Today is the day I lost my cool:( I knew I was hungry but nothing sounds good at all or ever anymore. I am so sick of eating, counting and testing. My husband keep asking what I wanted to eat and all I can do is cry. I am going to attempt a Pinterest dish for dinner but I don't think I can do this for 69 more days. #sofrustrated

I'm in the same boat as you. I inspect my meals worse than when I was counting calories and exercising. I'm afraid of food.
Like many have said, yesterday's breakfast worked, today it didn't. All nuts are 1 carb, how can they suggest I pair it with something else for snack time if I have no more carb room?
If I could, I would just curl up and cry all day. The frustration is worse when I go to work, cuz I can't concentrate without thinking in carb counts.
6 more weeks if this gets worse, or 7 if he is striving and can hang in there.

  • GUYS. trader joes has this pickled flavored popcorn. 2 CUPS is only 15g of carbs. Best.snack.evar!
  • Mmm pickle popcorn. I get this popcorn Indiana cheese jalapeno stuff. Flavor is great, but they have some really hard kernels in there.

  • @LLynde5 and @saveinsincity, I can relate to your frustration. I'm either second-guessing every bite I take or feeling guilty because I ate something that spiked my sugars (often without knowing it would - those sugar-free wafer cookies are not low-carb!). I'm tired of eggs for breakfast and I keep finding foods I can't have that I want. I just want some waffles!

I've been on a low-carb diet before to lose weight, and I've tried going gluten-free, but I've never had to constantly worry that my food choices would hurt my baby.

This season won't last forever though, even though the next several weeks FEEL like forever.

  • Quick update to how my day ended...my Pinterest lasagna made with zucchini tasted fine but it never set up:(. We did get the house cleaned and worked on the nursery and finally my husband went out and found some carb smart ice cream to brighten my mood! It has 10 carbs per serving so I had two serving which is a whole cup and more than I would normally scoop. It was amazing!! Now I am praying my morning number is decent :D
  • I'm nervous I'm not eating enough out of fear of high blood sugar level. I LOST a pound and a half this week. I started my pregnancy overweight at 178 and i'm only 5'3. I've only gained between 7-9 pounds for the entire pregnancy. My doctor has not been concerned because the baby is growing right on track but that was BEFORE my GD diagnosis. I haven't seen the doctor since I started checking my sugar levels. I will see her this Thursday. How are you ladies doing with weight gain on the GD diet?
    image
  • Lost 6 lbs minimum. I will know on Friday how baby is growing along, despite my weight lost.

So yesterday was a day I stayed under the marks, however at 330a I woke up sweaty as if I was burning up. I checked my sugar and it was 100. I went back to sleep and when I woke up at 645a, it was reading 113. WTheck? I fear good days. I nearly fainted, and that is taking insulin before bed. Snack or no snack this is an epic fail every other day

  • @MirandaC1984,

I started out 188 (I'm 5'2"). I've gained 21 lbs overall and I'll be 33 weeks tomorrow. I've actually lost a pound or two in the last week since starting my GD diet. I'm guessing since I'm no longer consuming as much sugar or starch that my body may have burned off some extra fat, or even just shed some extra fluid.
I eat as much or as little as I need to to not be hungry. In fact, in eating more now than I was before!
I wouldn't worry about any weight loss as long as baby is growing, but check with your doctor.

  • I was overweight to begin with but have only gained 8 pounds.  Doc said it wasn't a concern right now....baby was measuring about right on track with my last appointment.  I am however fed up with my dietitian.  I emailed her last week asking for help on my fasting numbers as I cannot get them on track.  She never responded.  I called out there because they never scheduled a follow up so they sent me to her voicemail.  She just leaves a message on my work phone saying to please make a follow up appointment.  And then today replies to my email with the same thing....and no advice.   GRRRR!

  • I went back to my midwife this morning to go over my numbers over the past week and she was unhappy-enough with my fasting numbers that she put me on gylburide (the oral medication). She feels this will take care of my slightly elevated fasting numbers (gen. around 99-105) without me needing insulin, since my post-meal numbers are good.

She warned that gylburide may drop my blood sugar too low occasionally, in which case I should have CANDY on hand to bring it back up quickly.

