GD momma's update 8/10

Re: GD momma's update 8/10

  • 33 weeks now and I've had a change in my numbers too. Not too high but about 10 per meal, glad I'm not the only one! I couldn't figure out what I was doing different.
  • Loading the player...
  • So I finally took a 30 minute walk last night after dinner and had a normal fasting number this morning!  Going to try again tonight and see if that's the trick!  I notice on REALLY stressful work days my numbers are higher than normal.

I was reading the home page yesterday for my number of weeks to 33 and it said that our metabolic rate is gaining speed!  Need to find away to get some more food in there!  Have any of you having issues changing your diet try to eat what you were before just to see?  I found I haven't really had to change anything other than I make sure I have some type of veggie with each dinner....especially if the main meal is high in carbs.

  • Yes, your sugars are going to get worse, that's how it works. What I ate week 20 and needed 30 units of insulin, I eat now at week 30 and need 60 units of insulin. There is nothing you can do about that, but eat less carbs, or up your meds if you are on them. I really don't know if walking does have anything to do with it or not, because first few weeks I was taking a nightly walk, and not only did it not help my fasting, it didn't even help my after dinner numbers sometimes....There just isn't a "trick" to it lol. We will probably never figure it out. Just keep in mind for your second pregnancy, they will most likely put you on insulin, because the resistance will be worse.

  • Thanks ladies. I put a call into my doctor because I don't think I can do this on diet alone:( I don't feel like I am eating enough and my dietician said the baby needs carbs so restricting them to get good numbers isn't a wise choice for me. I don't normally eat a ton of carbs but I think I would have to cut them completely to get my number right at this point, so insulin her I come! I'm sorry other are struggling too :-S
  • I saw two different OB docs in my office and both said just do a mostly low carb diet despite what the dietician said. My numbers are only good if I eat low carb, even with insulin.

I usually eat one piece of fruit a day as a snack but otherwise I'm trying my best to lay off any kind of carb foods like bread, etc.
  • @beanie1977, seriously mama, take more insulin....Just check your sugar at 2 hours to make sure you haven't dropped. That's insane to tell you to take insulin and do low carb. WTF is your doctor thinking??? Eat whole grains, eat rice, eat quinoa, eat beans....

  • How much water is everyone drinking for ketones? I've been on a stretch where I'm testing "small" every morning. Diabetic counselor/dietician say I'm eating enough carbs and that my bedtime snacks seem to have enough protein. They keep telling me to drink more water, but I drink probably 12 - 14 cups a day. Thinking water is not the issues?
  • No idea. I have never been told to test keytones since I eat carbs. But water has been a problem this last week, and I can feel it. I try to fill my ultra venti reusable starbucks cup like 8-10 times.

  • Started metformin tonight. Hoping for a good fasting number tomorrow! Water hasn't been an issue for me but my doctor said my ketones are fine...
  • Frustrated... Have to start insulin tomorrow because my fasting numbers have been high. I see that many of you ladies are taking oral medications to help control your sugars. My nutritionist is immediately jumping to insulin, and my highest fasting has been 111 (one time) and is usually in the 98-105 range. I really don't want to do insulin :( any ladies on insulin have any words of advice?
  • My doc actually wants me to switch from NPH to Levenir? I think that's how you spell it, but apparently insurance won't cover it...it was called in late tonight, so now we wait. It's actually a 24 hour acting insulin. They think the NPH is being taken too soon at night to cover....UG. I just think my sugar doesn't want to do what they want it to.

  • No advice but it's not that bad. The needle hurts way less than the pricking your finger.

Expect a learning curve. I was started at 10 cc dose and am now at 42 cc and my sugars are still in the 90's!! I'm wondering what else they will have me do as the syringe only goes to 50. I'm supposed o up it by 2 cc a night until I get a number under 90. Don't expect perfection right away. I was at 10, then 25, then 34 and I just keep bumping up.
  • @beanie1977, they have a 100cc syringe, lol! Been using them since day 1 haha!

