    Today's terrible joke:
Me: Hey baby, are you Swedish, Irish and English?
Baby: Yes, how did you know?
    Me: European!

Get it, because LO pees all the time?

(I'll be here all week, tips your waiters ladies and gents!)

    Bahaha! I love it!

  • 36 hours post partum... I've eaten everything I've seen. Normal? Who cares. I'm starving. Just sent husband in a midnight run to get me salad and crushed ice from the gas station. I was disappointed that he either doesn't love me or doesn't know me well enough to know that I also wanted a candy bar but didn't want to sound like a fatty by asking for one out loud.

Those who breastfeed on demand: do you wake the baby if it sleeps through a feeding?

Wake baby every three hours til she/he regains birth weight. Once birth weight is achieved, let him sleep as he wants.
  • Random question for @mellymar or any other animal aficionado. My pup is due for his topical flea and tick preventative, but I'm paranoid to put it on him and have him jump on the couch or bed and leave traces of it to later be picked up by LO. We also pet him all the time obviously. I feel like it's inevitable that the pesticide will reach lo. Am I being ridiculous here? That stuff is nasty!

Technically, yes, the stuff could get on other stuff which could then get on LO. But it only takes a few hours to dry. If possible, could you put it on right before bed and crate the dog or not let it into the bedroom for the night? If you do that, by the time you are interacting with the dog again in the morning it shouldn't be an issue. If not, maybe put it on in the morning then take the dog for a day at doggy daycare or a family members house so it can dry there? Or... Just put it on the dog and when you pet the dog be extra careful not to touch that area (you're more worried about not touching the wet spot and surrounding area, not the WHOLE dog) and make sure that dog does not rub against LO for the day, or hang out in LOs crib or your bed, etc.

Generally we've always said 'keep small children from touching the spot until it dries' and recommended the nighttime application, but I've never been specifically asked about a home with a newborn before (which thinking about it, blows my mind) so while I'm pretty confident the advice is the same, I've never actually discussed this scenario with a vet. Doesn't hurt to call the vet and ask. Or maybe the ped... I'm not sure who is the better resource for asking. Cause if your vet does not have children, they may not 'get' you and not be as helpful.

Still somehow treat the dog, tho. You don't want puppikins bringing in bloodsucking critters to your LO

I've worked with dogs in depth my whole life. My suggestion would be to give him the drops, and put him away for the day. Let him out by putting him on a leash and taking him to the door; same with the return. After applying, double wash hands with scading water and dish soap. Don't touch him or let him rub against things until the next day. That's the only way to keep chemicals offnof everything. Personally, I would just refrain from touching my guys and keeping him away from "baby surfaces".

ETA: or even better, follow @mellymar's idea of applying before bed
  • I have been told the same about regaining birth weight before they sleep through! @itsshayday

We went with an oral flea and tick med to avoid the grease with a toddler and baby in the house. It is what our vet recommends for anyone with small kids. It lasts 3 months. I can try to find the brand name, if you want.

I don't remember how long it lasts but there is also an oral product for fleas called comfortis. It does not protect against heartworms, tho, so if you are using a product like Revolution or Advantage Multi (which does heartworms, fleas, roundworms, hookworms, ear mites) and you switched to comfortis you would also need to add in some alternate kind of heartworm protection

Yes I used to because of my milk. I'd have to wake him up to feed even after he reached birth weight because I needed relief. Luckily, he was usually fidgety and ready, just not awake. Now I've either learned to sleep through, my body has adjusted to his schedule, or I'm just so tired.

I am hungry constantly. Almost worse than when I was pregnant honestly. My first 15 lbs came off fast. I'm hanging on to 15 and don't know how I'm going to lose it eating like this!

Thanks everyone, I took @mellymar 's advice and applied the meds last night and covered the couch with a big sheet and kept pup off our bed. I thought about the oral med but pup has had bad reactions to meds before so I wanted to avoid changing. So what I'm understanding is once the med is dry, it is not transferable/dangerous?

Once its dry its been essentially distributed over the body of the pet by the oils on its skin. So its not all concentrated in one spot, which is the major concern. I would still be on the lookout for your LO touching the dog then putting their hands into their mouth, but the idea of transference by the dog getting on your bed and your LO at some point being on the same covers is so very slim. If I were you I would personally only worry about my LO touching the application site on the animal then putting their hands into their mouth (there is still some dried residue there - the 'hairspray spot'). Or you touching the hairspray spot and then putting your hands in the mouth. Or hands in the eyes when they flail around like they do. Its one of those things where your mind can imagine things that can go wrong, but the likelihood of them actually occurring are so very slim and involve so many variables that must occur in order...

If it makes you feel more secure, you can bathe the dog 2 days (if you applied last night, you can bathe after tomorrow night) after applying without harming the efficacy of the medication. Then you know for sure puppy is all clean

  • I have been a thousand kinds of stabby today. There was traffic every which way to and from our house...we went to buy a washer and dryer at lowes, waited for 20+ minutes and no one showed up to the appliance section after being paged twice so we just left. And if we wouldn't have gone we wouldn't have spent 40 minutes trying to get home in traffic. So frustrating. WE ARE TRYING TO THROW MONEY AT YOU HELLO!!!

  • @dancegurl1118 really?! Well I'm gonna fatten LO up because I really wanna use it!
  • @katyertl I did too. I was just really careful and wrapped an arm around him while he was in it. I guess that kind of defeats the purpose, but my arms needed a break!
  • @katyertl I saw on Pinterest where someone rolled up a blanket to put under LO's bum to have them sit higher.

Really?!?! So you think I'd be able to use it then?!
  • @mellymar when I saw your name I thought of Wheel of Time-was that Perrin one of your book characters?
  • We named our LO after Emma Watson - so we get lots of Harry Potter stuff. :D

It's hard for me to say "go for it!" I'm just saying I did it very cautiously and it was fine. I think you can kind of feel if they are secure or not. I'd personally just feel it out. But that's just me!
