Caffeine

I know this has been discussed before. I wanted to make a poll but it won't let me on my phone. Who competely gave caffeine up? Cut down? Didn't give up?

Just once I would like to enjoy a whole cup of coffee without feeling guilty like I'm giving my kid crack! These little sips here and there aren't cutting it lately :/

Re: Caffeine

  • I still have 1 a day...granted I take my coffee weak but it's my little ray of sunshine to start my day.

  • I cut back from 2-3 cups/day to 1 cup/day. I don't even always finish my 1 cup/day because coffee just doesn't taste as good to me as it used to. But I do feel like I need at least a little every day to get through the work day.
  • I havent been drinking coffee at all. However, I have been having soft drinks every once in awhile depending on how I feel. Sometimes the carbonation doesnt sit well.

  • I have almost completely cut caffeine out. I think I've had 1 Dr. Pepper in the last 6 weeks since I stopped drinking coffee.

  • I've majorly cut down on my caffeine. I used to have at least 1 cup a day of either coffee or tea. Now I have a cup of coffee maybe once a week? I'll get chai every couple weeks. Last week I had a lot of iced tea because of the heat, but my consumption is definitely down. I'm not a big soda drinker so never really worry about that sort of drink.

  • I have pretty much completely given it up. I have one soda every couple weeks when I'm really dragging. I have started drinking a lot of tea decaf herbal stuff instead.
  • I use to drink coffee everyday. When I first found out I was pregnant, I cut down to one small cup a day. However, as soon as the ms started, I haven't been able to drink it. However, I have had a few cups of pop, which I never drank before, because it helps with the sickness. I don't drink it everyday and if I do, its one cup or less. I miss the coffee, even though, at the same time, the sound of it makes me sick.

  • I've cut down to no coffee, but soft drinks every now and then, when I get that major craving for the carbonation!

  • I still have 1 cup almost everyday - with my last pregnancy I cut it out completely but had horrible withdrawl headaches and I chose not to go through that this time. I don't always drink the full cup but I drink enough to avoid the headaches for sure.

The only soda I drink is non-caffeinated though - 7-up, sprite, root beer, or ginger ale but that's mainly because I drank diet soda before pregnancy and I know it's really bad for you in general, but even worse for the babe I believe.

  • I drink a cup of half- caf in the morning.  I was trying to to drink any at all, but the headaches were awful.  I really can't wait to have a vanilla latte in Feb!
  • I have cut back slightly... I usually have 2 cups of coffee in the mornings but intended on cutting back to just one during the first trimester, which wasnt hard because I didnt even want the second cup. I have just recently began to crave a good, crisp fountain coke and have had a few over the last 2-3 weeks. I honestly dont worry about it much because I drink my fair share of water through out the day(60-80 ounces daily). We dont buy cokes (or anything like it) for our house and mainly stick to water, milk or sweet tea (which I really havnt wanted either) Pretty much, if I really really want it, I will have it.. in moderation. :)

  • When we were TTC, I cut down quite a bit. With the BFP, I cut it out completely. My MW recommends no caffeine at all during first tri (if you can swing it) then under the 200mg/day the remainder. Last time, I had two cups a week or so when I was in 3rd tri, not sleeping, and dragging at work.

  • I cut back in the sense that I am not drinking unsweet ice tea throughout the day. I still drink 1 cup of large coffee in the morning and on certain days I will drink some ice tea here and there. But I also don't eat any chocolate or other items with caffeine.

  • I switched to 1 cup of half-caff in the morning instead of my regular 1-2 cups, and I typically have an iced tea or half a regular coke in the afternoon if I start dragging at work. My doc wasn't worried about it one bit (more convincingly: neither was my MIL who's an OB APRN and has been awfully judgey about my food choices!)

  • I still have a 12oz vanilla iced latte every day (non-starbucks, local coffee shop).  I read that the caffeine content in an iced latte is less than a cup of coffee, so I feel fine about it.  Also, if this baby belongs to my husband, which I'm 100% sure it does, it will have no problem with coffee.  :)

Baby's heartbeat seems fine and my doctor said she's cool with it.  It's the small joys sometimes.

  • I completely gave it up. If I want a soft drink, I will have sprite, 7 up for Ginger ale. I really only drink water and almond/ cashew milk!

  • I cut down. I've never been able to fully get away from it. I will say that my one a day that I allow myself seems to be more like 1 a week so I'm pretty proud of myself.

