Infertility

Introduction (warning loss/previous preg mentioned)

Hi to all,
I'm new here, and have been lurking on and off for a while. I think after searching the boards that this is the most appropriate community for me at this time. A little background: I've been TTC with my husband for 2 years. We got pregnant very quickly after stopping BCP 2 years ago, followed by a pretty immediate MC, then another preg, and a later, more devastating MMC (12 wks) requiring D&C. Despite many normal tests for both of us, (HSG, SA, regular periods OPK), we have unexplained infertility since the D&C. We've done clomid for 5 months (with a break in between at direction of my OB/GYN), still without pregnancy. I am hoping this board is a place of learning for me in terms of learning to advocate for myself as a patient and just interact with some knowledgeable and caring ladies that can truly understand. Any insight or positive thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Introduction (warning loss/previous preg mentioned)

  • Sorry for your losses...Are you seeing an RE or still followed by the OB? Have they checked your progesterone levels? Or any kind of monitoring (US/BW)?
  • Loading the player...
  • Thank you..I've only had US after the first loss to check lining - it was normal, and I've only seen OB. I guess this is one of the reasons I'm so frustrated- I asked if progesterone level, or visit to RE were appropriate and it seems my OB keeps thinking it'll happen without those steps but it's not. I'm new to this kind of forum- what is BW? And to clarify the second loss was in Nov 2013- nothing since then! I'm thinking that Id like to just go to RE.
  • Bloodwork. Yeah, that's a long time without anything new happening. RE is definitely the way to go. There has to be something that explains all that, and just waiting isn't going to fix it. My RE is of the opinion that there isn't much truly unexplained infertility, and that if you look carefully, you'll find what's wrong. We've been TTC for 2 years and I had a number of symptoms that OBs completely disregarded soon after I got off the pills. My RE gave meds a chance (Letrozole), but when that didn't work and symptoms kept piling up, he decided to do a surgery. We just found out that there was some small abnormality with the shape of my uterus, and I had severe endometriosis which couldn't be seen on any US, but completely surrounded my right ovary, and was spread to my bladder, bowels, liver and diaphragm. The last OB I saw (when I had severe bladder problems a year and a half ago) did a 15 seconds internal exam and said there was no way I had endo...The optimism is nice, but in the long run, it doesn't help!
  • Thanks for understanding. Yeah, I feel I've kind of fallen through the cracks and kept hoping it would just happen. I'm glad you have some answers. Did you find an RE from OB recommendation? Should I request bloodwork before going there or would you recommend just starting w the RE? Thanks for your insight.
  • I'm in Canada, so it may a little different here. My GP did basic BW and got DH to do BW and SA. Everything seemed normal, and he referred us to one particular RE that he prefers. I would ask your OB or GP whether there is anyone in particular they would recommend. If they don't know (that'd be strange I think), then I'd look up clinics in your area. You don't know what you'll need yet, but do check their stats (there is a website for clinics in the USA with their percent success, for IVF).

If you can get referred right away without doing any tests first, that's probably good (why waste time?)We ended up having to redo everything at/after our first appointment (11 vials of blood plus 2 US, plus a whole cycle of monitoring with BW and US, HSG and 3D US). What matters is that you feel like they 'get' you: you know your body, and it something doesn't feel quite right, say it. Good luck!

I'm echoing @kidshrink - your OB seems well intentioned, but it's time for an RE. You didn't mention your age, so I'm going to guess that she thinks that age is in your favor and there's still time for it to just happen. It makes everybody on this board wary to hear an OB prescribing clomid to begin with, but given your history it's worth a talk with an RE.

If you've done five rounds of clomid, you only have one cycle left total - it's within your rights to say you don't want to do your last clomid cycle without talking to a true specialist first!

  • Thank you-I agree. You ladies have given me the info I need to seek RE now.. I'm 30 and not getting any younger waiting so I agree it's time. I was thinking the same- I don't want to do any more clomid without RE.
  • I agree with above. See an RE ASAP. After trying for a year, and seeing my OB, we did get pregnant but had a miscarriage at six weeks. From that point on, I knew something was off and decided to go to an RE. Although, 6 months later I had an ectopic pregnancy, we decided to move to IVF and are going through that process. Good luck to you!
  • Thank you! Good luck to you also! I hope an RE doesn't take forever to get apt with because now I'm anxious to get there.
  • I was referred to my RE by my obgyn. I had done 3 unsuccessful cycles on clomid under my obgyn care so she referred us and we were luckily seen pretty fast! Make sure they check your thyroid that can cause issues with infertility as well! Best of luck!
  • I got referred to an Re by my on gyn on a Friday and I met with the re the following Friday. Not long at all. At least for me. And I was just a few days until my period so I was able to start clomid almost right away as well as all the tests.
  • I'm new to this board but I agree with everyone else.  You need to see an RE as soon as you can. I have endo so having a baby on my own is slim to none.  I had to have help with my first child (surgery) who is 7 now and haven't been able to get pregnant again.  I have been seeing an RE this year and he and his team have just opened this whole new world to me and really gotten me on the fast track to conception.  My OB referred me to my RE but I know some OB's are hesitant to refer because they think they can fix it.  I am blessed because mine said I have done all I can to help you and it's time to see someone else.  My RE nurse told me that a lot of OB's have a hard time letting a patient go to someone else.  I don't know if that's because they think they can do it or what.  I'm sure it's with the best of intent but after one year of trying then there is possibly a problem.  If your OB is hesitant to refer you to someone (kind of sounded like he was) then get on the web and find one yourself.  I have to travel 4 hours to mine but thankfully I can be monitored in my city at my OB's office.  Be active in your fertility journey.  You are the one that controls the shots.  We get so little control in this because our bodies are fighting against us but this you have control over.  You call the shots and if you feel like it's time then that means it is time.  I'm so thankful I went and have become very proactive in my journey.  I'm hopeful for you, that you find the desires of your heart.

  • Thanks- I've got an appointment w an RE in about 3 weeks ( bc of my and my husband's work schedule and hubby wants to be there). I can hardly wait but hope it will be worth it.
  • That's exciting and I'm so glad your husband will be there.  It's so wonderful to have someone sitting there with you when you hear all that the doctor has to say.  It can be overwhelming, not negative necessarily, just a lot of information.  Good for you guys! 3 weeks will be over before you know it.
  • Thanks for the support- sure hope it goes by quickly!
  • That's so great. Good luck to you. Three weeks is a good time. Mine was really sudden. Which was great but I felt like I didn't prepare myself mentally. Like whoah I'm really doing this. I could actually be pregnant this month.
  • Good luck to you also!
