Maternity Clothes???

Have you started looking/buying? Last time I had a hard time justifying paying for a 9 month wardrobe but ended up pretty miserable (with oversized ugly clothes). I also really did not like Motherhood or Pea in a Pod (they seemed very matronly and pricey). I'm probably going to try maxi dresses this summer but any other ideas would be awesome!!!!

Re: Maternity Clothes???

  • I would love some ideas as well. I have heard invest in a few good pieces and then mix and match from there. It is going to be interesting being pregnant in the winter as I hate wearing pants and bulky clothing.

I really don't like most maternity clothes. I bought 1 pair of maternity jeans when I was about 7 months pregnant last time (they were $10 at Forever 21 and fit perfectly) and maybe two shirts. The rest of my wardrobe I just bought in bigger sizes than I normally would. I didn't feel big or bulky. A few nice pairs of leggings, long tank tops, open front sweaters/kimonos, stretchy dresses and tunics, paired with boots got me through my whole winter pregnancy. I did invest in a maternity pea coat. THAT made me look and feel huge, but I needed it.
  • Gap & Old Navy has some nice things.... Old Navy is cheaper if you are having a hard time justifying the money.  And my girlfriend actually had good luck finding a lot of stuff at Target.

  • I agree target and old navy! But love the leggings idea! @LMMama
  • Has anyone tried the Bella band? I'm planning on picking one or two up to extend the usage of my jeans. I'm so disappointed target went out of business in Canada. They had nice and reasonably priced mat clothing. Maternity stores are so expensive and I don't think the clothing is all that nice, or good quality. Plus, I'm 6 feet tall, so most of my friends maternity tops fit me like regular tops so I'm really worried about finding things that will fit in 7 or 8 months anyway.
  • I agree with Old Navy. That is where I got the majority of my maternity clothes (Good price) last time and thankfully still have them! I cant wait to be able to rock them again, seriously. :)

  • Last time, I bought a few expensive pieces that fit well and just wore the crap out of them (a pair of corduroys and a pair of jeans). They lasted pretty well.  I bought cheaper tops to mix and match on the pants.  I also went shopping at GAP maternity during one of their "sale on sale" times and got a bunch of stuff for pretty cheap.  I definitely second the maxi dresses idea too- I wore them even in the winter with a sweater last time (and they weren't maternity- just really stretchy material).  I think I got a few from TJ Maxx or Marshalls and they held up very well. I'm going to try and wait for the end of summer sales to shop this time...

I hate pants too. I plan on wearing leggings, dresses and boots every day. Pretty excited I'll be biggest in winter actually

  •  I got most of my clothes from Old Navy, the Gap and Target last time. I was looking through my box of maternity clothes over the weekend and I have several short sleeve shirts. I remember wearing those when it was warmer and then layering with cardigans that I still wore well after DS was born in January. I might pick up a few more things here and there during my pregnancy---but it can be expensive. I will say invest in a pair of maternity jeans---you will still need to wear them several weeks after the baby is born before you fit back into your regular jeans. Watch for sales at Gap and Old Navy you can score some great deals on things.

  • Target has bogo 50% off on dresses this week. I'm going to get 2 maxi dresses if I can find anything I like. That will work for a while. I know they had a lot of clearance in their maternity section the last time I was there, so I need to check that out too.
  • I found most of my maternity clothes from DS this weekend and will use those but will probably need some warmer ones later. I live in Florida and DS was born in September. Can anyone say HOT much? I'm so glad this one is due in February! I'll be looking at Ross, Target and Old Navy.

  • I haven't wanted to spend much on summer maternity clothes, but I found a local FB group selling maternity clothes - I got several pairs of shorts for $3/ea! Best feeling ever!! (Esp since I feel about 6 mos preggo)
  • @bdaught I am jealous, thats an AWESOME deal!
  • Last pregnancy I rotated through a couple of pair of pants/skirts with different tops. For my tops I had different color fitted tshirts and tanks (some maternity, some not) and my non maternity cardigans or blazers over them. I also had a few stretchy dresses that worked up until the very end.

@ MsAmandaSt I'm 5'9, so not quite as tall as you, but Gap's maternity clothes come in long and tall.... might work for you.  And online ordering and returning is super easy.  Not sure if the free returns apply to Canada or not, but it might be worth looking into at least.

I used this with my first pregnancy and didnt have to buy ANY new clothes! Worked awesome
  • Bella Band did not work for me at all. I bought versatile tops (tanks, t-shirts, long sleeves and a few sweaters) and jeans (full panel, I didn't like demi panel jeans even in the beginning). Old Navy is cheap and had my favorite tops. I prefer my jeans that were a bit more expensive (from a maternity store).

My DD was born end of Jan '14, so thankfully I shouldn't have to buy any more mat clothes. I lived in maxi dresses over the summer (started showing by week 15). When fall hit I bought my first pair of maternity jeans...looking forward to pulling those out again, so comfortable! By the time winter happened my staple was an oversized/long/maternity sweater over maternity leggings and knee high boots. (Wear shoes you can slip on, because my DH had to help fasten/tie shoes that last month.)
Do buy a maternity coat! Oh and maternity underwear were one of the purchases I thought I'd never use, but ended up loving!

