Wait am I the only one that testing two hours after a meal? Is everyone else doing one hour? I'll have to double check with my doc. I could have sworn they told me two hours at the diabetes clinic.
My dietician also said to test 2 hrs after first bite, but I usually do it in the middle. If I start eating at 6:20 and end at 6:40 I would test at 8:30.
So what is considered "normal"? Some of you say you need to be under 130. Some are to test one hour or two hours after a meal. I'm supposed to be under 120 two hours post meal. I think my highest fasting so far has been 97 and my highest after meal was 151 and I really misbehaved as I was starving and wanted a yummy breakfast. I've had sweets thrown in with a meal and tested under 100 but have had whole wheat toast with peanut butter and tested at 109. I know that can depend on activity level. I think in the 2 weeks I've been doing sugar testing I've had 6 or 7 out of range with only 3 of those being above 130. I'm worried they will tell me I'm doing a bad job and I already feel like I'm starving half the time. But if some of you have a limit of 130 should I really be that concerned? As of now I'm not on insulin.
@whitemn04 I did a little light reading again night and I came to this consensus.... There is a range that all endocrinologist use but they tailors it to there personal preference. It seemed like in terms of fasting numbers under 100 is okay but some doctors will medicate if the number is over 95. It seemed like 90 was preferred. Testing after one hour 130 was okay but 120 preferred and anything under 120 was good for two hour testing. My mom and I always joke that they call it a practice for a reason and this week they are practicing their theory in us
@LLynde5 thanks! It's just so frustrating to have so many variances. I think I've done pretty well for the most part but we are pregnant and hungry and sometimes a crappy bland meal just isn't going to cut it. I should just be thankful I can still have some of the things I really enjoy like bread and potatoes and still test ok. I feel for you ladies that can't even look at a carb without sending your sugars soaring! But, at least we are struggling together
It's all of these variations that are so frustrating to me! It seems like my OB/NP is on the liberal side of the spectrum. They don't mind if you have a few high numbers as long as you know why it's happening (if I get a high number I usually know why that is). They also don't mind if you have numbers that are just slightly higher as long as it's not too often (one time my fasting was at 96 but generally it's in the 80s) and they continually tell me that I can have the birth that I want even with GD.
Which makes me wonder if your Drs are making you (or suggesting) early induction? My Husbands cousin who is a labor nurse was telling my MIL that I was going to have to be induced by 39 weeks because of my GD. When I first got diagnosed this was my first question and my NP told me they only consider interventions like that if you have to go on insulin (which I don't have to) so no I won't have to be induced. It just kind of irked me when she said that to my MIL.
At 33 weeks, I just found out this morning that I failed my 3 hour glucose test. Looks like I'll be joining you ladies. I'm completely shocked as in the past, doctors have always commented on how great my numbers are and I just assumed baby #4 would be similar. How could I go from amazing numbers to failing? But, I guess each baby is different, right? I don't handle needles well and I'm completely freaked out over the thought of having to prick myself throughout the day. The diet change will be rough I'm sure, but I'm ok with it as long as it helps. Really hoping I don't have to deal with insulin. The doctor's office is working to set up my class now so I don't really know what to expect at this point.
Married to J since 5/05, Mommy to T (10/08), L (08/10) and C (02/13) who was born at home.

It's not the worst, i hate needles too:(. But you can do it!!
Just found out today via a phone call from my doctor's office that I have GB.... so bummed ... I'm 29w4d today and going to see the OBGYN tonight for my regular checkup and prenatal specialist tomorrow to discuss the results. Does the doc office provide the finger stick supplies usually or do you need to contact a medical supply distributor? Any tips?

My meter came from the diabetes clinic where I took my class but the doctor called in a meter, strips and lancets to the pharmacy as well. So I have 2 meters. My insurance covered the meter 100% and the lancets were only $3 but the strips were $40! I get my supplies from my local Walgreens.
Yes! The strips were way expensive at the pharmacy! When I met with the dietitian they gave me the meter and it came with a few test strips and lancets. They put in an order at the pharmacy for more supplies to get me through the end of the pregnancy. They picked my monitor based on what insurance company I had.

I was not as lucky as others. My monitor was given to me at my endocrinologist but my test strips were 95.00 and lancets 16.00 (200 count of each) . We called our insurance company and that was about their average price. Without insurance the brand I am using was 360.00 for just the strips so I guess I am still grateful....
I was put on Metformin yesterday to hold meover till next week when I see the high risk ob for insulin. Had to call the doc this morning after spending the whole night throwing up. They want me to keep taking it and see if the symptoms get better. So far no throwing up but feel really sick and kind of stoned. My numbers are still very high, around 200. Does anyone know if metformin takes a few days to work or is it supposed to be instant.
Went for a growth ultra sound today.. so far so good. I'm 32w2d and baby is measuring 32w4d and I believe 4.6 lbs. The doctor was happy with my numbers. I only had one high fast that she circled, but was able to tell her why I thought it was high and she was fine with it. Said so far so good. Felt good to know that I was doing a good job with my numbers and that so far the only extra thing schedule is another ultra sound in 4 weeks. However the baby is breached I knew I was in trouble when I found out this one was a girl.

Geeez....I get mine all for free, but even when I run out I pay like 30 bucks for 50. Foracare, see if you can't switch.
I pay nothing. If it was that expensive I dunno if I could find the spare change for it.
Someone earlier mentioned the Atkins diet, how is it working for you? Anyone else tried it? Any deets would be helpful
I would probably shy away from the Atkins diet unless is was doctor recommended because the baby needs carbs too. Carbs are brain food and with the addition of baby brain I would be mentally fatigued. I think the big thing with GD is swapping out refined carbs for complex carbohydrates and finding carbs that keep you level when paired with protein. Last night I had pork, sauerkraut, apple sauce and corn on the cob. I was stuffed!! It was 52 carbs and my BGL was 95 before and after dinner. But if I had a piece of bread instead of even whole wheat instead of one of my carbs I would have spiked:( #imissbreadalot
So I had 2 eggs and an eggo this morning, then I fell asleep, because I have been up since 4 thanks to my 3 year old. And wow, spiked to 155 cause I was sleeping. That's stupid....

