Baby symptoms?

So, LO decided to take the grossest poop ever in Buy Buy Baby today. Side note: their feeding rooms are quite nice and comfortable. They had real changing tables, gliders, and even bottle warmers. Anyway, LO's poop was so weird. It smelled terrible, usually it's sweet smelling. And it was like stringy and sticky, and curdled. Still yellow. She's EBF. Anyone experienced this? I might try cutting dairy again. I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary.

ETA: she's also been spitting up like crazy today. It drenched the back of her head during a diaper change, and she covered my shoulder in curdled milk.

  • @virginiaunicorn11 great analogy about the nerds from SBTB... My LO sounds the same. I actually heard a real laugh out of him during his nap this morning- I wonder what he was dreaming about.

  • LO is 12 weeks and not grabbing or batting at toys. She will feel her toys that I put next to her with an open palm but doesn't grab at them. Abnormal?
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

My LO has some weirdish poops lately too. He goes about every 2 days... Which I am pretty sure is his new normal. And when he does go, the consistency is definitely weird. He is 10 weeks old today.
I second your thoughts on the buy buy baby feeding rooms... So comfortable.

Mine turned 10 weeks yesterday! Maybe it's just normal changes in their digestive tracts?

Mine turned 11 weeks yesterday and same thing here. He'll go a day without going, then the next day his farts will be smelly and he'll fill a diaper and it will smell. He pooped constantly yesterday but has yet to go today. DH researched and read that their digestive track is changing right now and it's normal. Glad to know we're not alone!

Ok so my 12 week old has massive amounts of drool. Like froth at the mouth, a constant faucet streaming down and soaking her shirts. My understand is that this can be normal, but is anyone else dealing with this? Any tips? My biggest concern is that she doesn't always swallow it and so when she's reclined, particularly in her car seat, she chokes on it and get freaked out and doesn't breath. It ends in red faced tears and is totally scary. I've had to pull the car over when driving twice now.

On the other hand, I think she's swallowing a lot of it too and then she is spitting it up - beyond drooling it out as well.

I don't think there's anything a doctor could do to like, reduce saliva!

@hoodoll82 I was just going to ask the same question. My little guy's saliva fairly thick and mucusy, he always seems to be coughing and choking. It even seems to get in the way when burping him. I can hear and feel the burp come up, but not all the way out. Then later he will spit up a lot of mucus.

Like you say, there's not much you can do about extra saliva. I find making sure LO has his pacifier eases my mind a little, it keeps him swallowing.
  • I said it yesterday but I'll say it again...HOLY 12 WEEK LEAP. Who is this baby and where is my sweet girl? I'm so happy we have a check up tomorrow because I'm literally questioning if she's sick since her eating/general demeanor are SO off. Ugh!

  • not a symptom but my LO at 7 weeks is almost too big for 3-6months clothes :((

An interesting read... This is just one article regarding the issue..

    https://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/kids/art3497.html

It is very easy for me to applaud this article, and also to state that I agree with this point much more broadly than stomach issues in babies: "We are medicalizing normality."

However! I was really struck by Sammy K's point that she used to secretly think difficult babies were a parenting fail... And so while I am fortunate enough to have a pretty healthy, easy baby ~so far~, I'm not real willing to tempt karma by my old ways of thinking. Which would be to give this a standing ovation. If my kid had colic or seemed to have severe stomach trouble, I bet he'd be on medicine faster than I could dry my tears.

But generally, I do agree that as modern medicine becomes less holistic, we collectively do over-medicate and "medicalize normality."

I'm glad you posted this, thank you. It's been on my mind.
Working next to doctors of all specialties, they will admit... "Parents come in, they need something... They aren't satisfied when we tell them your child has a mild ear infection, it will go away on its own give it time..they want medication now" ... But I agree @virginiaunicorn11, if I had a fussy baby I may try anything to make it better... But what we don't realize is that even seemingly harmless medications, are not without side effects. It's such a crap shoot.