I'm trying to stay positive and I want this to work, but I'm also getting really frustrated :(
  • Lesson learned.. fruit at night does not work for me :(
  • I am meeting with my dietitian in 30 minutes. My endocrinologist and OB were pleased with my numbers. My OB isn't happy that I lost a few pounds, she fears it is muscle loss and isn't sure why I was told to eat 225 carbs. She is waiting to hear what the dietitian say and is going to consult with the endocrinologist if my blood sugar stays steady but weight loss continues. She wants me to stick with the plan for two more weeks before she intervenes. The baby on the other hand is still measuring two weeks ahead, has a good heart beat and has been very active:)
  • And I'm back! The dietitian was great, I think I got all of my questions answered. She is allowing me more protein (thank God). She wants my carbs around 180, she said I can add an extra snack if I am hungry at times (yay). She liked most of my food choices. I wish I could have videoed her for you all to listen too. I feel a lot better about this at the moment :D
  • Well today i had a small dish of frozen yogurt today and my BG was 115! However then I ate dinner shortly after and it was 164. Ah well. It was the first time I had frozen yogurt since being diagnosed with GD. Worth it.
  • Im totally with all of you. One minute I'm like 50 more days I can do this then all of a sudden I'm like ahhhhhh!!!! I just have to keep reminding myself it's all for the little one. We can do it ladies!
  • Below is what me dietician finally emailed me back!

If you find you have restricted the foods eaten to control glucoses, ketones might be small or moderate.  A two carb choice snack at night could be small bowl of cereal and milk or 1/2 sandwich and 8 ounce of milk.  Include at least an ounce of protein with the evening snack.  General pregnancy guidelines might include a 1/2 hour walk in the evening after dinner.  If slight adjustments don't help,  have the women's health office review the glucose.

Glyburide is a medication that helps the pancreas produce insulin and lower the glucose.  They might prescribe a medication with a review of your glucoses.

  • I totally had a meltdown at breakfast this morning. I'm so sick of this meal plan and finger sticks already and I'm not even quite 30 weeks yet. It's going to be a long 10 weeks.
    image
  • Well....tried the cereal and milk last night and had one of my worst fasting numbers yet!  Going to try adding in this thirty minute walk tomorrow.  But tonight is our wedding anniversary and I'm having a ton of Italian pasta!!!  And tiramisu!

  • @jenspeake, that's the WORST advice I have ever heard, milk is terrible for your numbers.

You know what I am eating right now, 3 sausage links, 2 eggs, and an eggo with butter. You know why? Insulin...You know why else, cause I am SICK of hearing the words strict, diet, and NO. I don't get why starvation has to be a thing just because of some high numbers.

  • Anyone have breakfast recommendations that work for them that DONT include eggs? I absolutely hate eggs. I've been eating them because it works but I'd love some other options. Pretty much everything from my diabetes class includes eggs one way or another.
    image
  • @FrozenMommy, I'm thinking milk might affect some of us differently than others. I'm not a big milk drinker, but I've put some in my coffee here and there and I eat pudding and cheese without issue. Bread is my downfall. Might not be the case for everyone though.

@AshleyEH1, I just started on glyburide, too, as I had similar fasting numbers to yours. I was also able to control post-meal numbers by eating plenty of protein and avoiding bread. At least we don't have to give ourselves shots on top of the finger pricks!

Hang in there, ladies! I know 10 weeks feels like 10 years when you're having to think about every bite you take, but it'll be over soon!

    a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Parenting Tips"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt1c2dc3.aspx" alt=" Pregnancy Ticker" border="0"  /></a>
  • I have been swearing by a Greek yogurt and granola for my bedtime snack. My numbers have been steadily going down. I was in the 90s, then 80s and today I got 64, which was too low. I felt like crap when I got up. Try yogurt. It's worth a shot. Dairy like Greek yogurt and ice cream (didn't work for me) is supposed to help with fasting numbers
  • Have any of you ladies had bariatric surgery? I had a vertical sleeve gastrectomy last September. I failed my 1 hour and just threw up the 3 hour so now they will be treating me as a diabetic. My meal plans since surgery have always been high protein and low carb so I'm not sure how much my diet will actually change. My meals are no more than 3/4 of a cup as far as volume goes so I'm wondering if that will have an impact too...

Yes! I have cottage cheese with fruit or yogurt topped with a 1/4c granola. Both work for me. My dietitian said some people can not handle carbs in the morning so I try to keep my morning carbs under 25g. And bump up my am snack to 20-25g. I feel better and this is what allows me the extra snack! Her big thing was steady numbers throughout the day and eating more frequently has helped that a ton!
  • For me, bread, cereal, milk and Greek yogurt does not work.

So far 1 scrambled egg, 1 corn tortilla, 1 slice of cheese and either bologna or salami is my go to breakfast.

Thank you!! I will have to give it a try. That is way more my speed than the bacon and eggs I've been forcing down every day.