The Atkins diet is very low-carb, but you're counting "net carbs" vs total carbs. So you count total carbs minus fiber. They have a plan called "Atkins 40" that gives you more net carbs per day (usually it's 20), but I agree with PP to avoid it unless your doctor recommends it. Atkins doesn't allow fruit or starchy vegetables irvwge grains, which may be fine for you.
I've found I'm able to eat fruit, sometimes a small amount of gluten-free granola, sweet potato fries even. But bread of any kind spikes me.
Rather than trying to cut carbs, I'd focus on making sure you get enough protein and identifying which carbs spike your sugars, if any.
Thanks @LLynde5. I get the same results @FrozenMommy. So what if I'm tired and need a nap? Or in my case I sleep in on my days off, that is like 3 points up from my fasting number. Unbelievable
I just had my doctor's appointment this morning and he is giving me one more week to get my fasting levels down. If not down by next Thursday then he's giving me a pill to take with dinner meals.
DO NOT CUT CARBS OUT (unless Dr. advised)! There's a reason they want you to continue to eat carbs....if you're numbers are high and still eating carbs that should mean your body isn't digesting them properly and you probably need medication. Do Atkins when you're ready to lose baby weight! I did Atkins before in life to lose weight and it was hard to switch to this new diet because on Atkins you subtract the fiber and any sugar alcohols to get the true carb count because in the beginning of the diet you can only have 20 carbs a day.
I have just been eating what I normally eat but I just make sure I have a salad or some type of veggie with every meal to balance everything out. I have been finding if I want ice cream then I have it for snack time in the afternoon. I've had a dilly bar now three days this week and my numbers after dinner have been awesome! I was all worried about going out for Italian for our anniversary but I had chicken Parmesan with Gorgonzola sauce and penne pasta and bread....had a great number after dinner! But I also had a side salad first!
I woke up this morning feeling yucky: a little queasy, weak, started feeling sweaty and clammy as soon as I got out of bed. I knew from what my doct are signs of low blood sugar. Sure enough I checked and it was 69. So I had some granola with milk, strawberries, and bacon, along with some coffee. One hour after that, my blood sugar is 141.
I'm guessing I overdid the carbs with breakfast (2 servings of granola instead of 1).
I just don't get why my numbers continue to be all over the place. My fasting numbers have been pretty good since I went on glyburide, but if I so much as think about anything with wheat in it (bread, animal crackers, goldfish crackers), it spikes my sugar.
I'm trying really hard to keep my blood sugar stable but it's either too low or too high, not where it should be. And as a result, I feel like crap.
I sorry you are not feeling well:( I have resigned to the fact that my body really does hate me!! Lol. My number have been wacky this weekend, I was told stress can make them worse. Which made me laugh because I feel like all moms to be have a decent amount of stress as your due date nears!! Less than 9 weeks to go!!
Meh...I have given up wondering why...My fasting was 103 this morning, 119 yesterday, who the F knows why. Meals continue to be weird too. Pasta helper with turkey sausage the other night and 59 2 hours later...sure. I mean I did go to my kids school and walked around, but that's LOW even for 2 hours. Today is my shower, and yep, I'm eating what I want and not giving a you know what.
curious....For those with good fasting numbers are you checking as soon as you wake up or maybe you're up for a little but then wait until before you eat breakfast? Just curious as I overslept this morning and didn't take until 9...usually take at 7....and was at 88!
I have know come to terms that the baby will be a September baby. No way around it due to GD. Buy I don't wanna part way with this board. And I have yet to tell my extended family.
@jenspeake, I usually check pretty soon after I get up. Sometimes I have to tend to DS first (change his diaper, let him out of his room, get him a cup of milk), but I usually check within 15-20 minutes of getting up.
Then, depending on whether or not I have to take DH to work, I'll have breakfast sometime in the next 30-45 minutes.

With my history of pre-e and October 6 due date, I knew a September baby was a possibility for me anyway. But now with GD it's almost a certainty. But I'm not leaving O15 either! This has been my community since shortly after I found out I was pregnant. :-)

Agreed! My induction date is 9/11. I'm still sticking around here
Hey ladies I was just wondering if anyone has had a shift in their numbers. My have all gone up (elevated only a few high) and I am eating the same thing that were fine a week prior. I am almost 32 weeks and I know your hormone are constantly changing but I keep losing weight too. I don't have an appointment until Monday and decided not to call in yet because I haven't had three consecutive high numbers(which is when my doctor told me to call)

As you progress further and further int he pregnancy I believe you produce more insulin which can make your blood sugar go up? (Could be the reverse though I forget) so some foods that you were able to eat fine before you might not be able to or you will notice that your numbers are higher post meals. Just another wonderful aspect of GD
I actually just noticed a shift this week, too. My fasting numbers were within range on glyburide all last week, but now they're back in the low 90s. My post-meal numbers are higher, too. Sometimes I can pinpoint that I had too many carbs at the last meal, but even when I'm eating really low-carb/high protein, there's a slight shift upwards. Just in the last couple days, but still.
In the last two weeks, I've lost a lb, as after I started the GD diet I lost a lb and haven't gained it back. Before that, my weight was escalating quickly, but whether it was the GD or my eating habits I don't know.
