Who's planning to cloth diaper?

Any STM's previously CD? Or know you want to this time? FTM's have you decided to or are you thinking about it?

What are you guys using?

Re: Who's planning to cloth diaper?

  • There was another thread on this already I think. I plan to cloth diaper again. I might need to buy more newborn diapers though since I'm having twins this time.
I love sized prefolds, Snappi and newborn sized covers for birth through the first few months.

  • I know it was discussed lightly on my intro.

We started CDing my son around a year old, when we moved and had our own laundry. So I need to buy an entire newborn stash. We use prefolds, snappis and covers too. Thirsties covers are my favorite. I did grab a bunch of SmartSnugs covers and inserts during their closing sale, we had a few with my son and I didn't hate them but I thought they would have been better for a newborn.

  • FTM - planning to CD. Based on some recommendations from a trusted CD-er, as of right now, we are planning to start our collection with the Best Bottom Diapers system.

  • I absolutely LOVE BB covers! They rock, run small (but they do offer tab extenders for older kids) but the double PUL layer is fabulous! I have never had a leak with a BB cover. I have only used them with prefolds though, never actually tried the system specific inserts.

  • They are my go to cover for my 2 year old at night because any other cover is always wet to the touch on the outside from my heavy wetter. Not BB!

  • I wish I was brave enough! Any working moms CD?
  • I know many that do! I've found its common to have one specific color or type of diaper to send to DC outside of your at-home stash. Of course, finding a CD friendly DC provider helps. ;)

  • Me!  Still cloth diapering my almost 2 year old.  hoping he'll be potty trained by the time baby #2 comes along, so we don't have to buy more cloth diapers.  Just use the stash we already have... except Lil' Joeys newborn diapers.  They are my weakness.

For the past 2 years, we've been using a wide variety including Bumgenius 4.0, Bumgenius Freetimes, Thirsties all-in-ones, Tots Bots EasyFits (my fav!), Rockabums, Grovia All-in-2's, WAHM brands, green mountain prefolds with econobum covers, lil Joeys newborn diapers, etc.  I love them all, but my favorites are anything all-in-one or all-in-two that require the least effort to fold.  I used prefolds and covers a lot when i was on maternity leave, but they're a lot of work for daycare, so I have only used them at night since he's been in daycare.
  • We love CDing! I was intimidated at first but we started when DS was 3 months old and we're so glad we did. We like pockets the best, our fave brands are Charlie Banana and Kawaiis. I also like BumGenius 4.0s. I'm pretty sure he won't be potty trained before new baby comes so we are going to have to expand our stash (oh darn!).

For great videos on CDing I recommend the YouTube series by ObbsAndLala. She has a video for every topic and explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand!

  • We tried cloth diapering and for one reason or another could never get good fits to keep them from leaking. Despite all the different makes we tried. Also, on the go with twins left me with way too much stuff to drag along and we never could find a nighttime diaper to hold us through the night so we ended up using disposables for nearly 50% of their pre-potty trained days. I'd love to try again but really don't want to invest anymore money than I already have in my stash.

  • I'm still unsure what I'm going to do, but interested in CD, just pretty intimidated by it. it is pretty much standard to wait a few months before you start CD, or just jump right it from the get go?

I am!!! I'm really excited about it.
  • We are very interested in CD. I've been trying to do a bunch of research as to what kind/type, but honestly It's really just over whelming for me. Since we will be first time parents, and are looking at a ton of expenses coming up, when is the best time to get a deal on our stash? Is it worth the wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday? Also, just any tips/tricks/brands I should be aware of? Thanks in advance!!

Last time we used Rumparooz and fitteds. I really liked the Rumps too! Thinking I might buy some more because fitteds and covers can be a PITA sometimes so it's always nice to have options. @Life is Exciting you
recommend the lil joeys? For the newborn stage I thought a diaper service might be nice too!

I'm definitely going to CD, but FTM so still just collecting others' recommendations... and I can never remember any of the type/brand names or what the benefits are... None of it is sinking in yet. Meh, plenty of time left to prepare.