  • Just had my visit with GD specialist yesterday. Started testing and yesterday's numbers were great! Was feeling very good about where I was headed. Today, not so much:( Started with a high fasting and continued with a high 2 hr. I know it will take some time to get used to which foods affect me, but I'm already feeling discouraged. Hoping this day turns around this afternoon.
  • It is weird how different things affect us all.  I eat bread all the time and have great numbers.  I actually used almond milk last night with my cereal as I'm not a milk drinker so tried that for the first time with some cheerios.  Not too shabby.

@MirandaC1984  For breakfast I'll just have a slice or two of toast with peanut butter.  Some days I'll substitute one piece of toast for a hard boiled egg or just a little bit of fruit.  Or instead of toast I'll have a plain blueberry waffle.  I tried a half a bagel and cream cheese over the weekend....that did not work for me!  I'm thinking I just picked the larger side of the bagel ;)

  • I have been having 2 sausage patties topped with melted cheese. I'm allergic to eggs.

So far toast and PB or toast and cheese has not worked for me, and neither has any Greek yogurt or cereal. Only a zero carb breakfast. I can have some carbs later in the day but my morning numbers become too high with any carbs at breakfast.
  • @mamaowl15, no I mean straight milk. For whatever reason, I can have yogurt, ice cream, whatever else dairy, but not straight up milk, and especially not with cereal. All cereals seem to be a no no even for like lunch. I tried oatmeal granola with milk, 170 after.

  • Pure Protein or Think Thin bars are a decent breakfast as well. They are sugar alcohols instead of sugar, and 20 g protein. If I am not feeling like cooking eggs, I will eat one of those, then greek yogurt and fruit at snack. Lunch I usually have either left overs from the night before or a sandwich. Dinner tonight is spaghetti. But then again, these are things I wouldn't be eating if still on glyburide.

I have a question for all of you as well. Did your docs ever say at what time to test, first bite or last. I had mine tell me first bite, and I thought, that's F-ing stupid. If my first bite is salad that takes me 10 or so mins to eat, and then I eat my meat, then my carb 25 mins later, I would be testing in my carb peak. They want to insist that it doesn't matter, but I don't see how that can be. If I ate an all protein and veg meal, saving my carb for cake, and ate that 40 mins after dinner started....it just doesn't add up. Sometimes I even wait like 1 hr 15 mins to test, and usually I am under 120.

  • Baby update: went for my 1st NST. Baby was very active. I have been upped on my bedtime insulin and now have to do dinner time as well. I must try to track kick counts and he is still shy that I wasn't able to see his face. Fluid was checked and looks good.
I'm back on Friday for growth check and nutritionist follow up along with 2nd NST.

We can do this ladies, thanks for the support we try to give one another and the vent sessions we have.

At my GD class they told us 2 hours from the time you take your FIRST bite. But I thought HOW STUPID? They tested my sugars at my glucose tolerance test from the time I FINISHED the glucola. So I have been testing from the time I finish a meal.
    image
  • @FrozenMommy my Dr told me to start my 1 hour when I start eating. Just another of the million different variations there are with this damn diet
  • Hmmm....I don't even remember....I've been doing from last bite because that just seemed logical to me....sounds like maybe I'm not following right!  When we go out to dinner tonight it's like an hour at least event at this restaurant!  I wouldn't want to test from the first bite and I'd have to test immediately after my last bite!

I am to test before I eat. And one hour after my last bite. Last few weeks I test only at meals, this week I now test before every meal and alternate testing after a meal and before bed. The only time I am to change that is if my BGL is before 60. Then I am to have a 15 gram snack and test 15 minutes later. It that number is back in range then I can eat as normal. If not, repeat until I am in range but honestly I have only been low once and highly doubt it will happen again!
  • Holy Cow @LLynde5!  How many times are your pricking your fingers a day?  I feel like mine need a rest!  Sometimes I get good blood on the first try but other times I have to prick three different fingers because not enough blood comes out or maybe I didn't get deep enough!   Our poor fingers!

It was 6, now 5. My fingers have lots of little bruises on them:(. I am so sick of it but if I have good numbers after the next two weeks it will go down again!!

I reread my post and it sounds like I implied before every time I eat, but it's was just before and after breakfast, lunch and dinner. (6) Now, for example, today, I tested before breakfast , lunch and dinner and only after lunch. I will have to test one more time before bed. (5). Tomorrow I will test after dinner instead of Lunch. Do you get to test less than this?
  • @jenspeakes @LLynde5
I only test fast, after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner. Total of 4. Unless I feel I'm shaky or sweaty and I must test to ensure I'm above 70

  • Yah see what I mean. If you go out with friends and talk while you eat, you would be testing just after finishing a meal. It's so stupid. I have ALWAYS done after last bite, it just doesn't make sense otherwise.
