Sophie the giraffe

Can anyone tell me what the big deal about this specific teething toy is?

Re: Sophie the giraffe

  • I know it's 20 bucks and I still put it in my registry hahahahha =)) Just for fun. I think it's pretty much a fad.

My son is 5 now, is completely blind and autisitic.. and if he didn't end up destroying that thing, I'm sure she'd still be hanging around for him chew on Once in a while. Sophie was a favorite of his, so she's a favorite of mine! Already have one for this little girl!

Everyone I know raved about it with DS1 and I can say it was wort the $20 for him and more. He chewed on that thing forever and loved it. Bought one for DS2 as well. It's made of natural rubber and food paint which could appeal to some. I like the softness of is as well since my kids are throwers. I like that's it's flexible so it's easy for them to chew too. I bought one for DD as well. Some consider it a waste but I do like it.
This.  We've gone through quite a few.  My girls loved them.
  • My daughter loved it.  So I will be getting one for little man as well.  :)
  • I registered for the elephant one since that's my boy's theme! I've heard that some babies looooove them and some couldn't care less.

  • I got one for my first baby and it was totslly pointless he hated it and woulfnt have it anywhere near him!! He preferred to teeth on harder toys that he had. Im not bothering with Sophie this time!!
  • I bought one even though I felt like an idiot spending all that money, because I've heard such good things about the toy. I've read that a lot of people accidentally end up with knock-offs, though, so watch out! There's no telling what materials the counterfeit ones are made of. I got mine at Buy Buy Baby because there were so many complaints on Amazon.
  • I'm glad you posted this thread! I've been wondering what the big deal was. At first I thought it was silly, BUT she made her way to my registry and if she isn't gifted I have the urge to buy her myself. Lol.
  • I don't understand the popularity, but it apparently poses a choking hazard.

Ooo yeah I don't like the sounds of that. Maybe il get the elephant ?? I did feel how soft the toy is. We will see what the shower fairy brings
    :D
  • I don't know what the draw is, but DD who is 4 still talks about her. When I got out the toys for this baby DD didn't really care about any of them except she wanted Sofie back. I haven't decided if we are going to get a new one or just stick with the old beat up one from DD, but it would make a good Christmas gift for baby

  • I just got a Sophie at my shower. It feels silly to have such an expensive teether toy, but it's adorable. Plus, my mom loves giraffes and has an extensive giraffe collection. She always bought my older daughter giraffe-themed things (though dd was born pre-Sophie). So of course this new little one has a Sophie already!

I registered for Sophie for my twins & a very gracious shower attendee gifted both of them to me. When I opened them, everyone raved about how wonderful it is. We shall see!!

  • She even made in onto our Facebook birth announcement. Most babies I know love Sophie, so hoping this one will too. I feel like we pay $5 for a coffee, why not $20 for a toy that baby will enjoy? And I like the simplicity of the toy. Now days too many toys are so loud and bright.
  • Sophie is the best, DS1 loved it, totally worth it!

I have a knock off that is pretty similar but is a cow! I work in the dairy industry. It was about $12. A pp mentioned the materials the knock offs are made out of are not the same. While I found this to be true, I googled what it was made out of a felt safe getting it anyways. Can't remember the exact make up of it though. I found the cow at Walmart and they also have sheep and elephants.

  • I bought this for my daughter 4 years ago and she could give a shit about it. I still have it and it's drying out and cracking. I pulled it out for this baby and there is no way I can let him use it. Target has similar looking toys just like Sophie for maybe $12.

  • I was looking into getting one until I remembered it's made of latex which I'm allergic to :( if anyone has any recommendations of something similar but latex free let me know!!
  • We have one. We bought it as my 3rd dd's only Christmas gift from us since she was 3 mths old. She loved it. It's pretty easy for them to find a good chew spot with it and it's the only teether that got any action. I cleaned it and put it away for this baby. It's still in great shape. No wear even with tons of use.
  • Thanks! I was just genuinely curious if baby's liked it. I put it on my registery. I think it's cute but I didn't realize the price until I was registering so I wasn't sure if it was worth it. But now I know it's worth a shot! Thanks everyone!
  • My daughter loves it and has since she was tiny. We have Sophie books that she loves as well. We will definitely get another one for this baby.

We also have an Infantino elephant that is kind of like Sophie. Not as well made but a close second in my daughter's mind.
  • All of my friends babies have a Sophie, and they all recommended getting one, I opted for Lazare the cat (Sophie's friend) who was on offer for £6 so about $10. He's adorable!

My husband, unaware of the fad of Sophie, bought one for our baby as one of the very first purchases made. The baby better love it- it's awfully expensive for what you get!

You always need to be aware of what baby is doing, especially if baby has something in their mouth. From what I've heard from a lot of mom's,this thing is a godsend. I did not have one with my son,but may get one for this baby because teething is one of the hardest things to get thru for all involved! Baby teeth are the devil!

@sdnyc99 Sophie's been around quite some time. She actually has a cameo appearance in the 80's movie Three Men and a Baby alongside Tom Selleck.
  • Not a damn thing... You're just lame if you don't have one. If you don't have a wabanub you're doubly lame
  • We registered for Kiki the elephant...Sophie's pal :)
  • We had one for each kid. My dd couldn't care less, but she also didn't put anything in her mouth (weird, I know). My son put everything in his mouth and so was more partial to Sophie.
Had they not been gifts, I probably wouldn't have got them.

Well, I should clarify that she was born before Sophie became all the rage around here (I've read it's been around for 50 years). My daughter is 17...there are lots of things we have/do now that weren't popular when she was born. :)
  • I registered for one today . BRU is very smart placing them by the registry desk!
