Anyone with GD struggling to eat enough?

I have had GD now for about three weeks and have been on the diet given to be by my diabetic nurse through maternal fetal medicine.  I am fine with the diet and don't find it difficult to follow.  I am finding it difficult to get enough calories though!  I just feel like the variety of food is so limited and I find myself eating eggs, string cheese, and greek yogurt all the time and am getting sick of them.  I haven't gained any weight since I've been on the diet even though I feel like my belly is getting bigger every day.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions on how to get enough food?  I feel so bad that baby may be hungry!

Re: Anyone with GD struggling to eat enough?

  • I never count the calories, my head well explode if I try to keep track of that many numbers! As long as you're taking your prenatal and eating when you're hungry you're probably fine. I figure if baby needed more I'd be craving it! My belly has gotten bigger, but I'm still down from my pre pregnancy weight and baby is perfect!

  • @andietessie Sorry I can see how what I said could be confusing.  I didn't mean that I was actually counting calories.  I just feel like I'm eating less than I even ate before I was pregnant so I am just worried that I'm not eating enough but I'm following the diet they told me to.  I guess I just am used to eating a lot more carbs and having them account for a larger portion of my meals/snacks.  I just feel like there's not enough for me to eat while still being strict with the rules I was given.
  • Honestly I felt like that the first couple weeks.now I have a lot of protein and fiber rich snacks and I am more than satisfied.
Not gaining weight but the baby is. So I'm happy. I have even lost a couple pounds since I started, but I know I am getting a good mix of nutrients. I use my fitness pal just to count carbs, protein, and fiber.
  • @squigles28 Would you mind sharing the types of stuff you're eating that's tasting yummy and satisfying?  I'm looking for any ideas!  I think part of my issue is that I'm not really a big meat eater.  I just don't like the taste very much so getting protein is tougher for me and I've been relying on dairy a lot.
  • I've not been a huge meat eater this whole pregnancy.
But, recently, I've been snacking on nuts, there are some sargento things with cheese and nuts, and when I am lower on protein, we got some protein bars at sams club that are pretty high in fiber too.
I can't think of specific recipes but just more snacks instead of forcing myself to eat larger amounts of meat with meals
  • I just found the Atkins chocolate peanut butter crunch morning bars. Finally a. Bar that tastes good and is 15g of carbs for a snack. Of course my once a week teenage sitter ate TWO of them yesterday! How does she find the most expensive snacks in my pantry??
  • I put a blueberry muffin recipe in the other GD thread we have going, as well as a high protein pasta dish. You should go check the thread out. I think there's also other yummy snack ideas people have listed throughout. At this point it's a huge thread, so lots of reading, but it's worth it to find good food!
  • @squigles28 Thank you for sharing!  I've been trying to do almonds in my yogurt etc and I've recently added oatmeal into my rotation too.  I think my problem is I keep dreaming of pancakes and pasta ;)  I will definitely look into the protein bars as that would help me bulk up without resorting to meat.  Even for sandwiches, I feel like it's chicken salad all the time (or tuna once a week) but it's hard to eat lunch that isn't salad (boring!).

@jessicaS0914  I will definitely check those out!  15g is awesome and would be perfect for one of my delineated "snacks" in mid-morning or mid-afternoon!  Probably a lot more filling than just string cheese and apple.
  • @seamonkey4 Thanks...yes it is definitely a long one.  I started in but kind of gave up :)  On the pasta, do you know what the carb count is?  I was told I can only eat one cup of cooked whole wheat pasta for a meal, which made me think pasta was really out of the question for a meal because 1 cup cooked is like a side dish to me!
  • There is a great pasta barilla plus that has a lot of fiber and protein in it. You still have to measure, but it may keep blood glucose more stable. I'd suggest on the other thread, either search within the thread for specifics or at least skip to the last couple pages. There are a bunch of us and we are just supporting each other and helping problem solve.
  • What squigles said! It's called protein plus, so it really helps to balance out the carbs in the pasta. And bonus, it's not super chewy when cooked, it taste normal! The pasta also had shredded mozzeralla and chicken in, all which added to the protein count. After dinner my sugar level was in the 80s, perfect! Check out Pinterest, you'll find a lot of great recipes. I have made pb cookies, which contain no white flour or white sugar, taste awesome...muffins with no added sugar, and uses almond flour(yay protein), delicious and filling. I'm finding most foods actually taste just as good without all the processed crap!
  • @littlemama1227 I'm having this exact problem. I was never a huge protein eater before and combined with an aversion to poultry, I'm so sick of eating, and the past couple of weeks baby is crowding out my stomach so that I feel uncomfortably full all the time.

One of my go to's has been spaghetti with lean ground turkey or hamburger and mushrooms in it. I find that 1.5 oz uncooked is the perfect amount of pasta since I get filled up on the other stuff too. Nuts are another of my go to proteins.  Also thin crust pizza. You can try potatoes too, I've found that I can pretty much eat as many potatoes as I want to without doing anything to my bg levels. And taking a walk after meals really helps too.

Are they having you test your ketones? That is supposed to tell you if you are getting enough to eat, although mine always measure small unless I have a really high calorie dinner.
  • I was just diagnosed yesterday. Any suggestions for breakfast? I don't eat eggs and I can only handle so much Greek yogurt!

  • Wow thanks everyone!  I actually have eaten the Barilla protein pasta before, I just didn't think it was worth making because I always want to eat like three cups of it :)  Also the thin crust pizza has worked for me too.  Two small slices (no crust) usually fills me up and hasn't been a big high number inducer.  I will definitely check out the recipes!

@missliz53 They haven't had me test for that, but they did tell me about it because when I first was diagnosed I just stopped eating carbs because I was so worried about it.  My nurse was like "no no no no" and so I increased my carb intake.  It's been really hard balancing though.

@georgiadottie I've been doing a giant pot of on the stove oatmeal (steel cut) and then you can have it in the fridge all week.  I then microwave it and put a small amount of blueberries and a ton of almonds in it.  I also do the Ezekial brand english muffins with peanut butter or with some cheese.  Also I don't know if you are near one, but Whole Foods has these flax waffles that fall under my carb count.  I think two waffles are 26 g of carbs.
