  • LO has been acting different all day. No fever, wet diapers, etc but she has been super drowsy and a crappy eater, and very very cranky. She cuddled up to me and slept twice which is not normal. She's also gone 3+ hours during the day not eating, and she has eaten every 2 hours like clock work for weeks. Hoping it's just a phase or just an off day...poor girl.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • See a lactation consultant, soon, and have them check for both tongue tie, and upper/lower lip tie.  May mom, and my little one's latch and sucking has been getting worse.  We've always been having trouble with weight gain, so last week they decided yes, she had tongue tie (she was a bit too tiny to be sure to start off), and then the other consultant checked her lips this week, and they are both clearly tied.  It's not been a comfortable process for her either, the feeding, and I feel terrible that something fixable has been slowing down her weight gain.  It's also starting to effect my supply, so I hope it comes back up after this is fixed.

If it's not a tie, they should be able still to give you tips for how to improve the latch.
  • @CanadaMom17 my LO very clearly has an upper lip tie but no one seems to be concerned. She's gaining fine and latching ok (just constant sucking blisters and she clicks when she sucks hard) but she falls asleep at the breast always which makes me wonder if she's working too hard and that's why. Even the LC didn't think it was a problem because she was gaining but it's a very significant lip tie. I don't know what else to do or if I should just let it go.

Great idea! Except we have separate accounts so I'd just be splurging on my own dime lol. I'm not above leaving him at home though!

Hmm we had a tongue tie clipped, but LO also has a lip tie and no one suggested we get anything done about it. I wonder...

The last couple days LO has had a few feedings where he'll eat 10-15 minutes, act like he's done, then be hungry again 5-10 minutes later. I don't know if it's a growth spurt or something else, but he'll do it a few times in a row, so I end up spending a solid hour or so feeding him. I hope this doesn't last. :(

I seriously don't remember my daughter being so "different" every day ... Maybe I just don't remember but each day my new LO just has a new "problem".. Or something I have to worry about.. Didn't poop... Extra grunts...extra sleep... Then not enough sleep... Extra gassy... Extra crabby... Too sleepy and have to wake up.. I swear it's nerve racking, I thought seconds are suppose to be easier? Ha

Might be cluster feeding. My LO does this before bed.

You might be right. He was early, so had a lot of trouble breast feeding at the beginning. He's 4 weeks tomorrow, so I'm hoping it's him getting stronger and growing, and not having trouble again. But either way, it's exhausting.

  • I'm sorry if this has been discussed already. Out of nowhere my left breast really hurts on the left side. It's almost like a blocked duct. However I feed my twins and pump almost constantly and it's not getting any better. It actually hurts when they eat off that side, or if i bump it. It's not red or stolen at all. I have no fever. Could it still be mastitis? I never got it with ds so I'm not sure what it feels like.

It might be mastitis. I never got a fever when I had it but I did feel flu like symptoms. You could also try using warm compresses and or massaging the area as you nurse or pump. Then if it doesn't go away just get it checked out. Hope you feel better soon!
  • @DolphinLover2002 it might still be a blocked duct. I got one just because one pumping session I put too much pressure on one part of my breast and it ever so slightly blocked the duct, leading to inflammation. Without the fever it's not mastitis.

  • We saw a speech pathologist today since we were still having trouble after tongue and lip tie revision. Lots of good info!!! Highly recommended. They know things the consultants don't.

@dancegurl1118 there is a tongue and lip tie support group on facebook that talks a lot about when and how to get providers to take your concerns more seriously
  • @CillyMama @dancegurl1118 I don't have a fever or any flu like symptoms. Just the sore breast. It's been like this for 2 days already. I'll try the warm compress and give that a go. Hopefully something will give. Otherwise I'll be calling my doc. Thanks ladies!

  • @aresee my LO started cluster feeding right around 4 and a half weeks, and is 5 weeks 3 days today and still does at night. It's quite tiresome, even when there is no milk, he likes to comfort nurse too.

@janit368 I spoke to the LC today (she's very pro-revisions) and she said as long as she's transferring milk and her latch doesn't hurt me then it doesn't need to be revised. She's gaining weight well (about 1.5 oz a day) So I don't know if I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. For reference her upper frenulum touches the bottom of the gum, it basically is as much of a lip tie as you can get.

ETA: the only reason I question the need for revision is that she is 7weeks and still extremely sleepy at the breast to the point of I am not able to feed her if shes clothed, I have to do it in the light, and change her in between sides and she is STILL asleep making me think she's working too hard to stay on bc of the tie.

  • @aresee perhaps it's a growth spurt? Or LO had a day where he or she was over or under stimulated and babe is just needing mom. It might be more about comfort than hunger? ... I play this mind game all day because my little guy wants to nurse 24/7 (giving himself lots of tummy aches), and it can't be because he's actually still hungry. I keep reading the endless list of reasons babe might be wanting to nurse.

@dancegurl1118 my LO had two days like this last week when he was 3.5 weeks, and we spent both days just cuddling on the couch. Afterwards he was back to himself. I chalked it up to a growth spurt.

My LO gained over 2lbs the past 2.5 weeks lol
  • I keep having to waste an oz of breastmilk every time I give her a bottle. She'll take 2 oz and then cry like she wants more and by the time I get the extra oz lukewarm she doesn't want it. Kills me. Wish I could put it back in the fridge.