  • @MrsFaust1432
I was moved to insulin without trying oral medication. It is tough, I won't lie. I started with just lunch and night time. And now I'm on lunch, dinner and nighttime. It has increased the dose to 32 units a day by now.
With your fasting numbers, have you noticed if sleeping longer than usual (staying within 8-9hrs of sleep) has made a difference?
I told my nutritionist and she said closer to 8 hrs of sleep, that is when your body considers it fasting time. Snacks for me make it worse since I average 6hrs at the most of sleep.

Like they mentioned, it has a learning curve. Just keep in mind it is for the health of your little bundle.

  • @MrsFaust1432 I am on the oral medicine but it is not helping yet:(. Not sure if they will up my dosage today or switch me to insulin. I have heard that insulin is easier to control...
  • Morning everyone. At the suggestion of the OB and not the dietician, I tried taking 60 units at 10 pm, and then around 1230 am woke up and took another 20. My fasting was 93 this morning....Who knows if that's why.

  • My numbers are still kind of all over the place. I've been doing the GD thing for a month now and have had maybe 12 or 13 numbers over 120 and one of them being 164. I thought maybe I was becoming more intolerant of carbs but depends on the day. Totally misbehaved at a wedding and had a sugary drink, potatoes, corn, fruit, cupcake and a few mints and tested 103?!! But last night I had a smothered burrito with some rice, didn't eat it all and tested 134. My morning fasting usually range 85-95 with 110 being the highest but nothing I do seems to make those numbers better. When I think they will be high for certain reasons the test comes out lower than when I've done the opposite. I have an appointment tomorrow so we will see what they say. Even after I was diagnosed my OB didn't say a single thing about it and the dietician appointment was about 15 minutes. I'm so confused!
  • @saveinsincity I regularly get 8-9 hours of sleep a night. Maybe if I didn't sleep as long it would be lower? Or maybe I need to eat my snack later?

I don't know... I have my appointment in about 2 hours so we will see how it goes!
  • @whitemn04, I've found my numbers creeping up and acting all crazy lately too, and my OB says not to worry it's just hormones. So for example, this weekend I had some thin-crust pizza with spinach and bacon on it. Saturday after dinner my numbers were under 120. I had the leftovers Sunday for lunch and got 140.
And last night I had some mac n cheese along with bacon and asparagus for dinner. I thought surely that would spike me, but nope. Not even when I had twice as much cheese along with leftover asparagus but no bacon for lunch. Again numbers in range.
But the Cheerios I had yesterday and did fine with spiked me to 164 this morning. Same foods, same portions.

Are you on glyburide or any other meds? That's the only thing that helped my fasting numbers, though it's looking like I may have to increase my dose. It's all hormones and so weird.

  • Most of my fasting hasn't been higher than 110.  Most were between 97-105 and when I met with the dietitian she said that it wasn't that bad over and was going to recommend me not be put on anything.  But my doc wanted to.  Hadn't heard from him since she made her recommendation but I bet when I go Thursday he puts me on something.  I find I can eat more carbs in the afternoon and for dinner and have great numbers.  I guess I just tolerate more carbs later in the day because I've been moving around a lot more at that point of the day.  Movement and lots of water is supposed to help get numbers lower.

I'm not on any sort of medication. I haven't even been to the dietician to check numbers. They said to make an appointment with my next OB visit which is tomorrow. I was told to call if I had ketones show up in my urine but that's all been negative. I feel like everyone else's dieticians are more involved than mine is.
  • @whitemn04 I've only seem my dietitian twice.  My first initial visit when they gave me the monitor and told me where to have my numbers at and what to eat.  Then I saw them a second time three weeks later to go over my numbers and I didn't like the nurse they had me go to.  She was like...did you really think that a piece of peanut butter toast is 2 carbs counts?  Well does she know how much PB i put on my toast!?  I also tried to email them to give me help on my fasting so I had a chance to at least try to get it down before making a decision on medication but it took forever (5 days) for her to email me back but that was because I left her a voicemail telling her I emailed her questions!

Everyone keeps saying that our numbers are going to go up the later into pregnancy we get so I'm not looking forward to that!

  • So insulin training wasn't that bad and neither was the needle. I'm only having to do 10 units at bedtime to start. On another note though, I also had an ultrasound at today's appointment and they said she is measuring 6lbs 8oz already!!! I still have 5 weeks and 4 days left!!!

