with your use.

Wise up and stop smoking.