I am not a fan of most of the motherhood clothes but their jeans fit really nicely during every stage of getting huge with my daughter. I am looking forward to pulling those out again. I'm on the lookout for tops right now. Old navy has awesome maternity tank tops which was awesome for my August baby but this baby I need some winter gear. Also old navy's maxi dresses are the best! One thing I'll be looking for are longer tops this time. I was all belly and huge with my daughter. The last month none of my clothes fit all the way over my belly.
  • H&M has the cutest stuff.

Gap Maternity t shirts are the best I have found! I love them and actually wear them not preg too!

I shop Pea in the Pod clearance online.

I would invest in one pair of nice maternity jeans if I were you. And then some other staples like black skinny jeans/pants, etc. I am personally not a fan of the demi panel. Full panel is better and more adaptable throughout pregnancy.

Ooh, also, I like the Motherhood "Bump Start" line of tanks/shells. The non ribbed kind. White and black are a must for wearing under other tops (smooths things out, makes them not be see through as you expand) and other colors are good for wearing with a cardigan for a simple look.

I love maternity clothes and I am sad that this is my last time for it!

  • I forgot about H&M! Thanks for that reminder, now I'm excited!
  • I got some stuff from ASOS. But not worn it yet :) they are pretty and an ok price
  • Old navy, target, ross and kohls all have maternity. I went cheap with my first and regretted it. Definitely buying some comfy/ cute maternity clothes this time.

  • My son was a December baby and I didn't need warm maternity clothes at all. I was SO EXTREMELY hot my entire pregnancy. Although it was snowing and other people were cold, I didn't need a winter coat. I had a lightweight men's fleece jacket that was plenty for my short walk from the parking lot into work.
But I definitely needed maternity clothes. I bought most from Old Navy, Gap for tall pants, and Target. Now that I have one child, I've seen tons of maternity clothes at kids consignment sales though. Definitely watch for those to find really good bargains.

  • Pink blush maternity online has some reasonably priced trendy clothes. Old navy too.

I had my twins in March and wore nothing but leggings and tunic type dresses with boots. They were outfits that I could wear after birth and the dresses could be worn in the summer with skinny jeans or no leggings so I didn't feel bad about spending money on it.

  • I'm a jeans snob so I will definitely invest in my favorite designer jeans as maternity. I am thinking of buying a bella band to try it out since I've never had to use it before now. So far I can still fit into my current clothes, but some days it's more bloat so I opt for skirts or dresses that are stretchy and don't have a waistband.

  • Nordstroms looks like they have cute stuff. I'm assuming we don't have to worry about this for another few months though!
I'll definitely need to invest in a few nice work dresses though. I dress normal most days of the week at work, but on studio days when we're taping a show, I dress up.

  • Look for local Facebook groups. I'm on a mommy swap and shop and there are always people selling their gently used maternity closed.

  • I didn't buy too many maternity clothes, but I ended up having pretty good luck at Sears, which surprised me. The other thing that got me through the fall/winter was the body con tank dresses from Forever 21. They were $5 and I bought them in a size larger than I normally wear. I got 4 in different colors that matched a lot of my wardrobe. They were perfect layered over leggings and I could wear a lot of my sweaters and regular shirts for a lot longer because of them.

I got some maxi dresses from Target today. They were buy one get one 50% off. It's pretty hot here until like November/Dec MAYBE. So I will be wearing them for a long time! We also have a store called Styles For Less that has a lot of jersey knit maxis too! I think you can shop online at their store. No pants for me!!!

I use a Bella band. It worked for me until I was about 4 months along with my son and then I really needed maternity clothes. The Bella band really came in handy again postpartum as I was transitioning back into my pre baby clothes.

je5sc0 That's awesome.  Thank you.  I'll check out Target.
  • Love target. Old navy, kohls, jcpenney are also good budget friendly options. Also dont forget goodwill! I bought a pair of lounge pants there for just a few dollars. My friend searched Craigslist & bought bags of maternity clothes for cheap & just wore what she liked from them. I bought lots of short sleeve or sleeveless & used cardigans for work. Then after used the cardigans to cover up my nursing camisoles. :)
  • I love tanks and cardigans for pregnancy and they transition well for nursing. The Bella band never worked for me so I invest in a few great fitting pants and shirts that I can mix and match.
  • Most of my stuff from my last pregnancy came from old navy. I do have one maxi dress from Ann Taylor loft, which I LOVE. I will probably try to just wear non maternity maxi dresses trough the summer (most are stretchy and with an empire waist anyway). Also stitch fix does maternity boxes now, so I'm definitely going to order a stitch fix box for maternity clothes.

  • I found a super sale of winter maternity clothes at Gap on Monday.  I got a ridiculous amount of clothes for $60.

I have a Bella band and I love it. I wear it with my scrubs because it keeps them from rolling. And it allow you to wear pants you can't button.
I'm in need of a bathing suit. I don't fit into mine anymore but all the maternity ones are for very pregnant bellies
