Baby Names

Anyone regret using a popular name?

I have been thinking about Emma a lot more lately... It's such a pretty, girly, classic name to me.

I can't decide if popularity really bothers me that much? I think having a time stamped name bothers me more.

Has anyone regretting using a super popular name with their child? If so, why? Or do you think Emma will be one of those time stamped names? Thanks!

Re: Anyone regret using a popular name?

  • I think Emma is an absolutely beautiful name. It's feminine, it's sweet, it's romantic, it's classic; you can't go wrong. However, I would never, ever, ever give it to my kid because it's popular. That for me is a deal breaker. So what you really need to do is figure out how much that bothers you. Because no matter what anyone else says, it's your choice and you are the one that has to deal with it. There are plenty of people who couldn't care less about everyone else sharing a name. If they love it they love it.

Also want to note that there are so many you-neek and made up names these days that Emmas and Sophias, while popular, are nowhere near the Jennifer and Jessica levels of the 80s. Your Emma won't be alone, but she probably won't be Emma #5 either. Just something else to think about. :)

As for being time stamped, Emma grew in popularity because of Friends, but I know an Emma born before that popularity boom. It's an OLD name; I don't think it will be time stamped.

  • Emma is classic popular not trendy popular I wouldn't worry.

Emery, Ellie, Tinsley/Kinsley, any Addy name, Avery, Riley THOSE are going to be timestamped but I know Emma's of all ages.

  • I have a Sophia an Isabelle and a nora and no I don't regret giving them common names.
  • Emma is classic and lovely.
You really can't go wrong with classic and lovely.
  • Emma is a very pretty name. If it is popular now it may not be by the time your child is in school.

  • My son is two and we named him Matthew, and I don't regret giving him a popular name. In fact, he's the only Matthew in his class or in our mommy group. We know two Lincolns, three Avas and four Ellies! (Only one Emma :) ) it seems like, in our city, trendier names are more likely to crop up than classic names. Maybe do an informal survey and see how many Emma's you can find under three?

Even still, if this doesn't bother you, and you like the name the most, I'd use it.
  • Emma will not be timestamped in the way Ashley and Jennifer were.
  • My son is 2 and named William. There's 2 other Williams in his daycare room. I don't care. The name suits him, we like it, and it's a family name

  • It will always be a beautiful name, but I just couldn't deal with my child going to school with 10 Emmas. That is why we chose against Isabel, Lillian and Brianna.
  • There are a couple of names that I didn't pick because I thought they were too popular, and honestly I kind of regret not picking them! I'm pregnant with baby 3 and I'm not going to let that sway me this time!

  • We have an Anthony and Victoria. I've never met another Victoria under age 30, and he's the only Anthony in his preschool. I say classic popular is a million times better than trendy popular.
  • I'm a Samantha born in '92, when the name was ranked in the top 5 I believe, and I really hate it. It's not that I hate my name, it's the fact that I was 1 of like 5 in my graduating class, and I went to a really small high school. It really sucks sharing my name with a ton of other people, and I wish my parents had done a little research and picked something that was a little more unique and special.
  • I love the name Emma even though it is really popular. It's been around forever. If you really want to use it, you should! Maybe you could give her a more unique middle name so she could fall back on that if she wanted to.
  • I don't think there is anything wrong with a "popular" name. Our oldest has a top 10 name. We considered 2 top ten names for our youngest. We just went with a different name that fit him better.

I think Emma is a classic name.

  • I have a 3 year old Emma & I don't regret a second of giving her that name. The popularity doesn't bother me because its a beautiful name & I couldn't imagine her as anything else. If you like it go for it!
  • Classic popular and trendy popular are totally different. Time tested names such as Emma, Grace, Norah, Olivia, Jacob, William, Henry etc are lovely suitable names. Kids don't need the most unique or creative names to be who they are.
  • I have a really popular 80s name and I can only remember one time having another in my class. We actually ended up being great friends because we shared a name so it wasn't all bad.

I am a product of the 80s and I know one Jessica, one Ashley, and no Jennifers. So I think it's fine. Popularity may also depend on your location.

Emma is popular but not trendy.

  • We named our son Noah when it was ranked number 12 on the SS list. We picked it because we loved it and the second he was born we new it was the perfect name for him. To this day it fits him perfectly.

His first year in preschool there were not any other Noahs in his school. The second year there were three in his class. This year he is in kindergarten and there isn't another Noah in his grade. Just because it is a popular name, doesn't necessarily mean it is popular where you live or that she will be one of many in her class.

The only Emma I even know of is 12 years old and I know at least half a dozen Hazels all under 5.

I say that if you love a name, use it. Yes there will be a chance that there will be another one in her class, but these days, you really never know.