  • @dolphin_lover7 I have mastitis and just had a low grade fever (100.4), chills and aches for a few hours. I did have a red spot on my breast and they were itchy. Been on an antibiotic for just 2 days and feel so much better. I would definitely recommend a visit to the doctor.
  • So happy I listened to my gut about pursuing the lip tie. Called for a consultation so hopefully we'll get this sorted out. Almost every single symptom is what she has. I hate that just because she's gaining weight they overlook EVERY OTHER THING even though it pertains to her (and my nipples).

  • Okay, my boobs feel like they're out of control. Since LO is sleeping longer stretches at night, I wake up with crazy engorgement and leakage. The bamboobies normally help with the leaks, but my overnight pair were in the wash. My left boob hurts so bad it wakes me up. Happened twice last night. I have overactive letdown and oversupply probs and LO has been sticking to one breast. So I kept putting her on the left one last night because it hurt, but then she was too full for the right! So, the right one got crazy engorged. I just ended up pumping it. What a mess. However, I did get some long sleep stretches. I guess I just have to wait for things to regulate.
  • @dancegurl1118 glad you feel better about pursuing your LOs lip tie. I was reading your comments from earlier and it sounds like what my sister had when she was younger. The tendon on her top lip came down so far that when her teeth came in they came in to either side of the tendon, leaving a gap between the two front teeth. She was teased about it, and eventually ended up getting braces that slowly brought her teeth together there, and once they had been brought together, the orthodontist I guess clipped the excess. I don't remember much, I was somewhere between 13-16, she was 8-12, and all I knew was that she was having a procedure that was related to the stuff that had been causing the gap between her teeth. Anyway, she was really uncomfortable afterward and until she was an adult she would talk about that being a traumatic experience for her.

I never put together a lip tie with her experience until you described it, but I had an epiphany yesterday. Hopefully they will fix it for your LO before she gets as old as my sister, I still feel bad remembering it all.

  • 4 weeks and fussing while nursing? Anyone experienced this? Is it an age thing, growth spurt, gas?? She ate at 6:30 fussed and I tried soothing her until 9pm and then fed her and she fiinnnaaaallly passed out. I pray she stays asleep.
  • For some reason bfing is painful again? What's up with that?

When my LO does this it generally is followed by gas or a bowel movement. If he gets to fussy, I'll pull him off and sit him down somewhere by himself. Let him calm a little or work out some gas. Then put him back on my breast and try again. That usually helps.

I've fed LO on both sides per feeding since day one. Recently in the past few days she will only take one side, and for like 6-7 min less than what she used to nurse total time. She's also spitting up (a very small amount) after almost every feeding...which she probably did 5 times in her first 7 weeks. Any thoughts on either?

@mellymar might want to look into the possibility of thrush. I hope that's not the case though!

@amy4516 same here! Good thing we caught it early! Luckily my sis had told me about her experience so I caught on right away!

@dancegurl1118 I remember reading that as they get older they get more efficient on the boob...so maybe she's getting all that she needs now in this amount of time. No clue on the spit up, but we have more spit here too.
  • Any tips for clogged ducts? I've gotten one in the same spot like four times in the past week. Massaging it, heating pads, and hot baths haven't worked. Nursing helps temporarily but then it comes back in the next day or two. They get so painful! Any other tips would be so appreciated!

  • @dancegurl1118 per the spit up. My LO started spitting up more this week (5 weeks old) & I thought it was the coffee I got, but after researching, I discovered I have an overactive letdown & it shoots out & can cause spit up. So now I let her start & when I feel let down I detach her & let it shoot into the burp cloth for about 10 seconds & then relatch. She gets pissed but doesn't spit up as much.

I also only feed on one side & it works well. I do have to pump some in the morning after a long sleep though.
  • my LO has started spitting up lately, he is now 2 weeks and with the cost of laundry where i live i hope its not his new thing.

I was afraid of that, too. Its mostly toward the end of the day and the overnight, tho, in the morning after the girls have had some rest its better. Well, DH is tired of watching me stretch out this pokey rib or whatever it is, so a drs visit is in the cards for next week. I'll ask about thrush while i'm there.

Which begs a question - for breastfeeding related health issues, do you see your regular Dr (general practitioner), or your OB? Hmm...

  • @kristenk727 I feel like sunflower lecithin helps. Think the soy lecithin in chocolate. It kept coming up online and I got some at a natural food store. I'm not a fan of soy so I went with the sunflower version.
  • My LO Is 9 weeks and still nurses on both sides and still takes forever. Grow baby grow! Selfishly can't wait for more efficient nursing!

Hmmm I wonder since it's painful at the end of the day and overnight it's just due to a little bit of lazy nursing where you little one might be chomping while sucking. That happens to me here and there during the night if LO is too sleepy. I would think Thrush would be a constant pain issue. If you have coconut oil maybe look into applying it to your nipples for help if it is thrush which is yeast. ? Hope you get it figured out! & sorry you're in pain. Hope all goes well at the Dr.

Pediatrician might be the ideal Dr. For breastfeeding issues? And I would figure OB would know better than General Practitioner.
What's going on with a pokey rib? I've been kinda MIA in the board...
