Post-Birth Body

Hey All! As a FTM I've been curious about what my body will look like after giving birth. There is so much info out there - much of it contradictory, most of it confusing. I'm not feeling really stressed about losing the baby weight, but more just curious about how much stomach will deal without that bundle of baby in it. I saw this article on Buzzfeed and found the photos really helpful/illuminating about the process. Given - every body is different and people will have different journeys, but I thought this info might be helpful to some of you all as it was to me :)

  • Everyone is different, when I gave birth my tummy was really soft and jiggly like the pp said. So I used a maternity band to help. I didn't look pregnant just flabby lol. It went away really quick, especially after going back to work and moving around again. My friend looked like she was still pregnant for a good month, she never got the soft looking belly. Not really sure why. You probably will still get a variety of answers... SORRY.
  • Your whole body looks a bit flabby. Even when u don't gain a crazy amount of weight. Just tender and untoned bc of all the fat u stored slightly leaving your body. The tummy pretty disinflated (ballon like....literally), so a belly band helps. I agree with first maybe 2 to 4 months looking a bit like your first months of pregnancy.
  • It just depends. I didn't lose all my baby weight with DD1 when I got pregnant with DD2. Took me about 2 years to get back to my pre-preg weight after DD2. I felt mushy for several months. Yuck, thinking about all that all over again.

  • On a slight side note - what belly bands do you all recommend?

I didn't know if it would actually make a difference so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on one of the expensive ones so I bought this one off of Amazon with low expectations. I loved it and it's in great shape after being worn for a month and washed several times. I'm already planning on packing it in my hospital bag.

  • It doesn't just look like that... the way it feels is so so weird. Like it's full of jello but empty at the same time.
  • Also, while on the topic, did you wear maternity clothes for a while after or go back to regular clothes? I'm wondering what kind of clothes I should bring to the hospital-especially to go home.

I wore a dress home with DD1 and yoga pants with DD2. I suggest something comfy and easy to BF if you're going that route.

Yes!  I lost most of my weight right away but it took a good 6-8ish months for my hips to go back to my pre pregnancy size. Your rib cage also expands when you're pregnant so tight shirts that fit before I was pregnant definitely didn't fit right away.  I wore maternity clothes for a long time because they were so comfortable. I packed maternity sweatpants, nursing bras, loose shirts for nursing, and that's about it.  I wore maternity shorts and a maternity tank top home from the hospital.

@BeachBabe22 - Can I ask how tall you are? Would this band work for someone with a shorter torso or would it be too long? I'm 5'3. Thanks! :)

  • I definitely wore maternity clothes for about a month, and felt floppy/jiggly for a few weeks. But by the time I went back to work I was back in most of my pre pregnancy clothes and I ended up smaller than I started because of nursing.

I'm 5'2 and have a short torso and it fit perfectly.

You should take clothes that you wore around 4 months pregnant. Any stretchy yoga or pajama bottoms will work so leave the jeans at home.

I wear maternity clothes because a lot of them support that jelly belly (I buy full paneled maternity jeans) and maternity tops are a little forgiving and easier to wear to nurse baby.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I lost the weight last time! My doctor actually got onto me at the 6 week postpartum for being too tiny :) my belly went flat again, but my belly button has never looked the same.
I don't know if the recovery will be similar this time or not! I'm six years older! I guess we will see!
I also wore a Velcro belly wrap for comfort and recovery and I swear by it! That and breastfeeding were my secret weapons.
There are definitely changes, but they're small and not a big deal. Worth it? Oh ya.
  • I remember feeling tiny after my son was bored and being seriously surprised when my pre-baby clothes didn't fit.
