Weight gain

I don't think we've had one of these threads in a while, and honestly I need some reassurance!

So at 30 weeks 2 days I have gained 15kg. .which is 33 lbs :((

Yes, I'm very happy that baby is healthy..but seriously I feel like I've doubled in size this week!

I'm hoping I'm not the only one who has gained this much...? (Come on..reassure me girlies :-S )

Re: Weight gain

  • I'm 29 weeks today, and I've gained about 30 lbs so far ! With my last pregnancy I gained 59 in total !!
  • Loading the player...
  • Yes, I also gained 30lbs by week 30.

I know at least 10-15 are from other factors because I had some changes to my routine that threw me off my normal eating and exercises.
But I know I'm still going to gain another 5-10 before full term, and I really didn't want to get to 40lbs total for the pregnancy. I feel so guilty, but I comfort myself knowing that it's probably better than gaining too little, I think that would make me worry more. My baby is right in the average size, so I know she's doing well, and I will lose the baby weight later.

  • At my last dr apt she told me I am gaining too much weight and I have another tomorrow which I'm really nervous for because I really don't want to hear about it. I'm 29 weeks and have gained about 25lbs. The weird thing is, I honestly don't feel like I've gained that much! I mean obviously my belly is bigger and don't even get me started on my boobs, but the rest of my body doesn't seem THAT different.

I'm having the opposite problem, it took me forever to gain any weight due to bad morning sickness that ended around 15 weeks. I'm 29 weeks on sat an have gained around 12 pounds and baby almost weighs 3lbs. As long as baby is healthy you shouldn't worry, yes it might take a little longer for the weight to come off but I say it took a year to grow baby so give yourself a year to get back to normal.
  • At 30 weeks I've gained 35 lbs! :(( At my appointment yesterday, I've gained 10 in the last month. After I get back from mini Vaca on Monday going to make more of an effort to est healthier for the rest of the pregnancy. I haven't been going crazy on portions but have definitely been eating a lot of crap. @NicoleAndDerrick I agree, I don't feel like I've gained as much as I have!
  • I just went in for my checkup. The brand new midwife told me I have gained almost 20 pounds (I need to check that because I thought I already passed that last checkup) which is a little more than they like to see at 27 weeks (I'll be 28 on Saturday). She said to try to make some changes. I told her I've gained it mostly in my butt and thighs.

I don't know what to do. Yes, I feel I am a bit more chubby than I want to be, but I don't look like a blob either. I am trying to eat as healthy as time and budget are allowing me. And really, on a given night do I spend the time I have to cook a healthy dinner? Or do I exercise? I don't have time for everything.

Why don't doctors and midwives talk about weight by saying you have gained more than they recommend (supposedly based on research for what is healthy) but ALSO say that perhaps it is partly due to a growth spurt of the baby or that you as a mom are gaining early? Why don't they mention those caveats, especially if there is no health concern?

I'm 30 weeks and I've gained 23 lbs. my Drs office says I'm right on track. Although when they measured my fundal height she said that's a good size baby! I'm going to just assume that's because I'm 5'1 and carry outwards [-(
  • I am 30 weeks, and at my 28 week appt I gained a total of 18lbs. And they would like me not to gain anymore weight. I was a bit on the heavier side pre baby but still.... I also said to the doc that you gain the most weight in months 7,8 &9 right?!?! \:D/ so basically I'm still doing what I'm doing and as long as baby is healthy I'm ok.... Lol
  • ive gained 30 lbs by my 26th week . im currently 26 weeks and 6 days and refuse to look at the scale anymore .
  • I have gained 31 pounds and I'm almost 30 weeks ... At first my doctor was telling me I have gained too much weight but my blood pressure is fine and I passed my glucose test so she really doesn't say anything anymore ...

I'm on the opposite end, still struggling to gain rather than lose. I've only gained 4 lbs now, and I constantly worry about if baby is getting enough nutrients (even though I'm good about my intake.. it just comes out pretty often still!). As long as baby is doing good I'm ok though, but its an added worry for sure. Kinda hoping to gain loads in the last few months to make up for it if im honest :P

  • @MelMel92, do you mean you are still unfortunately having nausea and vomiting? :(
  • I'm 28 weeks and 3 days and I've gained 7kg's.
  • At 29 weeks I gained 22lbs and my Dr told me I need to watch it. With my last pregnancy I remember gaining the most weight during my 2nd trimester so I'm hoping that the case again and that it will slow down a little now.
  • naka92naka92 member
@Sballerina Yep! I've pretty much accepted I'll have this the entire pregnancy. I have some good days, but mostly its still a lot of morning sickness. Getting a bit more good days the last few weeks though, so I pack food into me on those days.

