Baby's weight

edited July 2015 in September 2015 Moms
At 31 and a half weeks, according to the ultrasound, baby is weighing in at 4.7lb. How are your babies measuring? Anyone find that the ultrasound was inaccurate?

Re: Baby's weight

  • I had mine done yesterday: 4.5 lbs at 31 weeks. Really curious how accurate that really is.

  • At 31 weeks mine was 4.8
  • 32+5 mine was 5 lbs 2oz. I'm hoping it's high because if the baby goes to term he will definitely be pretty big. My first was 8 lbs 7oz and OUCH during the no pain meds delivery! Twins were born at 33.5 each weighing around 4lbs.

  • At 30 weeks exactly my baby weighed 3lbs 4oz
  • I have no idea about the general accuracy of these measurements - my DD1 was estimated to be 8 lbs something at the hospital when I went into deliver her but ahe was actually 9 lbs 6 oz! No joke. Yes, emergency c-section at over 2 weeks overdue. She was literally just hanging around getting bigger and cuter. :-)

This one was estimated at 3.5 lbs at 30 week ultrasound - we had an extra u/s due to baby not being cooperative and tech not being able to get pictures she wanted. I am curious about how often the estimates are close!
  • Thanks ladies! My doc mentioned about possible c-section d/t size, no thanks doc!!
  • Ultrasounds can be +/- 1-2 lbs either way. That's what the tech has told me. I haven't had an ultrasound since 26 weeks and he was 2 lbs, 7 oz.
  • At 30 weeks was told she weighed 3 and a half pounds :-)
  • I am not sure if size determines c-sections or not, mine was due to other complications (long list - didn't dilate, etc) but maybe DD1 size played a part since she actually moved up 4 cm during 28 hours of labor rather than down. She got my sense of direction, what can I say? :-)

I know lots of ladies (MIL, friends, relatives) who deliver big, healthy babies naturally. One just delivered with hypno/water at home and had a 8 lb 6 oz baby just last week. So amazing! I didn't think baby size leads to c-section unless baby gets stuck, that would certainly lead to fetal stress. But obvi your doc knows situation. Don't worry small mom size can still have babies naturally. Our bodies are amazing!
  • OK how do all of you get so many ultrasounds? I know with my first I wouldn't have had one at 34 weeks if I want measuring small. Do your Dr's just check the weight or do you guys have other health problems they are monitiring? Just curious. My first measured 5lbs at 34 weeks and born at 8 12 but dr has made no mention of worrying about weight with this one.
  • I have type 1 Diabetes so I get monthly ultrasounds. I LOVE seeing her cute little face but I wouldn't be sad if I didn't have so many ultrasounds
  • At 27+6 my baby girl was 2.6. I have another ultrasound Monday at 31+4 looking forward to see how much she weighs lol xx
  • I'm so jealous! At my 20 week ultrastound the tech told me that they are unable to tell me the baby's height or weight! I haven't had an ultrasound since so I honestly have no clue how big my baby is.
  • I don't think it's common practice around here to check weight unless you have diabetes so I have no clue. Doctor simply measures belly, pokes belly and weighs me to see progress. No idea this time or last.
  • @thefuturemrsdaniel I have an U/S as part of a biophysical every week, however they only check his weight every other week because the weights aren't accurate enough to check every week, this is because I have GD and have had other complications. Most insurance companies only cover 3 U/S during a pregnancy, I'm just lucky that my insurance company doesn't have a limit.
  • I've had 5 so far but the 4th was supposed to be my last. They found some fluid in kidneys at the 20 wk one so requested the 30 wk one to monitor it. But US tech said something about having another one so I'm not sure. I'm 31 wks and baby measured 4.2 lbs last week. Btw he's going crazy in there! Started having Braxton Hicks and feel like he's kicking so hard, sitting so low it's really uncomfortable.
  • At 32 wks my baby girl measured 4 lbs 12 oz. the tech said she was on the larger side. So we will see!!!

At 31+6 baby was 5 lbs 9 oz!!! The tech said a large baby. But I know from past experiences that the size measurement from an ultrasounds isn't very accurate.

I'm expecting a 8lbs babe but I honestly doubt my babe is already over 5.5 lbs.

  • I'm 31+3 days and I have no idea how baby is measuring! This is my fourth, and my Dr. doesn't really check until closer to 35/36 weeks. The ultrasounds have always been way off for my little ones anyways.

  • Im 31+4 and as of today, baby's weight is 4 lbs 4 oz. Tech said her weight was normal.

We will weigh her again at 35 weeks.
  • We will check baby's size next week, I think.

