Re: Guilty Pleasure Names

  • We picked Lux for a girl and then realized what it rhymes with :(. Now we can't agree. I LOVE Aria but it's so popular. I also love Indigo and Clover. He hates these all.
One of the baby girls on my first BMB is Lux. It's so so adorable and it fits her well. Honestly in 2 years it never even occurred to me that it rhymed with that.

I just had to list all sorts of offensive words in my head until I found one that rhymed; it never would have come to me otherwise!
  • I really liked the name Xander for a boy but DH vetoed it immediately.

Also Maude for a girl, a family name, and Annabelle. DH says Maude is not girly enough and annabelle reminds him of some cartoon cow from when he was a kid.

Oh well, we have our names picked for either gender, our girl name is actually a guilty name for me because I first heard it when a friend named their child it! (I figure we live a bit away and their daughter is 5 now so not so bad to use it again right?! or at least i keep telling myself..)

I used to love the name Remy, but once I got into GOT I immediately struck it from my list. H would've vetoed it anyway.
Speaking of GOT, I hear names like Kahleesi, Daenerys and Arya are getting popular because of the show. I wonder how the kids would feel about being named after a tv show when they grow up. It's not like those are common names that gained popularity because of the show. These are completely fictional names that were made up by Mr. Martin himself.

if you spell Arya as Aria it would be a term in opera...but also another fictional name from Pretty Little Liars..

Aria is also on my name list but I doubt we'll use it because it doesn't flow well with the middle name we have picked out.

I was named after a TV character from a popular 80s show and it has never affected or bothered me. I mean, by time I was old enough to understand, the show was off the air and not something I'd have been interested in at that age anyway. Now, it's so far removed from me that if I were to watch it now, it would just be like "oh, we have the same name"
@funkypineapple I am just curious (and you don't have to answer if you aren't comfortable). Would people know instantly which show/ character you were named after, once you hear the name? or is it a name (common or not) like, something most people would identify as a name of a real person, and you wouldn't necessarily know that it's after a character unless they were told. I just wonder because I think those are two different situations.
One of my friend is named Scarlett, because her mom loved the movie Gone with the Wind, but until she told me why her name was Scarlett, I didn't think she was named after anyone specific. Whereas if I meet someone name Khaleesi, I know exactly where that came from.

Good point. I would definitely know what Khaleesi or Sookie were inspired by but something like Aria or Lorelai? I would have inklings but to me those are much more common and I wouldn't know for sure.  I know nobody/few people my age would know unless I told them so I think it just depends? The show the character I was named after was on Dynasty and that show ran the entire length of the '80s.

  • It's so hard to find a boys name that we both like and we don't want to use a popular or trendy name. My name's that I love but my DH has vetoed are Axl and Cobain (I love music
  • I agree Aria is really pretty!! I love the name Tucker for a boy but it reminds me of Tucker Max and he's a huge scumbag. I also loooooove the name Olive but hubs said it made him thing of Olive oil. Boo.

  • My baby daddy at once didn't want James but then I reminded him that it was the grandfathers name... And now we are think Tiego James St Jean D S.
I really like River and Celia for a girl, but was vetoed... As well as Layla and Lilly.
I am trying to find an interesting version of Mary, my sisters name is Marie, my middle name is Mairead and my Grandmother as well as BF are Mary. Research books here I come!
  • Blush and Halo... my husband says they are stripper names.. but I think they are original and cute!!!
  • Agree! Definitely won't do it!
  • Tallulah!! I have been wanting this name even with my first but had a baby boy- now pregnant again and dad still rejecting it!
  • @krabs Love Cosima! I like the original Italian pronunciation but DH is a big Orphan Black fan and insists it's ko-SEE-muh which sounds weird to me lol. Finally we both like a name but can't agree how to pronounce it!

  • Lurker from NOV15 - I love this tread!

For girls, I like old names like Rose, Ruth, Maude, Olive, Ada, Esme and on the other end of the spectrum Ariel, Autumn and Summer.

I really wanted to call my son Orlando, but we settled for Elliot.

  • 5th generation navy. I really wanted to name our baby Sailor. Boy or girl. Hubs said its a dog name not a human name. We have had several names picked out over our years of infertility, and all of them have been stolen by family and friends.
  • We have our names picked out but I've always loved Jamison for a girl, with the nickname Jamie. And I used to think Kota or Koda would be a cool boys name until my friend named his dog Dakota and calls him Kota.
I will say the names we did choose I like better so it worked out well
  • I've always loved names like ,winter willow ,heaven ,lyric ,but we are not cool enough to pull them off lol

Whhaaaa? Is Lux a real name? Where the heck have I been? I've known people named Luz, but never heard Lux. Now I want to steal it--if only for a little while--for my GPN! Who gives a luck what it rhymes with? ;)
