How much should an 8 week old be "up" during the day?

DD is always screaming so if she isn't eating or getting changed I'm trying to calm her down, which puts her to sleep.  What is all this playtime everyone talks about?  :(

  • I feel the same way, except LO is 5 weeks. The majority of the time he is awake is spent trying to calm him down or keep him from crying. He does like tummy time for awhile though. For some reason it calms him down. Maybe just because he's on his belly and it's comfy.

  • I think it depends on the baby! My LO is 7 weeks and some days she is hardly up at all, others she is up for 2 or so hours straight in the morning/night. She's only "happy" and playing for MAYBE 20 minutes until she becomes fussy. My friends baby is the same age and he is literally up ALL day just looking around and hanging out except for a 30 min nap here or there.

  • My sleep consultant said under 4 weeks is up for less than an hour, 4-8 weeks an hour and a half max. So I'm thinking past 8 weeks you wouldn't want stretches much longer than 2 hours...maximum!
  • My cousin shared this with me the other day. It's what she followed with her 3 year old.
  • My LO is very similar to yoursyours at 8 weeks. Some days she sleeps ALL day. Other days she may stay up for an hour or so but that's about it.
  • My son is almost 6 weeks abd he sleeps wheb he wants. Sometimes he'll be awake for up to 3 hours a time with only a half hour- an hour nap in between and other days he sleeps majority of the day. When he is awake, I try to have play time with him. It's just a matter of finding what he likes. Right now he really likes using his feet and legs so he may cry until you put him on his feet and then he's happy.