Ultrasounds can be inaccurate, so don't plan everything around that. I was told with DD that she would be 8+lbs, but when she was born at 39 weeks she was only 5lbs (which resulted in sending MIL out to get preemie clothes!).
  • Had an ultrasound this morning (to check on placenta issues -- all is good :)) and we finally got the weight of our LO... he is measuring about 5 pounds now (I am 33 weeks) I was told this means he could be an 8 pounder come 40 weeks.... I am also measuring belly wise at 37 weeks... but my amniotic fluid is right on 33 weeks I guess?  I have seen when they give the weight that the 20% margin of error plays a big role... my sister was also told she would have big babies around 8 pounds but then my niece and nephew both came out 6 pounds and barely 7. So not sure how much I want to go by it.. so long as he is a healthy weight range

  • Our little boy was measuring 4 lbs. 6 oz. at 32 week 1 day ultra sound this past week. The tech told me he'll most likely be around 7 lbs. My daughter was 4.5 lbs around 32 weeks as well and ended up being 6 lbs. 13 oz. (she was born a week early).

I was only supposed to get 2 US. I've had several things come up that caused us to need to have a look at baby. (Bleeding episodes, fall injury, pPROM)
  • My LO was 3lbs at 30 wks but we'll see again in a couple more weeks. Based on everything I've read I put 0 faith in the ultrasound measurements, seems like they are off more than they are on.

I have extra USs because I'm high risk; luckily nothing major but risk factors are basically the only reason any of us are getting extras. And missed pics of vital anatomy as PP memtioned.
  • The little guy was 3 lbs 3 oz at my 28 week ultrasound and I was measuring 33 weeks. No ultrasound at 30 weeks but my belly measured 32 weeks so my guess is baby had a big growth spurt. My next ultrasound is at 36 weeks and I'll have them weekly from then on due to my age.

  • The suggested weight this app says has never once been right for my little man. I'm 32 weeks 5 days today and he is 4 lbs 8 oz already! They showed me the growth chart and everything and he's only measuring 4 days bigger and perfectly on track
  • Weight estimates have a 2lb margin of error in both directions. Meaning the weight your doc tells you based of ultrasound can be wrong by up to 2 pounds either bigger or smaller.

  • At 32 weeks, my baby was said to weigh right around 4 pounds. I was told it looks like she'll weigh about the same as my boys did. I'm glad, I was afraid she would be larger.
  • At my 30 week ultrasound, my baby was weighing around 3lbs 3oz. Slightly smaller than average (45th percentile). At my last appointment at 34 weeks, I was measured and told that he should weigh between 6.5 and 7 pounds when he's born. (: I'm pretty happy with that, not too big and not too small.
  • At 35 weeks baby is 6lbs and 5oz!! I've had 3 ultrasounds. 1 20 week anatomy scan and I had to go back because she was being difficult (that was the 2nd) and I just had 3rd one today to check size. I had blood sugar and on the higher end of normal for weight gain. Doc just wanted a better idea of her size.
  • I have low afi so I go weekly, they don't allow me to see or hear the baby ( hospital policy) But the tech this week told me my baby is 4.2 pounds at 32 weeks.

I have had U/S every 2 weeks since 29 weeks first because he wouldnt cooperate at the 20 week scan and they couldn't get all the shots they needed. At 29 weeks we ran into problems his head measured 2 weeks ahead and was holding fluid. So I went back at 31 weeks and his head measured 4 weeks ahead! Then at 33 weeks we had another scan and its still measuring 4 weeks ahead but it hasn't gotten worst! His ventricles are not as dilated and he is holding less fluid! I would rather have had the one U/S and not have extra scans and everything be normal. There's usually a scary reason to have more than one. At my last scan 33+4 he weighed 5 lb 12 oz!
  • At 31 weeks she weighed about 3 lbs, 12 oz.

  • I'm almost 35 weeks and baby measured 6 lbs 7 oz at the u/s yesterday. I'm really hoping that estimate is a little generous or she's going to be a big baby when she's born. I have GD, but my numbers have all been really good and I haven't gained any weight in over a month.
  • I have had two since my last response and another tomorrow and Monday. At 31 weeks he was 4 lbs, 5.5 oz and at 31.6 he was 4 lbs, 15 oz.
  • 33 weeks at today's appointment. Said she was about 4 lbs 3 oz and measured in the 24th percentile.
  • My "little" man was 5.4lbs at 33 weeks. They said he was a week ahead of schedule for his weight. That size is more for a baby at 34weeks. Oh well. He's a healthy baby is all I care about
  • I go weekly for u/s for a cord anomaly, and this week at 34 weeks he is approx 4.8 lbs they're saying.
