Experienced Moms, opinions wanted on glider!

DH and I live in a decent sized apartment, but an apartment nonetheless. We currently have a full living room, sectional w/chaise and a pull out love seat. There is no space for additional seating and the nursery is too small to accommodate a glider. I am considering giving away the love seat to replace it with a glider/recliner. If I'm going to do this I want a long standing piece of furniture that will look good in a relatively contemporary living room. I am fine looking outside of the realm of typical gliders, and in fact would prefer that. Priorities are: Comfort, I want something that is easy to get in and out of esp. if I end up needing a C-section, styling, and price (up to $700 is fine but less is better). Please suggest away and if you would like to share real life pics of how your gliders have held up please do! Thank you!

Re: Experienced Moms, opinions wanted on glider!

  • Not an experienced mom but I've done a lot of research on gliders because I wanted the PB one but didn't want to pay $1200! I came across several blogs where people were recommending the glider from West Elm. Not 100% sure on price but I remember it being more modern/contemporary than I was looking for, so maybe check out their site? They only have 1 glider in the store.

  • Land of nod has amazing ones, some nice contemporary ones that don't just look like "nursery" furniture. It might be a bit above budget though, I can't quite remember what they go for.
  • Our glider was in the nursery. I spent a a ton of time in it and we still use it daily and my son is 2. We read our bedtime stories in it etc. Why are you putting it in the living room? Wouldnt you want it to be in a quiet discreet place in case you had company over or away from the family traffic. If it were me I would make room for it in the nursery.
  • As far a rec if it is going in the living room I would do a lazy boy glider they will look living roomish and be super comfy my parents have one and I love it!
  • @Glamgirl25 the nursey is only about 6' by 8'. There's just enough room for a crib and one tall dresser. No way is a glider fitting. I'm not concerned about company. If I need to feed my baby people better be OK with boob or they can close their eyes :) thank you for the suggestions so far!

Since it's going in the living room, I would splurge and go with one from Pottery Barn or somewhere similar. My sister had one in my niece's nursery and loves it and I will probably be getting one from there for LO2.

  • I'm not sure we would have survived our first without our glider!!! It's a must have in my book! Slumber land, pottery barn, and babies r us have really nice selections!
  • I fell in love with a glider recliner that we saw at babies r us for $500. I like the look of ottomans but don't like how much space they take up yet I still want to be able to put my feet up. It also had a relatively small footprint so it won't dominate the room. My husband is 6'4" and even he was comfortable in it.
  • I have to say the recliner was my favorite place, aside from my bed, after I had my boys. I could rock them to sleep and then out up my feet and fall asleep myself. It was big enough were I could use the boppy to breastfeed. I am not somone who is into co-sleeping, I am a very deep sleeper so it scares me. But sleeping on the recliner was nice because it's not as deep of a sleep for me as opposed to when I am in bed. But that's me, hope it helps.

  • With DD we went with a la-z-boy rocking recliner. I love it. So comfy. DH is 6'2" and fits in it comfortably like he couldn't do with a traditional glider.
  • We used glider ALL THE TIME with #1. I can tell you that this time around I will be buying a wingback style because it would be great to have somewhere to rest my head!!
  • That's awesome. I'm looking into getting a rocking recliner as well. My old glider is the most uncomfortable thing ever. I will for sure be looking at a regular furniture store and good call about the fabric protection, it'll be on the list of "must have."
  • Awesome! We were having this debate as well and opted to turn a chair we already own into a rocker (thanks pinterest!). I wanted the Morgan Glider at Babies R Us but $500 is not realistic right now.

It's actually not that hard to make it a rocker if you have a jigsaw and power tools. Alternatively there is a swivel base you can buy online for about $90 that anyone with a power drill could put on an existing chair.

Glad you found one! I went the cheaper route and got a glider/ottoman from Walmart with my first. I still sit in it to this day. It was $140 and was a lifesaver for MoTN feedings

  • We had a rocker/recliner for DS and will move it into the new baby's room when we finish it.  It was way more comfortable than a glider, which was good because we often slept in it!  Even when he got older, it was a lifesaver on nights he was sick (that first year or two is ROUGH!).  It's the only way any of us got any sleep.