I haven't seen a dietician at all, just my OB. He's the one who looks over my numbers each week and who put me on glyburide.

No complaints here because I already have weekly appointments with him; I don't need to add more on top of that.

  • @MrsFaust1432 , I had an ultrasound about 2 weeks ago and he was only weighting at 4lbs 13oz. I have a feeling he will be in the small size. We shall find out in 3 weeks.

  • Are you ready for this :(( my medicine will remain the same for the next two weeks but my endocrinologist wants me to walk for a 1/2 hour 5 times a day. Basically after every time I eat. I asked if she was crazy and explained I would try but I work full time. I am already taking tons of time off for my five appointments a week. Thank god my job allows flexibility and have felt good so far. Anyone think this is insane? (Rant over)
  • Anyone else having trouble with inconsistent readings? This morning I got up and took my fasting numbers and the first reading I got was 103! I immediately checked it again using the same finger/same stick and got 89. Thank goodness I checked it again.  What the what?
    image
  • Got my meter downloaded and it shows I had only 4 above target. I thought I couldn't be over 120?! The dietician didn't even talk to me. Handed me the papers and said here you go. Heading in to the OB now so we will see.

It never dawned on be to check it twice...but I will try that next time I get a high reading.

On the download, the meter shows only the numbers above the Type 1 & 2 range. If I used that scale I have only been over twice and under once in the last month. My meter was reading today the my average is 101 for all of my readings and the last 32 of 32 readings are in range. When I saw my endocrinologist she circled about 15% of all of my numbers. There protocol is if over 20% of your numbers are out of range than medication needs to be added or adjusted. I can't help but still be frustrated with the whole GD thing but only 7 weeks to go!! On a positive note I had an A1C drawn and it was perfect so I wasn't even pre diabetic before I was pregnant!!
  • I have gd and seems to keep getting worse.i have now been on insulin for 2 weeks and have had that increased several times. I always eat within my carb range.I try to walk as much as possible but am wore out at this point and feel like a failure. So far she is healthy and not too big. It's just so stressful.
  • My dietititian recommended walking 30 minutes after dinner to get my fasting down.  It worked one night but not the next two so I gave up on that route (kept my snack the same).  But yes walking or exercise helps brings your numbers down after meals.  I have an office job and it is hard to find time to get walks in when you are meetings all day!

And yes @llynde5.  I'd have a hard time trying to do that 1/2 walk 5 times a day without being pregnant!
    image

  • @LLynde5 walking 1/2 an hour per day seems reasonable to me, but 2.5 hours total? No way. And I'm a SAHM so I have time, just not energy.

    a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Parenting Tips"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1c2dc3.aspx" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • Doc was happy with my numbers.. Said I'm a soft case and to keep monitoring for any changes. Still have to start weekly check ups and baby actually measuring about 30.5 weeks and I'm at 32. And I've lost 4 pounds so have gained a net of 11 so far. Hopefully I can maintain and keep this little healthy!
  • I have GD and was just prescribed Glyburide for fasting numbers... Took my first dose with breakfast and I am SO TIRED and my first after meal reading of the day was 64...

And I'm on a very low dose.

    Anyone have similar reactions?

Right?! 2 1/2 hours seems so extreme!! It is super hilly where I live so it's a work out!! I would go to the gym but I hate the way people look at me with my huge bump
  • Went to my appointment today with the doc!  Of course after my dietitian called them last week and told them to call ME with what they decided...they never did.  He is putting me on a pill for my fasting!  I start tonight so hoping for better results next week!

And as a side note...my blood pressure is getting higher!  Yay!  So they are having me come weekly now and start the non stress tests early.
    image

  • I'm happy to say that after 6 weeks of experimenting with diet and insulin 40 cc at night and 6 in the morning seems to be working magic!

Three days in a row of fasting under 90 AND even better, I've been able to keep my 1 hour blood sugar under 120, even when I eat fruit or potatoes!

It's taken time but I'm very happy. And I have an appointment with a new dietician tomorrow!
  • @ChrissyLady1115, what dose are you on? I'm on 2.5 mg at bedtime and some mornings my numbers are in the low 70s. I'm tired, but that could be the lack of sleep . . .