  • I cut caffeine out completely around weeks 6 through 9, when I was feeling really sick and having spotting issues.  I now have one cup of coffee per day, and I may occasionally add an iced tea.  Coffee has kept me pretty regular, which I definitely appreciate!
  • I've gone pretty extreme and have cut out caffeine altogether, including chocolate.

I was never a coffee drinker so that's not an issue and had been trying to break my Dr. Pepper habit anyway. I do miss chocolate very, very much though. But as I think I've mentioned before I'm being very strict in an attempt to help deal with my anxiety. Controlling the controllable and whatnot.

My plan is to reintroduce a little bit of caffeine back into my diet after I'm into the 2nd trimester.

  • For the first 11 weeks, I just cut caffeine down to one small cup of coffee a day. Something crazy happened though and the second I hit week 12, I could no longer tolerate even the smallest amount of caffeine. I would drink a half of a small iced dunkin's coffee and it would leave me crazy jittery and shaky (I think that's only about 15 ml of caffeine!). So, I had to give it up cold turkey. I figured it was a sign that my baby (or maybe my liver) couldn't handle the amount of caffeine I was drinking.
Can't say I don't miss it. It kept me awake at work.
  • I cut back to one soda or coffee a week. I was initially super scared about any caffeine because of DS' brain abnormalities but my OB talked me down from my anxiety.

  • I have given up on coffee completely. I have a coke every once in a while cause I can't live without the carbonation. It hasn't been a problem being on summer break, but school starts again in a few weeks and I know I'm gonna have to at least have one coffee a day or I won't survive till 3 o clock.
  • I really loved coffee before I got pregnant, the taste, the smell, etc.  I would have 2 or 3 cups a day.  Right now though, the smell is revolting and the taste isn't very appealing.  Sometimes I'll get a decaf soy latte from Starbucks because I like the taste and want the protein, but I've stopped drinking coffee completely for probably the last 6 weeks.  I was a big diet coke drinker before getting preggers too, but I've cut that out because of the artificial sweeteners.

All that being said, if coffee becomes appealing to me again during the pregnancy, I'd definitely have a cup a day.  Most doctors will tell you 1-2 cups a day is perfectly fine, especially after the first trimester.

  • I have mostly cut it out---I used to drink several cups of caffeinated tea every day. I think it helps that it is warm outside so I don't want to drink it as badly. But definitely was a change in my morning routine for a while. I still drink the occasional cup of hot tea or iced tea. I have never been big on pop---but have had a coke or two in recent weeks. Sometimes if I have a headache the little bit of caffeine helps it go away. I am trying to stick with water all the time when possible.

  • I was a huge coffee drinker before but coffee happens to be one of my aversions now so I have no problem not drinking it anymore. I still will have tea and iced tea whenever I want (which is maybe twice a week) since it has far less caffeine.
  • I drink may 1.5 cups of coffee in the morning. Sometimes I'll have a Coke.

  • Cut it out. I had one small cup last week at a restaurant and that's all I've had since the bfp which was 6 weeks ago
  • I cut it out completely but was thinking about having a nice chai tea latte for my birthday next week LOL
  • I usually have a small caramel frapp or dr pepper every few days. And only if I've been drinking water prior. I cut it out completely up until about Week 10.
  • I've never been a coffee drinker but I was drinking 1-2 sodas a day pre BFP. I've cut that out completely. Now the only caffeine I get is in my food... Like chocolate! Yum! Lol

  • I've cut down to one cup of coffee in the morning.

  • I have a latte a day. It's under the 200 MG per day that my doctor said to stay under so I'm not feeling bad about it. I honestly wish I could have more though. I'm dragging!
  • I cut it out at the beginning because I was having aversions to it and all hot beverages in general. I am started to feel better now and wanting it more and I am sure by the time the fall comes I will be back to drinking 1-2 cups of coffee or tea a day.

I was a regular coffee/red bull drinker. I cut all caffeine out (with the exception of occasional chocolate) when I found out I was pregnant. I did the same with my first two pregnancies and have extremely healthy children so am trying to be consistent with what I did in those pregnancies. I know doctors say that a limited amount is ok but it's a personal choice to avoid it.

    *edited to fix incomplete sentence!
  • I am a worry wort so I completely give up caffeine for the entire pregnancy.

  • I don't drink coffee but cut out diet coke (more about the chemicals than caffeine) and limit myself to 1 unsweetened iced tea a day.

The iced tea gives me a little boost but I won't have more than one per my dr's recommendation.