We draped it with a quilt, blanket, or sheet to protect it.  It was way easier to take it off, throw it in the laundry basket, put a fresh one on, and deal with the pukey one later.  The last thing you want to do when exhausted and dealing w/ a sick baby or toddler is to bust out the cleaner and start scrubbing.  You may want to consider it.  It's not the prettiest, but it works.  You could go fancy and match the color to the room, but we just used stuff we already had.

  • @SummerOH that sounds like a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion!
  • We had a standard wood frame glider with pads the first time around because it was cheap and I wasn't a fan having spent so much time in it. Definitely going for a La Z Boy rocker recliner this time around.
  • I plan on buying all baby furniture from Craigslist. Been through the experiences of buying expensive furniture and seeing it get wear and tear, not worth the money in my opinion. You would be surprised at that nice stuff on Craigslist and you will save a crapload of money. Been there, done that with expensive furniture!
  • @ArizonaPA I'm in NY, the land of bed bugs and bed bug fear, I would NEVER buy anything upholstered second hand. Just can't risk it around here.
  • I personally never used mine because I was not comfortable in it. I preferred the recliner or couch.
  • Glad you decided on a recliner @willashbaby.
Your comment in the original post about potential c/s struck me. The first week or so that I was recovering from mine, our recliner was by far the easiest to get in and out of, as well as for naps. Didn't have to use my abs hardly at all to change positions in ours. I hope you don't end up with a c/s but if you do the recliner will be very handy. Sounds like it will be anyway though!
  • I never got one for baby#1 and though I didn't miss it I regretted it. We had a wood rocker that was a hand me down but I never used it. LO slept in our room until 4 mos so I just BF in bed or a chair in our room or BF on the sofa in the den. I fully intended on getting on for LO2 but with me moving into a 2 bdrm condo I'm not sure if I'm going to have room or funds. I will admit that buy buy baby stepped up there game and have several contemporary or modern looking ones for decent prices. I'm tall so my requirement is a higher back.

@ArizonaPA We went the Craigslist route for the crib and dresser. It was a $1500 set (was still in stores), in perfect condition, and only $450! I figured solid wood is easy to clean and insects don't like to hang out in it. But, like @willashbaby said, I'd steer clear of upholstered stuff. Bed bugs are a lot more common these days, even in homes that appear nice. And there's roaches, too, blech! Plus I'm funny about the overall cleanliness of upholstered stuff in general. You can't really give it a thorough scrubbing like you can wood. Just my two cents!

STM here. Skip the glider and get a la-z-boy rocker/recliner. I bought the floor room model for $250 and it was the best decision ever. There were nights DD was sick and needed to be held the whole night, and we could either rock or recline to sleep. It's way more versatile than a glider. We also keep ours covered with a blanket like pp said.

  • We got a smaller leather recliner rocker/glider from an overstock furniture store. Love it! It has gone in both nurseries and will be able to transition into a den or family room someday.

  • First time around, we went with a totally typical glider, from Target or Babies R Us. I hated how it looked, but I LOVED that damn thing. If you're nursing, you spend SO much time there. This time, I'm planning on the West Elm glider for style and comfort. Ideally, I want to buy 2 of them - one for the nursery, one for the living room, and ultimately both will end up in the living room as a matching set. I love the dark teal and blue textured fabrics!
  • We registered for a StorkCraft "glider" when we were expecting our first-born. A word from the wise: do NOT purchase a StorkCraft glider. It is very comfortable but it squeaks like the dickens & we can't figure out how to quiet it, and although it's called a glider, it's more like a rocker (you have to put some effort into making it move). While doing your research, go to the store to try them out, don't just order/register online, you'll be glad you put the legwork in! We're in the process of doing that ourselves...upgrading for baby #2!
  • Thank you all! We purchased a rocking recliner from La Z Boy, can't wait to get it!
