I know we have a feeding thread but I'm interested to hear what kind of formula you all are using as well as your experience. I know every baby is different but we are in the throes of figuring out a good formula for LO and I'd love to hear your feedback. Also, what are you doing to save money on your purchase? Where do purchase formula at the best price?
We started off using the similac supplement as that's what we were doing along with breast milk. The "taps" are runny dry so he is now exclusively on formula. We switched to the similac advance and he seemed to be tolerating it well but doing a lot of grunting during bowel movements (never constipated) and was occasionally gassy. He never really spit up though. Doctor said it was normal but being a FTM its hard to gauge what's really normal. We had a free sample of enfamil gentlease so we tried a few feedings of that. He spit up so much and had so many explosive poops that he's back on the advance.
As for saving money, my husband is truly the cheapest man alive so it's killing him to buy formula (although he of course understands it's out of my control). But he scours store ads and sales for the best prices. We also receive the manufacturer coupons for similac. We've found Walmart to be the cheapest so far but babies r us is running a special now which will be where we purchase our next batch.
Edited: LO is almost 6 weeks old.
Re: Formula mama's
We get formula online via amazon mom. 20% off and you can buy it in a four pack.
You can also use your similac/ Gerber/ enfamil bucks at SAMs club...
We've been supplementing with Similac Sensitive and she seems to be doing fine. But she only gets about 2/4 oz a day of formula.
We started with Enfamil Newborn but LO was gassy. We thought it was related to Palm oil in it. Switched to Similac, which doesn't. Gas got better at first, but back to being bad again
I would love to go back to Enfamil since it's cheaper but DH is convinced Similac is still better, ugh. We've been getting a lot of coupons for $5 off a can, which helps. I'm finding them for roughly $27-$30/each before the coupon. (I'm in MA so possible regional cost differences).
I'm a good 25 min drive from Target and Walmart, so I have not been able to check out their prices yet.
We did try Similac Sensitive for a few days but then realized it was for lactose intolerance and stopped using it because we shouldn't have done that before consulting the pediatrician.
Yes- formula gets the same discounts as diapers.
I know target offers a discount if you subscribe to items as well. I have not used it so I don't know much about it but it may be worth looking into.
We are using Similac Advanced, because we for two cans of it in the mail as samples and when the Dr told us to supplement it was right here. LO tolerates it pretty well, I think. He does spit up sometimes, but I think that's more from us giving him too much or not burping enough when we feed him. Stools seem normal, I guess (I don't know what an abnormal stool would be like). He does fart a fair amount, but his tummy doesn't seem to be upset usually. I think he's doing well on it. Well enough that I don't want to switch away right now.
As for $, we haven't had to buy any yet. I have the feeling that we will probably end up continuing to use formula, even tho I really want to bf it seems like I'm not making much progress, just holding steady. I did get some manufacturer coupons from Similac that I will use, and I plan to keep watch at Target and Walmart for who has the better prices. I live in a really small town, so those are my only options other than a grocery store or a drugstore chain store or Amazon. I do have amazon mom, I haven't used it yet (we are well stocked on diapers right now and I didn't even look at formula prices as I wasn't thinking I would need it) but I wonder if the savings thru amazon mom (if any) would be better than using the coupons I get from similac.
I still BF randomly at night time feedings. Some nights I do some i dont. My boobs are feeling good, not endorged at all and still give her enough at her feeding time. We switched to formula because I was so stressed from BF. I hated being the sole person who could feed her and getting little to no sleep was depressing. And now so much happier
We started on Similac Sensitive simply because my mom had bought a can pre-LO, and I had gotten a can at the shower. We've since switched to Similac Total Comfort because Sensitive was giving her really painful gas. She still gets it pretty frequently, but it's not an all day ordeal anymore. She eats 4 oz every 3-3.5 hours during the day, and will sometimes go 5-6 at night.
I've been planning on beginning to use Amazon Mom but hadn't yet. I'm glad some of you've had good experiences with it!
We just bought a case of 6 formula containers (I forget how many oz they are) from Amazon. We're Prime and Mom members to get the 20% off diapers and 2 day shipping but I didn't see a "subscribe and save" for the Similac formula. Maybe I should look again because it sounded like someone was utilizing that. Is that only certain brands maybe?
Check it out! So weird!
I've been formula feeding since the beginning pretty much. The twins were never getting enough and it took 5 days for my milk to come in! We started on the Kirkland brand right away and it's fine for them. They had trouble with gas a bit in the beginning but that's worked its way out now. They drink every couple hours and finish their bottles (4 oz) no problem! The one thing I do find is that one of my girls spits out at much as she takes in. Like swallow, spit, swallow. Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do?
@mellymar that's gotta be it re: amazon! The regular old Similac is not S&S. It's also more expensive on Amazon, which is surprising! At least it will get me out of the house and to the store every couple of days!
I've been using Wal-Mart's 'like enfamil' and his gas has been awful. When I had DD five years ago Gerber was the "cheap" stuff, now it's crazy high. So I don't think the price or brand matters. I assume it's because we had been EBF and his tummy is used to my milk. I may switch to soothe or gentle.