  • I am 28 weeks and have also gained 30 pounds. I have an appointment next week and am not looking forward to if my doctor has something to say. I work at my feet everyday and don't eat terribly but I feel like my dr thinks I sit around and eat cheeseburgers and ice cream all day long!!! I am all belly and my mom gained over 60 pounds with all of us :/
  • I am 30 weeks and I've gained 11 pounds so far! Baby is doing very well and weighs around 3 pounds!
  • Just got home from my 28 week appointment, where it was suggested I "try not to gain any more weight this pregnancy." Uhh... yeah, I'm not too optimistic about that. Also, I learned that I've been telling everyone the wrong due date (by 4 days) this entire time. Oops! That's the third baby for you - I clearly wasn't paying close attention...
  • I am almost 27 weeks and I haven't gained at all. I seem to loose between 1 and 3 pounds a week now. My doctor says the baby is measuring good so I guess that's all that really matters. The weirdest part is I haven't had any morning sickness (I had it bad with my previous 4 so don't hate me...lol) and I eat A LOT! Gaining weight while pregnant has always been a struggle for me but I sure can pack the pounds on when I am not pregnant! Definitely have a giant round belly already.

I'm 29 weeks and 22 pounds up, but I gained the bulk of it so quickly (7 pounds over 24 weeks, and the next 15 in 3!) that I earned a bunch of preeclampsia tests. Fortunately, they all came back clean, but... Awkward. I've never even heard of anyone else gaining weight so quickly their doctor thought it could be asymptomatic preeclampsia!
  • I'm 27 weeks and I've gained 14 lbs.....I feel like that's nothing but the baby is healthy and growing so that's good!
  • I'm 30 weeks tomorrow. And have gained about 30lbs. I am tall 5'10", so maybe that makes a difference, but my dr said my weight gain was good last week. However, that was before I was diagnosed with GD. I wonder what the nutritionist will say next week when I meet with her?!?
  • I am 29 weeks and have gained 24 pounds, it doesn't sound that bad but I was 20 pounds overweight to begin with so not feeling too good about it. Dr hasn't mentioned anything though so not being too hard on myself.

One of my most fit friends gains 60 pounds during pregnancy. I don't know where she holds it all, but she loses it very quickly.
  • Oh @MelMel92 :( That sounds rough. I am sorry.
  • I'm almost 28 weeks and have gained 28 lbs. I'm guessing I'll gain about 40 by the end. I gained 50 with my 1st pregnancy and 34 with my 2nd. I've lost it both times fairly easily.
  • Well, I am 26 weeks and gained 26 lbs. First 3 months, I lost 10, so really I have gained 26 lbs in 3 months. Of course being GD and overweight to begin with, now they are concerned. I get a call from the dietitian yesterday, she's calling on behalf of my OB. They want to talk to me about weight control, and am I interested in setting up an appointment with her. I said you know, I met with you 3 months ago, before they put me on insulin, when I was eating all paleo and no carbs, remember. Oh yes...I said look, I am following the "plan" they gave me, eating the damn carbs, and this is what happened. There is nothing new you can tell me that I don't already know. I cannot possibly eat less and be on insulin....Just one more worry to add to my crap pile eh doctors? She also tells me that eating a high protein no-carb diet, will act as a diuretic, so yes totally possible I am retaining water too. But nope, let's blame it all on what I eat, cause I am a fat girl. Sorry for the rant...

Oh ladies, I love you all. It's so strange to be pregnant and gain so much weight in such a short space of time.  Kinda difficult for me to put my 'must lose weight' brain on the shelf for this period of time.

So basically, if doc isn't worried then neither should I?  I'm thinking of starting the gym..just to walk a bit.  I haven't exercised much - because I bled and was on bed rest at the start of my pregnancy which made me worried if I moved too much.

Thank you for all your inputs, we are all doing so amazingly well, I never knew pregnancy was so difficult!!

  • Oh dear, @FrozenMommy! You were doing fine on the paleo and then they had you switch to eating carbs and taking insulin?! Really, people?
  • 28 weeks and 38 gained
  • I feel like no matter what you do it's wrong! First 21 weeks I gained 2 lbs and got yelled at for not gaining, then week 21-26 I gained 11 lbs so got yelled at for gaining so much in short time! I won't be back to dr Til 30 weeks so hoping I achieved a happy medium this time!

@RainbowMama7 yes, yes I feel you.  The guidelines are there just to be that - a guide.  I just looked on the pregnancy weight calculator, and I am way over.

Time to join the gym.  I feel so tired after work that I haven't been the whole pregnancy - but I am going to force myself.

  • 27 weeks today up 32 pounds! Blood pressure is great, no GD and I have not stopped my gym routine at all since getting pregnant ( I go everyday at 4:30am before work). Don't stress love! Do what you can and worry about being a kick ass mom!!!
  • I'll be 31 weeks on Tuesday and I've gained approximately 21-23 lbs. At 5'2" and 188 pre-pregnancy, my BMI was "morbidly obese," but I fit a size 12 and I don't think I looked morbidly obese . . . But anyway. My doctor said I should gain 25-35 lbs overall but my WIC office said 11-20.

Anyway, at my last appointment, I expressed some concern about my weight gain to my doctor, but he was unconcerned. I've gained about 10 lbs in 6 weeks though, so I may be in for a scolding when I go in on Monday. However, I have had a healthy pregnancy so far.

I wouldn't worry about the number on the scale if the doctor isn't, though.

  • I am at 27 weeks 3 days and i have gained 4lbs
  • @roboytoh I am in like the exact position pre weight always lingered between 175-180 looked a little overweight but never obese. Even now I have a cute bump and look proportional for a pregnant lady but still hitting 200 was just depressing !
