Weight gain

  • I am 29 weeks and gained so far 29 lbs. I gained 50 lbs with each of my other pregnancies. My doctor gave me a hard time with both of those, but this time he has not mentioned my weight gain at all. I am worried I won't lose it as easily this time. I had the first two in my twenties, and now I am 35 so it might not come off as fast. I don't really know how to slow it down.. I'm hungry all the time!!

Oh dear, @FrozenMommy! You were doing fine on the paleo and then they had you switch to eating carbs and taking insulin?! Really, people?
    RIGHT?!?!?!?!?

And seriously, over a "few" high sugars. And I mean like 5 in a month. You have no idea what hell this is. They are so strict about sugars, and then I get that under control, and now bitch about my weight. I cannot win.

  • At 28 weeks I had gained 16.5 pounds.  I was about 15-20 pounds overweight at the start of the pregnancy.  I am definitely gaining weight faster the further along I get. I'm on track to gain 25 pounds, but I expect it will be closer to 30+.

I've gained 20 and I am 27+4 today. According to those little weight gain suggestion calculators I am just eating all day long and have gained more than my recommended 10-15 pounds. What I don't get is this- if a baby is 7 lbs and boobs 2-3 and all the fluids and uterus and placenta add on a few more to approx 20 that's NOT our fault at all, how can they expect "overweight" ladies to put on less than that? Should I be making a balloon instead of a baby or somthing?

I had a mini melt down at my appointment yesterday.  I am 29 weeks and have gained 17lbs... not bad you think.  But the scale tipped over 200 and I told my husband I now weigh more than he does.  He didn't care, but I did.  I knew I was going to get there at some point.

I"m 5'6 and have always been a bigger person around 180lbs with an athletic build and big boobs. Friends and family keep telling me how great I look, but I still see that number in my head.  I'll get over it, but the struggle is real!  "healthy baby healthy baby healthy baby"

Who else has joined the 200 club???

I'm in the 200 club, and that's the number that I've always told myself I wasn't "allowed" to go over. I weighed 223 when DS was born, finally got down to 188, and now I'm back to around 210.

I was 207 the day before my first son was born ... I'm gonna be heavier then that this time around, I'm already 204. I'm not worried, I went down to 135 a year and a half after having my son... Slowly gained it all back though !

@RainbowMama7 yes, yes I feel you.  The guidelines are there just to be that - a guide.  I just looked on the pregnancy weight calculator, and I am way over.

Time to join the gym.  I feel so tired after work that I haven't been the whole pregnancy - but I am going to force myself.
Yes, these weekly or monthly guidelines about weight have GOT to be just that. They are meant to be helpful and keep us within what they at least think is a healthy weight to gain. I wonder what research has gone in to the 25-35 pound recommendation for women at a healthy weight before pregnancy? But I really wish doctors wouldn't get on us about weight if we don't match the exact timing of gaining that healthy amount. Who does anything at EXACTLY the statistical average? A bunch of us are all within a few weeks of each other, and have gained simular amounts (and are all still probably overwhelming healthy rather than not!), but exactly WHEN we gained that differs dramatically! And the rate of gain goes up and down, affected by so many factors. I bet a ton of it has to do with genetics - our bodies are "programmed" to get our fat percentage up to a certain number, or to retain a certain amount of water.

If I have a pet peeve with the OB practices it is that they don't seem to acknowledge individual differences. When they see we don't match the guideline, a lot of them tell us that and to make changes. When most or all other factors are fine (no GD, pre-e, etc.)! I wish they would mention it, then acknowledge there may be differences and no real reason for concern unless our rate dramatically increases.

I'm also frustrated by the fact they give a range of 25-35 lbs as a guideline to every woman at healthy weight pre-pregnancy. Regardless of height. Regardless of bone structure. Regardless of exercise level. So they would be happy with a 5 foot woman who gains 35 (which could be COMPLETELY healthy for her, or not) AND happy with a 6 foot woman that only gains 25 (which again could be completely healthy for her, or not). But they would be unhappy with that 6 foot woman for gaining 40? And what about the women that gain simply due to their boobs tripling in size, and that tips them past the guidelines?! That weight gain is not the same as weight gained by eating too much junk food or having no exercise!

I've gained more than I wanted to by now. 24 by almost 28 weeks. But hey, I passed my glucose test, eat quite healthy half the time and not horrible the rest, and walk 2-3 times a week. Nothing wrong with me or bsbt except for slightly anemic. Hey, I'll take it. Yes I may have to work harder to lose after birth but oh well. I can't do everything.

We should make t-shirts or something about respecting the individual process!
  • I'm 5'1 and at 27 weeks had gained over 30 pounds. My doctor hasn't been worried at all and I'm doing the best I can :-)
  • Ladies! Stop worrying about how much weight you are putting on! Focus on eating right, getting the right amount of exercise and rest! As long as that is what you are doing and your baby is healthy, then however much you gain is what your body/baby needed.
  • I am currently almost 29 weeks, and have gained 17lbs. This is my second boy and with my first I gained way.....too much (189lbs. C-section at 39 weeks, he weighed a healthy 7lbs. 10oz.) This time they are telling me I'm right on track and I'm hoping for a VBAC this time. My concern is that I hope he's gaining weight in there, since I only have 11 weeks left....maybe he'll be a tiny baby? Thoughts??
  • @caradull from my experience and that of my friends (not scientific) there's not much of a relationship between our weight gain and the baby's weight except at the extreme ends. I gained a healthy 35 lbs with dd1 and she was under 6 lbs. She's still small- it's probably her destiny. Your baby's genes are coded for what their right body type will be. If they start out small but are destined to be big, they will get big.
  • I hate that they give us numbers as guidelines in the beginning because we all gain at different rates and have different circumstances. I've been pretty hard on myself about my weight gain, but my doctor finally said not to concentrate on my weight and to concentrate on how I look and feel. If things are looking good at each dr's appointment (measurement, BP, etc) and you are still able to function semi-normally (I say semi because I have slowed down quite a bit since I hit third tri), I wouldn't worry too much!

