  • Diaper Genies are always fun to see people mention because I have friends on both sides of that one. I have a few friends that say they are a must have and a few that say they aren't. We ended up getting 2 at my shower so I decided to just keep one and see if I like it.

This isn't a baby item, but I had a good laugh at the grocery store the other day when I saw "juice box holders" that were literally just plastic things you slide the juice box into with handles for your kid to hold. Since when can kids not handle holding a juice box?! Seriously??

I know some kids in the 2-3 range that when they try to drink from a juice box they squeeze it and juice ends up all over their clothes. The idea of an item with handles for a juice box would prevent this. Although you can always just pull the tabs loose from the top of the juice box and have them hold those. Just something I discovered about toddlers.
  • Omg we loved our bumbo! That thing was a real life saver and gave me a few minutes to breathe. We will definitely be using the bumbo this time too!

I would say-diaper genies and wipe warmers.

  • I think a formula pro and/or bottle holder make sense if you have multiples (who are formula fed) but otherwise nope.
I vote for wipes warmer in general. For me personally the biggest waste of money was my Brest Friend pillow. It felt awkward so I never used it. I always just used a throw pillow for both kiddos. I gave the pillow to my sister and she used it religiously for 6 months.

  • I hated the My Brest Friend pillow to. It was too firm and awkward and LOs would just slide down it. I loved my boppy though.

  • @CaliforniaDream87 I know a few other people who swore by theirs too, but wasn't for us. I think it is one of those that babies either love or hate. They had a recall awhile back because babies were falling while in them and getting badly hurt, but then I saw them still for sale, so not sure if they changed anything in the design?

We used the bumbo with the tray for meal time for 2 months because I couldn't decide on the perfect high chair.

Have any of the FTMs bought the baby bottle sanitizer/steamer things? The actual name escapes me. I was planning on just boiling water in a big pot and using that to sanitize the bottles, but my MIL (going off what my SIL did last year when she had her little one) suggested I get that. I personally don't see the point but thought I'd ask if I'm in the minority.

Nope you are not. I have a big pot, I plan on boiling water and throwing my breast pump stuff and her bottles and pacifiers in there (I'm going to do the bottles just in case the breast feeding doesn't go over too well)

The problem with the bumbo is that people don't understand the age requirement. I see people putting their 2 month olds, who cannot hold their heads up, in the bumbo. That's very dangerous. Also, smaller babies can fall out. It was a matter of common sense and reading the warning labels :)

It could be useful I guess but it totally freaks me out! Has anyone seen the floaty thing that goes around baby's neck?! Can you imagine walking into a pool and seeing a bunch of floating baby heads!! Nope. Nope. Nope. I'll pass! [-X

    They've been recalled!

I also think that the baby boy teepees for their boy parts are a waste! My friend bought like 12 of them

Haha. Yes. These are so silly. My friend made some for me out of extra fabric as part of my baby shower present (complete joke gift). All of the old ladies had no clue what they were and one even put it on her head because she thought it was a little baby hat. I'm glad that I still have control of my bladder, otherwise I would have peed myself.
  • Diaper Genie's...just the thought grosses me out. No thanks. I will throw it in the garbage.

The hot, sticky, humid North Carolina weather makes me say no to just tossing it in the trash! I can't imagine the stinky diapers festering in the garage!! [-X I don't plan on letting them pile up in the diaper genie like it is "designed" to do- but I don't see us placing them in the garage that's 120 degrees with my BMW.. Yuck!!!!
  • The baby bottle holder just makes me sad. C'mon people.

Umm I had those blue water crown things growing up and I swore by it. I had very thick hair even when I was born. This made washing my hair a breeze. No more crying and screaming and my parents could actually get the shampoo out. I already have three for my daughter.

  • @heath3er I was given two of these when I had my son. I never touched them. They were the most useless thing Ive ever owned. I just held the diaper over him until he was done peeing. Lol

Alright I'll step up and admit it.... I want one of those baby brezza formula pro's! This will be our second child and if you choose or need to formula feed, anything that makes those late night bottle making/warming quicker and easier- simply rocks.

We registered for one and my mil got it for us. She said that's one thing she would have loved to have had back when her boys were babies
  • Love the bumbo too. I was given a hand me down one or I may not have bothered buying one. They are now made with seat belts - I think the problem was older babies that had started rolling or crawling, climbing out and injuring themselves. My 2yr old DD has recently had a resurgence of interest in it and now sits in it all the time!
  • The diaper genie was useless in my house as well and the wipe warmer.
  • Such a fun post to read! Studf to keep in mind for sure!
  • Yeah I was thinking of getting the wipe warmer, but after reading this I think I will pass
  • Poor diaper genies.  They always get so much hate.  I don't know why it would gross someone out since it is basically a trash can that contains the grossness.  Better than it festering in my kitchen trash or outside in my shed (where we keep our trash can) in the August heat.  I will be proudly be using mine again :)

Also, I have a wipe warmer that I got as a gift for my first.  I probably wouldn't have purchased it on my own, but I used it and will again. No harm in having a warm wipe every now and then.

There are a lot of useless baby items out there.  But sometimes the thing someone swears makes no sense, is actually a life saver/kind of nice for someone else.  To each their own.

If you have a dishwasher it should get hot enough to sterilize the bottles.

I got a sterilizer b/c my dishwasher needs to be replaced, and it doesn't always get things clean. I did read that the bottles/nipples should be sterilized before you use them for the first time...and then after that washing with hot, soapy water is good enough.