    I work in the social
Service industry where we do medication administration to adults with intellectual disabilities. We are required to complete training with a pharmacist regarding medications, side effects etc.

In terms of over-medicating/medicatig too quickly there is one thing that I took from the training and that was the following...

"All medications are poisons" - depending on the dose/concentration. I have found due to this line of thinking medication is my last resort now instead of my first course of action...

Eta- needed to finish my thought...

LO is currently on Zantac and special formula... looking back I wonder if we were too hasty in making these changes, but it's so hard, when at the time you are scared for your baby and she's so sad! Our doc had us go off Zantac to see if her symptoms came back, and they did, but it all feels so unscientific. I know our doc would like us to wean off the meds as soon as we feel comfortable.

This is why I believe in finding a doctor you trust, who fits your "philosophy." And why I like Osteopaths. If a doctor told me a mild ear infection would go away on its own, I'd be thrilled!
Was just trying to say I know my opinions are easy in the abstract. I didn't want to make some of the good mamas on here offended or second guess themselves.

I find @hoodoll82 's response quite brave in its honesty. And is the example of what I mean when I say it is easier to believe something in the abstract vs when it's your own kid.

@HayesRN13 - you post good articles that give intelligent thought to things I am just kind of feeling. Thank you. I also like that women here who I respect (like @hoodoll82 ) are willing to share their experiences, so I can see the flip side of my views (or like the Snuza discussion on another thread).

  • @bethanne09 I remember reading a treatment for cradle cap. It recommended leaving coconut oil on for a while (perhaps 10 mins before bath time? I would search it online), then using a soft bristled brush or a fine-toothed comb to brush off any dead skin, then washing baby's head with regular baby shampoo.
  • swiebe said:

@bethanne09 we use mustela foam shampoo, it works great! It doesn't clear all the scales, but it gets all the loose flakes and his head looks so much better after each use. The stuff is in a blue and white bottle. I got it From target but I believe babies r us carries as well.

@bethanne09 Our LO had REALLY bad cradle cap and I also used the Mustela foaming shampoo. It cleared up in 2 uses! I just massaged it in, let it sit during the bath, and then used a baby comb after.

Is anyone dealing with baby eczema? My little guy has it on his face. It was really bad around 6 weeks, so bad that we were prescribed a topical steroid oil. It cleared up, but this week has re-emerged. I have never dealt with eczema, so I've been doing a lot of research and have bought a few different creams, but if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated!! I feel so bad for his little red face :(

Yeah, ours was really bad for a while, but Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream really cleared it up. Of course who knows if it will work for you. Their skin is so sensitive. We also don't bathe her very often, just a couple of times a week. I think the warm water dries out her skin.
  • @ChardeeMacDennis Thanks! I'll check out that cream next and see if it works for his skin.

Wondering if anyone is going through something similar and if so what you are doing...

LO has been doing so well with both breast and bottle feeding. He has always spit up a little but never anything concerning.

Since he got his oral vaccine he seems to spit up copious amounts following breast feeding during the day (not at night) and during the day he eats for a much shorter duration but still about 3hours apart. When I give him a bottle of breastmilk during the day he is fine normal spit up.

Regardless of whether he eats straight or with breaks for burps the outcome is still the same. I've also noticed that it's been much harder for him to get burps out since the vaccination. I'm going to call in for an appointment with his Pediatrician... But I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing the same or has any advice?

I've also noticed since he has been seemingly eating less that my breasts are not "filling up as much" as they used to. Could this be related?

    Any thoughts are
    Much appreciated!

    The
I haven't noticed more spit up, but I have noticed some of the other changes although I didn't link it to the vaccine.

If I feed my LO every 3 hours, he doesn't eat as much. I've started really waiting on hunger cues and fussiness. He now eats about every 4 hours. My breasts also don't feel as full, but from what I've read, at first your engorged because your body is still trying to figure it out. Once your body figures out what your baby is eating, you stop making so much extra. I still pump a bottle every morning and get just as much as I used to, but I don't really have that painful, full feeling like I used to.

