Baby Names

Help with short first names!

I don't know the gender yet, but I have two definite names picked out for both.

Lane for boy.
Rami for girl.

I think Lane sounds much better and flows a lot nicer as a middle name.
Auden Lane is all I've come up with so far. Originally wanted Aiden but DH hates it :)

Completely stumped for Rami! Last name begins with an R, and have no clue if short or long name sounds better with it. DH loves Rami Grey.

Re: Help with short first names!

  • Are these family names or something with special meaning to you that you say they're definite?

  • Since both names are uni-sex, I would choose mns that are traditional.

    Lane Alexander
    Lane Joseph
    Lane Thomas

    Rami Charlotte
    Rami Genevieve
    Rami Caroline

so Rami is a masculine Arabic and Hebrew name. That being said I also wouldn't use anything with "ram" for a girl. What about Romy? Ramona?

  • I've never heard the name Rami before but Rami Grey sounds like rainy day to me. I don't know how I feel about Lane. It's not bad but it definitely feels more like a middle name to me. Instead of Auden or Aiden, maybe Adam Lane?
  • Lane is definitely better as a middle name. Rami is just bad for a girl, first or middle.

  • Love the suggestion of Ramona. You can call her Romi as a pet name?

Lane is okay as a middle but sounds very stuffy as a first name.
  • Rami? Not digging that a'tall.

Lane is alright but I like it better as a mn.

  • Rami is a different spelling of my mom's maiden name and is also an Arabic name which fits my heritage. It's more popular in the Middle East as a boys name but is considered to be both genders. There have been two girls named James this year in the celebrity world so I'm not too concerned with the fact it sounds masculine lol.

Lane has no special meaning to me, just a name my husband is obsessed with lol.
  • Lane is just a name my husband is obsessed with and Rami (pronounced Ramey) is a different spelling of my mom's maiden name and also an Arabic name which fits my heritage
  • It's not pronounced "ram-i" it's "Ramey"

DH is a Lane, so i'm pretty partial to that name.  I, for one, don't like it as a middle name because if you say the kid's first and middle name together it sounds like you are saying what street they live on!

But maybe you should be concerned...

The fact that celebrities do something does not make it a good reason to do it. Slapping masculine names on girls is an awful idea and sets them up future headaches (everyone who sees her name on a resume or application will assumed she is male). Not to mention, it perpetuates the idea that boys' names are 'stronger' than girl's names (the argument for why many choose masculine names - 'I want my daughter to have a strong name'). It basically implies that anything feminine is somehow weaker or less substantial. This might not be your intention, but that is how many will perceive your choice. Plus, your daughter might assume you wished for a boy instead. Just some things to consider.

  • Please don't base anything you do on celebrities. They are known for having terrible taste in baby naming. That's why people are so surprised when they actually use something nice and normal. Rami is all boy. I like it for a boy but can't find anything feminine about it. My friends (who are Indian) have a boy named Rami and girl named Lena. Have you considered that name? Is beautiful and feminine. Lane is kind of blah.

  • Rami is awful ! No offense, just reminds me of the girl in 6th grade who came to school bringing in a pregnancy test saying she was pregnant (it was her moms test). Then a couple years later I saw her on the Sally Jessie Raphael show about rebellious & troubled teens. lol Plus, it's just not cute for a girl name !!

  • Lena is very cute! ☺️
  • To me Rami is more a boy name and Lane a girl name based off the people I know with these names.
  • I know a boy Lane and a girl Laine. I don't know the original gender for the name or spelling, or if the spelling changes for gender, or what. And it's too early to look it up right now. I'd need more coffee for that

I don't mind Lane for a boy. Not a fan of Rami. I really like the suggestion of Lena for a girl
  • 4N6s4N6s member
Lane is alright, Naf of rami.
  • Lane is great! Rami just has so many downsides. What about Ruba or even Rabi?