  • @Bfavors there is no real standard. Some wait until after the umbilical stump falls off/circ heals/babe can fit into one size CD's. Others start in the hospital, some only CD at home, some only during the day. It's all about where you feel comfortable. :) I'm still undecided as to when we'll start, I go back and forth. I'll have some NB sposies on hand and decide when s/he is born.

  • We are still CD our two year old. We will add to the stash. We use pockets mainly, but used prefolds when he was younger and didn't move as much. I like bumgenius, funky fluff, rumparooz and kawaiis. I am going to try applecheeks again with this LO and see if I can fall in love with them.

  • We used cloth diapers last time and will again this time. Going with Thirsties Duo Wrap...just seemed like an all-around good system, excellent reviews. We used pockets last time...I like the idea for these that we reuse the covers--a little less to pack in the diaper bag.

They give some pretty horrible advice when it comes to cleaning dipes. :( They tend to recommend unnecessarily harsh/intense cleaning routines that end up wearing your diapers out MUCH faster than necessary.

  • I CD'd my first two boys and fully plan on it again once the baby is about 8 lbs and will fit into all the diapers.  My diapers are very well loved since I give them to friends when my boys grew out of them so I'm going to need to replace the elastic on them before this baby comes.   We use BG 4.0 and BG size Small for when they are really little.  I stocked up on the size small ones when I worked at cotton babies because they are discontinued now.

    We plan to.

As of right now I plan to use GMD workhorse fitteds with thirsties duo wrap size 1 covers for newborn stage. Wool cover at night.

Then we plan to use best bottoms diaper system post-newborn with wool covers still at night.

But they really don't, the only unecessary harsh aspect would be stripping and they don't even recommend that. Not the FLCS admins themselves, it's everyone else who is all strip happy. They only suggest that in extreme situations like months and months of hard water, mineral build up. I mean of course you should bleach your diapers if they are pre-loved but that's it. I've only seen a lot of great routines that are similar and more effective than what even CD manufacturers recommend. Like my wash is cold rinse with a little tide and hot wash with a normal amount of tide.

  • But I see exactly what you said, said twelve times over in so many other CD groups that recommend Charlies soap and homemade detergents etc. Some groups will even kick you out for mentioning FLCS... which is asinine because all of their info is science based and it all makes A LOT of sense if you actually read all of the files, and recommendations. They even have links for all of their sources etc. But I know there is a huge hate ring around that group for some unknown reason. A lot of people who ruined their diapers from bleaching wrong because they couldn't follow directions. Hahaha

Yeah, there's a reason a lot of other groups don't support FLCS... they give bad advice. Not to mention how quickly they kick people out for questioning them. That should say something right there.

  • I can't say I've ever seen or experienced that in there :/ Then again, I pretty much left the main group a while ago and just hang in the OT one because I love a bunch if the ladies there. I know they'll kick you out if you continuely rec methods and detergents they have "proven" to be harmful or not effective enough for clean diapers. Idk I haven't had any issues with my wash routine, and I know a lot of people who had constant stink issues or chemical burns before switching to FLCS recs.

  • I just don't see how it's bad advice? They tear apart these other groups recommended detergents or soaps ingredient by ingredient to show how they aren't effective and recommend detergents that are safe and effective, also going over them ingredient by ingredient to show why. I don't know, it all makes sense to me. And companies have even started to switch over to not recommending homemade detergents and Charlies soap etc. And recommending FLCS routines because of them.

  • We're planning on Cding while at home and doing short errands but also buying DD for when we know we will be out a little longer due to the convenience of it, my sister CD and she said she wishes she would've some it that way too.
  • I'm definitely thinking of doing the same, even when we go out for 5, 6 hours... that a lot of CD and a lot of bulk.

  • I am not a FLCS fan either. I cloth diaper full time, I love bottom bumpers because they're so trim, I love Sloomb for night time but they're so pricey I got 2 used and use AIOs with Fst at night. I use covers with prefolds and fst. I have a ton of different kinds obviously.
