Flame free Friday confessions

Re: Flame free Friday confessions

  • I overheard a bunch of interns -probably 22, 23 years old refer to The Lion King as "their generation". I hate when people act like they were around for or cognizant of something they really weren't. They were barely alive when that came out!
I grew up watching "Back to The Future" when I was a kid but it came out in 1985 and I was born in 1984- I wouldn't say it was the movie "of my generation".

  • I started crying tonight when DH made a comment about the state of the kitchen (which was only that way because I had just made him dinner) so after dinner he took our boys (ages 4 and 2) with him to the grocery store and came back with ice cream for me.

Pregnancy hormones helped me out tonight.
  • I seriously loved the little mermaid too! I had an Ariel dress, pjs, coloring books, etc. I have no idea how many times I have seen that movie! It's the best.
  • I have no time for homework. Between work, managing the house, taking care of the kids and all their activities too, I am spent and I have no time for anything school work had taken a back seat. I know I know I am almost done with my AA and if I just tough if out I will be fine but ugh I just don't care right now.
  • I confess I am hating being diabetic and pregnant. I am having an allergic reaction to my insulin pump supplies so I stopped having an insulin pump but now its looking like I may be allergic to an insulin. It's all my pancreas and immune systems fault! If I had beta cells that worked I wouldn't be in the hospital dealing with this.

The Lion King is just over 20 years old. Which means they were a few years old when it came out... The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie as a kid, came out the year I was born. Watched it every day, had all the bedding and room decorations, it was a huge part of my childhood. It's part of my generation...
My brother is 22 and he watched The Lion King everyday for years! My favourites were cinderella and The Jungle book. I was addicted!! They were released way before I was born but they're still apart of my childhood. I think it's stupid for people to lay claim to timeless classics. Especially movies like these that have entertained across generations.
I think in general talking about a movie being "our generation" is kind of weird, but I guess I don't see how a movie that came out when they were babies ISN'T there generation. I don't get whose generation it would be, then.

  • @AdventureMama, Like you I find the whole "laying claim" weird but do agree that the lion king would be apart of their generation and childhood.

I'll probably let my kids watch rated R movies before it's really appropriate - not horror or violent movies, just the ones with adult themes and content, because then I can watch them too.

Just don't make them watch the scary ones! My mom loves the scary movies so she had me watching tons of them... I absolutely hate them now and I'm the biggest chicken
Oh god, I don't even watch the scary ones! I'm such a baby about that kind of stuff.

I loved Grease - watched it everyday - but I wouldn't consider it part of "my generation". I think if you can remember seeing it in theaters, you can claim it being "of your time." If you can't remember seeing it in theaters, it's still something you may have grown up with and appreciated - but it isn't considered to be part of your generation. But, "generation" is a broad term - I'm speaking colloquially.
I just thought it was funny that they were probably born in 93/94 and barely remember the 90s but claim to be 90's kids.

I think someone born in the 90's referring to themselves as a 90's kid is accurate, not funny.

My sister was born in 1995 and would certainly consider Lion King of her generation. She loved it so much she wanted to name my brother Simba and it was her first Broadway show at like 3. I agree with PP's that it's peculiar to set parameters on these things. No upside.

  • I was born in 84 but barely remember the 80's. So, I consider myself a 90's kid. Whatever it's dumb, I just think of you can't remember it, you can't claim it as yours.

  • I was born in 90 meaning I don't remember probably half of the 90s. I'm still a 90s kid. That's sort of the definition of it. You are a kid of whatever decade you were born in. I guess I could see someone born in 89 thinking of themselves as a 90s kid though...

  • Yeah I was born in 88 and I consider myself a 90s kid, I was way too young to remember anything 80s. I remember the 00s a bit better and I still consider myself a 90s kid.

  • @SoSweetTea1124 I am super happy for you and your son's rash wasn't too bad. I used to get strep throat all the time and I got scarlet fever one time from it. It was over Christmas when I was probably about 8 and it was the worst thing I had gone through. I really couldn't do anything and I just laid in bed all week trying so hard not to scratch. And being 8 and it being Christmas time it made it really hard. So I am glad you didn't have to go through all that and that you were able to hold off and decide on using the antibiotics.

It's hard because I can't get anything I want done from here. I'm a hot mess.
The silver lining is I got admitted to the hospital I'm delivering at and I love it way more than I thought I would. The food is good, the nurses are awesome, excellent OB and Endo docs.
  • This is a day late but...
I'm starting to have issues with weight gain-emotionally. I know that I have a baby growing in me and I have to gain weight, but now that I actually am gaining, I'm struggling with it. I feel awful for feeling this way, and I probably sound extremely selfish (and stupid). Before I started gaining, I was really excited to have an excuse to pork out! Haha.

I was born in 89, I'm a 90s kid. And like I said, I was born the exact year Little Mermaid came out and would consider it my generation. Who else's would it be?

  • I was born in 1990 and I'm a 90s kid. My sister posted this photo the other day and I remember ALL of these things, so what does that really make me? Lol. As for being able to watch it in theaters, that means I would be a 2000s kid because I didn't go to the movies probably until I was 10, and I definitely don't find that accurate at all.

People born between 1978 and 1985 where they are old enough to remember seeing it when it came out and young enough to enjoy it.

I gave the Lion King example to several people - in person- without giving away my opinion and every one agreed with me.

  • I was born in 92, so I'm not allowed to like the lion king cause I didn't see it in theaters? There goes my childhood.... My life no longer has meaning.

I definitely consider myself a 90s kid and I was born in the mid-80s. I claim Saved By The Bell, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and most of the TGIF lineup. Those are some shows that continued to be loved for many decades after they ended but 90s kids waited every day/week for a new episode and followed all of their fashion advice. :\">

I do think it's hard to say a classic is of a certain generation though. Also, what decade you grew up in doesn't mean the same as what generation you are in. Most (not all) of us are Gen Y/Millennials even if we grew up in two different decades. So a lot of our experiences can overlap.
  • Its a day late but what the hell. I just sat through watching three hours of "One born every minute" while bawling my eyes out and now i'm a huge mess, red puffy eyes and all :-S
  • @SoSirius it's Friday night and the moon is bright. Gonna have some fun, show us how it's done T-G-I-F! :-\" :)
