Cluster feeding

Why oh why did no one mention cluster feeding in the BF'ing class we took?? At the hospital last night DS (I can't believe I have a DS!!) wanted to nurse for 5 min every 15-30 min from 6 pm till 3 am! I was convinced something was wrong with me, him, or both until the lactation consultant came in and said it was totally normal! We got home at 2 today at he was in a similar mode from 3:30-6:30, though he now seems to be coming off it.

So...PSA for other FTMs - read up on cluster feeding so you aren't freaked out when it happens to you!

  • I called them sucky days. My son would be stuck to me like glue. I used a moby wrap so I could wear babe and still do things .
  • Yup. My first child cluster fed every night for the first 6wks. It would last 4-6hrs straight but then she would sleep for 5-6 glorious hours.

  • I am so happy I'm not working right now.  I sincerely hope cluster feeding is not an issue after 12 weeks...gahhh

  • Nobody warned me about it either and I was paging the nurse at midnight our first night in the hospital because I was sure something was wrong. They're brutal. Luckily DD is a month old and it hasn't happened again. But I'm not holding my breath :|
  • DD is cluster feeding from about 8-11pm every night....
I just keep reminding myself that I'd rather be feeding her than listening to her scream. lol
  • I'm knee deep in it right now. Frustrating but not surprising - still sucks though! I made the mistake of going to target this evening and she wasn't having it. I cried the whole way home.
  • Luckily I only had about a week of this until it went back to a more normal schedule. He still has little phases but they are inconsistent. About killed my nipples!
  • Have had this the past two nights, and all day today. The second night in the hospital we finally rang the nurse at 3am wondering what was wrong and she explained..she also took him and "babysat" for three hours so we could get some rest! She was an angel from heaven, and I miss her very much.
  • My poor nipples! DS cluster feeds and I swear does a little smirk after each session! My breastfeeding class did speak on it, but I forgot and freaked anyway until the LC came in my room.
  • Cluster feeds, growth spurts, teething...oh the joys of babies ;) These are the parts I try not to remember.
