I'm copying and pasting one of my threads to add to this newbie board (and it will bump!)
Things I learned month one:
I had my mirena removed at the end of July with the hopes of TTC starting in August. I was not successful this month but I learned a ton from these boards and hours of research, and felt the need to share with newbies!
Here's some major learning points:
*do not symptom spot, you will drive yourself CRAZY! Every bit of nausea or heartburn, I ran to my phone to log. My search bar was filled with things such as, "10dpo and heartburn". Don't do it.
*one woman's experience will NOT necessarily be yours. I can't even tell you the countless times I researched "TTC after mirena removal." Every body is different. Your body will take time to adjust. Do not assume that everything will "go back to normal" once off birth control.
*make sure to tell your SO how much you love them. Trust me, they are feeling the pressure just as much as you. My bf was sad when I got AF this morning, like HE failed. You guys are in this together!
*do not waste money on expensive pregnancy tests. I threw a lot of $$ down the drain this month because I wanted to try every band (you know, just in case). I'll be sticking to dollar store next time!
*please use the search function on this site. 99% of my questions were answered without ever having to create a post.
*do not count your chickens before they hatch. We would go yardsaling a lot and I was tempted to buy cheap baby stuff (high chairs, cribs, etc). I would have been GREATLY disappointed if I had.
*contribute to the WTO and TWW boards - it's comforting to have a support system

Birth control pills prevent pregnancy through several mechanisms, mainly by stopping ovulation. If no egg is released, there is nothing to be fertilized by sperm, and the woman cannot get pregnant. Most birth control pills contain synthetic forms of two female hormones: estrogen and progestin. These synthetic hormones stabilize a woman's natural hormone levels, and prevent estrogen from peaking mid-cycle. Without the estrogen bump, the pituitary gland does not release other hormones that normally cause the ovaries to release mature eggs.
Specifically, synthetic estrogen in the pill works to:
Stop the pituitary gland from producing follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in order to prevent ovulation.
Support the uterine lining (endometrium) to prevent breakthrough bleeding mid-cycle.
Meanwhile, synthetic progestin works to:
Stop the pituitary gland from producing LH in order to prevent egg release.
Make the uterine lining inhospitable to a fertilized egg.
Partially limit the sperm's ability to fertilize the egg.
Thicken the cervical mucus to hinder sperm movement (although this effect may not be key to preventing pregnancy).
Birth control pills traditionally come in packs of 21 or 28 pills. Both types of packs contain 21 active pills. The seven extra pills in the 28-pill pack are placebo pills which are there to remind you to continue taking one pill everyday and to remind you when to begin the next pack. Whether you take placebo pills or simply wait 7 days to start the next pack, the 7-day break from hormones triggers monthly bleeding that mimics a woman's menstrual period.
In summary:
-If you are on birth control, you are probably not ovulating.
-If you are on birth control, you get a "period" every 28 days because your body is withdrawing from synthetic hormones, not because you ovulated on day 14 every month.
-You therefore do not have a "regular, 28 day cycle" on birth control. You have a synthetically induced 28 day cycle. Your cycle may be longer, shorter, or the same when you come off of birth control, because your body's hormones are no longer being suppressed by the hormones in the pill, and therefore your body is making its own hormones on its own schedule.
