Told Wrong gender?

Hi Everyone, I have a question, has anyone been told they was having a girl at 18-20 weeks but ended up being told later boy ;-)

  • huh???... ok... I was just asking if it was possible that the tech mistakenly said girl but then someone found out later it was a boy? Not sure why all the photo comments about being punked!
  • new to baby bump maybe I should have posted in an early birth month group instead for comments...*smh*

Just in case this is a serious question....
With the current US technology, and the tech is able to get a clear shot between the legs it is almost impossible for them to wrong. If the tech was not able to get a clear shot and guessed there is a possibility they could be wrong. The tech should of mentioned if they were not able to get a clear shot.
With older US technology the pictures were not as clear, so it would be more common they were wrong.

Please trust your ultrasound tech. It's very rare that they are wrong at a 20 week scan.

ETA: PP beat me to it....soooo what they said :)

  • YES!! This happened to my friend! She was told by the tech that they were having a girl, she slready has a boy and they are only having 2 so she was super excited. As they were in the waiting room waiting for there disk the tech realized she missed a measurement and had them come back in. The tech was mortified when she realized she had screwed up and they were having a boy!! The tech felt so bad. They got "lucky" they found the mistake within 20 min and not at birth. They also ended up having to get another US at around 30 weeks for health reasons and it is deffinetly a boy.

So it's very rare with technology, but yes it can happen. Mine was done by my midwife and not a "trained tech" and the machine isn't as high tech so there is always room for error in mine. (My friends was a trained tech)
  • Thank you Cook3133- this was why I posted my comment, because I have heard some stories before of this happening too like my co-worker- they told her girl right up to birth and was shocked to have a boy- so I was just curious to see if it happened to another mother recently. And because my pics were not that clear I was just doing some research.
  • We were told, "I think it's a girl." So, I'm not completely trustworthy of the tech. I am having an elective scan next week at a place that guarantees to find the sex. If they can't tell, they will bring me back the next week. I'll have to let you know how that one turns out!

  • Let me just place this here...

Like most jobs some techs are better than others. (My opinion). With my 3rd son my midwife was 100% sure it was a boy, we had no clue what she was looking at and weren't positive she was correct. With my second it was VERY obvious! But she knew what she was looking at and was
Correct. This time though (different midwife both times) last week she couldn't say for sure and this week the picture was much clearer then with my third son and we are pretty sure we all saw boy, although I heard slight hesitation in my midwives voice so there is always a very small chance we were all wrong. My midwives are not trained techs but do US very often and know what they are looking at.

I know most machines are very high tech and often not wrong but we are humans reading the machine so there is always room for error.

That doesn't mean I am off to buy a bunch of girl stuff though!

If your not sure they were correct Google US places. There are areas that are just for gender US and cost anywhere from $75-200 bucks. One I looked at even recorded the heart beat to put in a teddy bear! I thought that was pretty neat. If I wasn't already paying a ton for my midwives I would do it. (We don't have insurance)
  • Thanks Exactly I couldn't post my U/S pic here to ask because my p/c wouldn't let me.. so it was a general question... but.. no worries won't be posting again...
  • I had my AS at 18 weeks, a couple weeks later I had a non baby related ultrasound, but baby was seen and was confirmed a girl. But The women doing the ultrasound used to do ultrasounds on pregnant women and said you would be surprised how often families are told the baby is a certain sex but actually isn't.

  • I smell a flounce.

Nobody is being rude. This discussion has come up many times and it's always silly because... well, because logic. The ultrasound tech is the one who is trained and knows what he/she is looking at. I don't. We wouldn't know better than a trained technician, even if you were to post a picture, which it sounds like you tried to and failed, luckily for us because we don't want to see your child's genitalia (sidebar: why do people always think strangers want to look at their childrens' genitals?!). Sure, being wrong happens occasionally, it's not common in 2015. They know what they're looking at.

When you start asking, "did they get it wrong?" it just sounds like you didn't get what you wanted and you're hoping they got it wrong do you still have a chance at having what you want instead of what you got. Instead, be thankful you have a healthy, growing baby.
  • Agree that if a US had been posted it would have taken it to the level of the other post. I just took it as curious if this has happened to anyone here and not "Is my tech wrong post". In which case it has happened to a friend of mine :)
  • I'd say they aren't wrong often. I've always trusted their results. I do have a friend who was told boy "Blake" and he ended up being a she "blakely."
  • Did this happen to you OP or are you just hoping to avoid "gender disappointment?"