Maybe someone else will have more to add and hopefully the doctor will have some answers. Good luck!
  • @christinabrtn @amccoy129 I've heard the same about breasts not feeling as full. I also don't feel nearly as engorged, and stopped leaking as much even though I am producing the same amount. Your body just gets acclimated to the change.

As for LO eating less. I don't think they are eating less. They are just getting more efficient at eating. DD used to take 15-20 minutes on each side. Now she eats 5-10 minutes on one side per feeding. I know she's done because she detaches, gets burped, and I offer the boob again and she doesn't want more. I know she is still eating a good amount because I weighed her on a baby scale, nursed her, then weighed her again. She drank 2.5 oz that feeding. The LC also said that each feeding can differ. She may drink 2 oz one time and 3 another.
  • ^I'm dealing with this too. She eats about 3-4 hours apart during the day now and spits up a bit more but is fine at night. I'm not as full as I've tried to pump after a very short feed and I barely have anything left.

My LO keeps pulling with nipple in mouth to opposite direction, literally feels like he's going to pull my nipple off... It's so frustrating and it seems it started after his shots.. Probably just a normal phase but I think about it being related.. It's like as if he doesn't want to eat.. But then cries and wants it right back after it eventually snaps out of his mouth.. Ouch
  • @HayesRN13 Maybe your LO is trying to trigger a letdown?

He def does it after because I can feel my letdown, He also does it with bottles which he's been taking breastmilk in bottles since day 1.. He will eat for a few minutes and then pull away like he's distracted, then start crying until he's eating again.. I don't know hopefully it's just a weird phase that will go away, today actually has been normal ... Fingers crossed... Babies are weird
  • I've fed LO off both sides since she was born. The last few days she will take one side and be on for only 8-9 minutes (I know she's not getting 5oz in 8 minutes) and then cry and arch when I try and feed her the other side. Her latch is really narrow and shitty too, almost back to pre-tie revision. The only time she feeds long and well is her 6am dream feed when she barely has to latch because I'm so engorged. Between this and not taking bottles I don't really know what's going on but I'm so frustrated. She still has the same amount of wet diapers but not the same volume (not drastically different but one or two of them are just a small pee not the usual soaking of the diaper). Ughhhhhh
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • Ok, I looked this up in the search, and didn't find any real matches. DD screams, blood curdling screams, when her diaper is wet. She can go from smiling to screeching when she pees. Sometimes it's even before she pees. At 2 mo old, she goes through around 15 diapers a day. She will sit in her poop for a while, but we know immediately when her diaper is wet. Someone said its because poop stays warm and pee gets cold. I feel like something is wrong, but my ped has said that it's just what babies do. She doesn't have a rash and doesn't get upset when we have to wipe her. We use honest brand diapers (I like that they are eco friendly-er), but wonder if I should switch. We've tried some pampers and huggies that people have us, and she does the same thing in them. Even before the line turns blue. Ugh....so many diapers.
  • @cait7425 I dunno if its possible in a baby, but I wouldn't see it as *impossible*. I guess just *unlikely*, but... Bladder infection / uti?

ive noticed that my LO will start to pull away when he has swallowed too much air and needs to burp, or he will pull off my nipple when he needs to take a breather/also has to burp. it definitely hurts.
  • Your baby can have a bladder infection. I've taken care of a few babies that have reflux of the ureters and get recurrent ones..... Have you taken babies temp? The babies with it I've seen present with a temp each time.
  • Also my baby pulls away from the nipple screaming and he always has a burp stuck. It's awful. He gets so pissed and I can't get him to relax to get the burp out! Babies are def weird
  • @klkonwi I think you're talking to me. I've taken her temperature in the past, and it was totally normal. I'll take it again tonight. Thanks for the advice!
  • Each time when DD got a UTI when she was young there was no fever, so I always tell patients and ask my personal dr to check for it no matter what
  • Another here who will have their LO suddenly turn viciously to the side and stretch my nipple out with him. Yup, it hurts. I also try to burp when he does that a few times