I did and I am struggling honestly. With DD2 I didn't go over 200 until 38weeks. Now I am 27weeks and over 200. I also had the worst first trimester with this one!! How can I be chasing 2 toddlers AND be sick during the first trimester and still have gained so much!?!?! Ugh....

  • I'm at 29lbs at 31 weeks. (I gained 55 with my 1st & 40 with my 2nd, yikes!) I'm not supposed to gain anymore (so the dr says) but even when I'm really focusing on good healthy eating and not giving into cravings, I'm still gaining. So whatever, if my dr has a problem with it... Who cares. Baby is fine, no gestational diabetes, I have low blood pressure, I'm not worried about it neither should she lol
  • I'm 31.3 and I've gained 11.5!! I almost had a heart attack the other week when the Dr told me I gained 4.8 pounds in 3 weeks, I'm already overweight so my goal is 15-20. But somehow when I went back this past week I lost two pounds, no idea how when all I do is eat it feels like.

I don't think this was what the op was looking for. Sounds like you are bragging while clearly the women on this post are struggling and concerned about something?
I disagree. I've gained 11.5 so far and I'm really struggling with it! Not just "high" numbers bother every women. I think it depends on the weight and bmi that you start with.
  • I've gained 22 lbs at 29 weeks. I gained 45 with my first (on a 4'11 frame) so I'm being a little bit more mindful about what I'm eating this time around. Plus, I don't get to sit on the couch and eat half a pint of ice cream like I did with my first kiddo (whomp, whomp).

For those of you a little skeeved out by the scale, remember that you're supposed to gain 1 lb a week in the third trimester. So just keep that in mind!

I agree with this :) I gained almost 60 with my daughter and she was only 6 pounds 15 ounces. This time around I have gained 17 pounds and have a feeling that my little guy is going to be huge!
  • Thought I would do a quick update! I was struggling with having gained 17 pounds in 8 weeks (20 total during pregnancy) and then failed my 1 hour glucose. Well that scared the living day lights out of me so I cut all sugar, lowered carbs, and made a point to walk a couple miles each day (it's hard when I work 10 hours a day!). After two weeks I was down a pound! I was already eating lots of healthy food, but I was also indulging on not so healthy foods (chocolate covered pretzels, anyone?) Obviously I'm not saying to diet and lose weight while pregnant - my point it that a couple miles a day, eating well, and dropping the sugar-filled crap could get you back on track! My midwife giggled when I told her I stopped eating sugary crap after failing the one hour but she said as long as what I am eating is healthy and not leaving me hungry, then it's okay.

I know it's tough ladies, but find a healthy alternative to satisfy those sugar cravings!
  • I just went to the doctor and like everyone want to be sure not to gain too much, but also want to keep healthy. He became a. It upset with me as I have only gained 3 pounds since June 15.... Here's the problem, anything sweet goes right through me (most food does actually) and when I am actually hungry and get food to stay put, I become extremely uncomfortable like my skin is going to tear open at every seam on my abdomen. I have gained 13 pounds at 31 weeks.... As long as he is growing, healthy and the doctors don't become too concerned, I will try not to stress... Take care of you ladies, and those little angels. We are all different and have our own difficulties. The end is near and hopefully healthy thriving babies will be here before we j is it!!

** pet peeve disclaimer- read the intent of the thread before commenting. I'm not sure the OP or any ladies who have gained a bit too much want to hear about people being 30+ weeks and only gaining 4-15 pounds. JUST saying weight can be just as sensitive a subject as vaccines and religion and you may want to not rub it in or show off if someone is struggling. This seems to be common lately ( not just on this post)

Gaining too little can be just as worrisome as feeling like you've gained too much. I gathered this was a weight gain concern thread. Not just about putting on too much but also too little.

@stephleslie86 me too !!! 38 lbs at 28 weeks but no one at my Drs office has said anything to me about it. I gained 70+ with my first so I am really hoping not to gain that much this time around.

Same here. I gained 57 lbs with my son, and he was 7 lbs 11 oz. He was 3 weeks early, so maybe he would've been bigger, but still. So far I've gained 20 lbs and I doubt I'll gain more than 30 or so overall, but DD is measuring ahead (I measured 25 weeks at my 24 week appoint and 34 weeks yesterday at 31 weeks!) I think she may be big. We'll see!

  • I started out at 230 lbs thanks to a lovely 15 lb weight gain from IVF medications. At this point I have only gained 3 lbs and I am 31 weeks. I'm just saying this to point out that a lot of factors go into the amount you gain. I was told by my OB I'm only allowed to gain 10-15 all together. The amount you gain isn't important as long as you and baby are healthy. My 3 lb weight gain hasn't stopped me from having to check my blood sugars and minimize my carb intake. I would take a big weight gain over that!
  • Not alone. I did most of my gaining in the 1st trimester. Cause being stress big time stress. At 29 weeks I've gained about 30 pounds. Not happy about it. Gonna be hard coming off. My own fault though.

This^^^ I have been a slow gainer and everyone is on my case. I eat, and eat a lot!! I finally gained 6 lbs in 4 weeks and my OB yells at me for rapid gain. She was right now I have GD and since being diagnosed I have lost two lbs:(. Can't wait to see how my next appointment goes:/
