I think these names are awesome . . . for a Christian romance novel. The only thing that should possibly be given one of those choices is the title of Lori Wick's next book. Please do not make your child have to go through life with any of those names.

Yeah, people really ignore the fact that it says "please be respectful"
Sweetie, you can't tell people how to post on a public forum. Also, it is not disrespectful to say that the names chosen have odd or offensive connotations. Just because you are religious doesn't mean the name is appropriate. Calvary is a sacred place and it is absolutely sacrilegious to use that as a name because you think it's 'pretty.' Calico just sounds like you are naming a cat and not a child. Remember that your child will have to grow up and hold her own in the professional world some day, and what may seem like a cute or unique name now will get mocked and overlooked on a resume. If you love the names and don't want to change them, don't come asking for opinions. You get what you ask for.
That's not the reason I want to name my child calico. I didn't even know until I searched the name.
My husbands dad actually knew a girl named calico from his class a long time ago and they never spoke or anything and moved away. 60 years later his sister ran into a girl on a plain named calico and he remembered her just from her name.
There's nothing negative about either of the names. I'm sorry y'all disagree. And if people want to talk bad about it behind my bad then so be it. I'm not one to care what people think. Our families love both of the names and that's all that matters. I only posted on here hoping there would be a few open minded people that could help the decision.
Thank you to the few that didn't tell me to chose something else when I stated clearly that I do love these names and will not chose anything else. That means a lot. So thank you.
I'm not religious and Calvary is about dudes on horses and war and war isn't something I would want associated with my kids name. Maybe for those of us that don't know the religious Calvary association you could explain what it reminds you of. Does it have a positive association with the crucifixion- like sacrifice? If it's violent or makes other people think of violence I really wouldn't want that.
Calico also makes me think of cats like a few others have said but i love cats and think it makes for a good unique name.
I vote Calico Sky because I don't think Calico Belle flows that well but without knowing your last name it's hard to know the flow of either. .
Also, it can also refer to a type of cloth, like muslin (not sure if that makes it better lol). Either way, lots of names have strange meanings. And I love cats so either way I don't mind it I'm for Calico Belle!
I won't touch the more divisive Calvary though . . .
As someone who is not religious and who is also dyslexic I see "Cavalry." Like, "Call in the Cavalry!" And I guarantee that people will mispronounce it that way her whole life.
I've been thinking about this all day, and I happened to be over at my parents' house so I chatted with them about it a bit. OP, honestly, this is bothering me more than it should. PLEASE consider an alternative to Calvary and Cross. Have you looked up the literal definitions of the word Calvary? Beyond just "It was a place of significance in the Bible and it's a nice-sounding word"?
Calvary: 1. an open-air representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. 2. An experience of usually intense mental suffering.
Biblically, the place was also called Golgatha, literal translation is "the skull." It was the place they took criminals to be tortured, hanged, and killed.
You want to put all of that^ on your brand new, innocent baby?
Want to talk about the cross? Christians have certainly done a good job turning it into a beautiful symbol by putting it on necklaces and bibles and t-shirts, but in Jesus' time it was literally equivalent to the electric chair, gas chamber, or a lethal injection. It was a means to brutally murder criminals. Its purpose was brutal- it was the ultimate form of torture. What Jesus did, sacrificing himself on it for the sake of his children, was indescribably beautiful and amazing. But that doesn't change what the cross represents.
I'm personally appalled that anyone with even a tiny amount of biblical knowledge would ever consider using either of these words as names.

I have to second this, no one on this board was disrespectful to the question you asked. Everyone was honest & respectful actually.
My dad is a pastor, and along with me he was kind of apalled.....and felt the name choices were disrespectful..... Calvary and Cross, represents Jesus being tortured and dying!! Yikes!! I love different names, and names that have meaning, but those names might be asking for trouble!! -not disrespectful, just honest because you posted a thread about it asking for our opinions.

like many others Calvary sounds scary to me as a Christian, but I really like Calico Sky, whether anyone here likes them or not you're the parent, you are free to name your child whatever you want there was a lady in Sonora Mexico that named her son Burger King so trust me your names are perfect!
Trigger warning: disturbing

I completely agree. I asked my 96 year old pastor grandfather and his reaction was.... oh no no, that's terrible. Why would she choose that?
There are so many beautiful biblical names. This however is not. I would be really upset if I was named any one these. I would change it as soon as I was of age!

You've gotten enough responses but I'll throw my two cents in as well- The name Calvary sounds off to me as a Christian. As in you're picking a gruesome (albeit significant) association instead of choosing a more pleasant Biblical name. I don't see anything wrong with Calico though, and I think it sounds pretty. I would vote for Calico Sky.
......I have the sudden desire to do a short form comic set in the bible belt where stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold Calvary Belle exorcises demons with the help of awkward fish out of water Mormon missionary Ezra Cross.
...No. Ezra is too normal a name for this. Briley. Briley Cross. And Lovecraftian horrors as well!

Calvary church is huge here too. That and the Calvary recovery center they run for drug addicts. Of course you are welcome to pick whatever name you want obviously. However, it is silly to ask opinions if you don't really want to hear them.
We have one all the way in malaysia too. The Calvary drug addict rehab centre. My mother had a cat called calico. So the name does conjure up feline images. Cross?? Seriously. Cross also means angry as in " I'm really cross with you!".
It sounds like you're naming your child a certain way so he/she gets extra attention. All I can say is, you're right on the money & I'm sure they'll love you for it.

And yet so fitting with the OP's lack of concern with the true meanings of the names she finds so delightful.

I suppose you're not a fan of exploitation films and B movies.....Cause Calvary Belle is totally a 70's exploitation film heroine.
Though, I'm thinking a Western setting might be more palpable. In hindsight my original idea relies too much on "refuge in audacity" and can too easily be seen as intentionally upsetting as opposed to affectionate parody.

Yeah, that's not quite the same thing. I did that because of the popped thread where people read it as pooped.. but nice try trying to call me out though
@CicchettiFamily Pooping is a normal everyday human function that progesterone makes difficult during pregnancy. Which makes it a pregnancy symptom, hence the multiple thread replies ! Queefing or fanny farts as you so fondly call it is not.It seemed like it was posted for shock value and attention.Which is why the majority of people reacted to your thread in disdain.
Yup total shock value and attention!! You called it! Haha that's cute. Sure yes yes I need and crave your attention!! I actually got some helpful information from that thread!
@bfavors it's kinda ridiculous. You say I had to made a whole thread about it, yet you had to make a joke thread about pooping. I really don't care if you posted it. I responded. Just funny!

Yep, I made a joke thread that more people seem to relate with. Sorry it wasn't the same for yours? Not really sure how to respond to your intention to spin my question to flame me.

Was your question not sarcastic? If not my apologies. Seemed like you were feeling the same as these other two ladies who seemed aggravated with my skit response and queef question. So of course I will respond! Anyways if you didn't mean harm, sorry!

It was honestly a question, but if I were to get snarky about it I'd ask why if you're doctor said herself it was a normal symptom, you felt the need to start a whole new special snowflake thread instead of putting it on the daily thread post? I personally would take what my doctor says over people on an internet forum
