January 2016 Moms

I'm so bad...

I ate a runny egg this morning. But damn did it look good! And I haven't eaten properly in over a month, so I had to do it (weird fun fact - dd loves egg yolks and potatoes ha!).

What "bad" things have you guys done?

Everything but booze. I'm just trying to stay alive at this point so all bets are off. This is also my second pregnancy so you know what they say about the poor second kid lol.

Yes exactly! This is my second also and I'm much less paranoid about what I eat than my first. Just trying to survive here lol

  • I had a salad with some feta on it and felt guilty the whole time.
  • not working out! im going on 9 weeks and feel so tired, and unmotivated. i know how good and beneficial it is to work out and stay active in pregnancy. and i was a very active before i found out (ran my 2nd half marathon earlier this year and 3 10k races) but i just cant it together to even go for a walk :/ really hoping to start feeling a little more like myself as i get closer to the 2nd trimester.

Girllllll good for you worrying about that, I should work out as I failed my 1 hour glucose and definitely don't wanna fail the three hour, but between lack of energy, yaking at very inopportune moments and the constant hunger, I just can't. Won't? Can't lol

  • @dobes1020 I had feta for the first time today too, but my host looked it up and Athenos (which is made is the US) said online that it was pasteurized. Maybe yours was too?

I had Jimmy Johns the other day. I just wanted it so bad and I know the likelihood of listeria is low. A little nitrates won't kill me.
  • Haha @Lizzie5831 my Mum always says the opposite... With the first eight of us she ate whatever she wanted cause there wasn't so much hype about listeria and stuff back then, but with her last pregnancy she was super paranoid and my beautiful baby brother has Down Syndrome :P
(we know they're completely unrelated, it's just a bit ironic)
  • Are you telling me I am not supposed to have runny eggs?? Oooops! Eggs in a Basket (you know, and egg fried inside a piece of bread) is literally one of the only things I can somewhat keep down, and I've had them over easy/medium every single day for at least a month. Well crap.

I didn't know they were a no-no either. I had delicious eggs Benedict last weekend.
  • I actually undercooked my egg yolk a little accidentally yesterday too... But still ate it. I know they say raw eggs are bad, but it was hot in the middle, so surely any germs will be gone?? (that's what I told myself anyway)

I think eggs... Like everything else on the damn planet, I swear, could contain listeria.
  • I refuse to hear the eggs bit. WTH am I supposed to do? NOT spoon up excess cookie dough directly in my mouth? Baking abuse!!!

I hear ya @lyannast , my BFF has her red card for EXTREME anxiety. She says she smoked all through her first pregnancy and has a normal 12yo boy. Following a loss, she did a "by the book" pregnancy... and now has an 8yo boy with major behavioral issues, SPD, and autistic traits.

So I'm not advocating that we treat the pregnancy no-no list like a bucket list, but there's quite a bit to be said for maintaining a physical and mental status-quo from pre-pregnancy.
  • Hell yeah! I'm still a little paranoid with some things but have relaxed on others already, simply because I was working myself up so much about everything that I wasn't enjoying anything. Also, having severe morning sickness, I've decided that if the only thing I think I can stomach is subway, I'll just eat it!!
Mind you, I get a hot sub. But apparently the salads from subway are dangerous too.. Bah.. Fear mongering, I swear. It's just too much. :/

Salami, completely uncooked, I know some people laugh it off and still eat these things but gosh I feel guilty!!! Even though it tasted like heaven
  • I don't normally eat no no foods anyway BC they're just not part of what I eat. Having said that, blue cheese is my friend and will continue to be. It's pasturized so I'm not concerned at all. And beer. Anytime DH has one I have my fair share of sips. Once second tri is here I'll have a glass of wine when I want here and there. I'm not one for torturing myself.
  • I've had blue cheese a few times.  I have NEVER been one to enjoy blue cheese.  I just started eating it in my salads and dipping my pizza in it maybe less than a year ago.  I can not go cold turkey on it.  I eat it maybe once every couple of weeks.  I also have my cup of coffee 3-4 times a week.  I have only ever drank one cup, and it's been my morning ride into work drink.  It hasn't really been an issue giving it up, I literally drink it on the days when I wake up like a zombie. Hoping in a few more weeks, that subsides a little bit, once I am out of the 1st trimester.  No booze, deli meat I have had, but I make grilled ham and cheese sandwiches so I am good there and no fish.  I've never eaten seafood anyway.
  • I ate the white Mexican cheese (that I've been told not to eat) a couple times in the first couple months, it's what I was craving so really I was just doing what the baby wanted. I ate it with my first pregnancy too and didn't have any problems.
  • Runny eggs, feta, blue cheese, sushi, lunch meat, caffeine, a sip or two of wine, and probably other things too. I ate all of these in moderation. You can get listeria from anything.

I was also pretty by the book with my ds. He is behaviorally and developmentally normal but I don't believe it had anything to do with my diet. I'm just more relaxed this time around.
  • My bad thing wasn't food. I ignored the signs saying pregnant women shouldn't participate in laser tag. I had such a blast and didn't want to give up my secret quite yet to a group of friends. My husband stuck by my side and helped defend me!

Good for you moderation is key (:
  • Exercise! I like to run fast. I still run fast (definitely over 140 bpm). But it relieves my stress in a way nothing else will, and I think that's better for the baby.

Thanks @mekaswifestyle I have a few pretty fabulous bottles of Rose I bought just before BFP and I have no plans on waiting until January to enjoy them :)
  • Ditto pretty much everyone else and food. I haven't drank but that's because I'm afraid after being home with my two kids by myself all last week I wouldn't be able to stop. ;)

My dad (a retired OB) has always said excessive drinking is the only thing I should refrain from. I use common sense. Would I eat that nasty sandwich from a gas station not pregnant? No, so I don't do it pregnant. I eat sushi in moderation, pretty much all soft cheese is pasteurized here and listeria is more common in produce.

Runny eggs sound really good right now...

Most eggs go through a pasteurization, so it shouldn't be too bad..
  • What's wrong with eggs? Most eggs you find in a supermarket have gone through some serious pasteurization (or ULTRA pasteurization), so the risk of getting sick is very low. And if the concern is cholesterol, it's time for you to read up on the recent articles on food and health! They've made a huge mistake since the 80's. Fats and cholesterol are not the enemy. Eat your eggs and your butter!

I have eaten pepperoni pizza, cole slaw, potato salad, and cold meat sandwiches at least once during my pregnancy. I don't them all the time and I make sure everything is well cooked except the cold meat sandwiches. :)

  • I think the only bad thing I've done is eat sushi but it was shrimp tempura. :-P I've been trying to take walks but my husband had to carry me home the last time. Lack of food + exercise = me almost passing out. So I haven't been exercising.
  • Eggs can contain salmonella which is why they shouldn't be eaten raw or runny. This includes fresh egg mayonnaise. Which I accidentally ate the other week and couldn't sleep all night because I was so stressed. I was vomiting all day, which is usual for me, but had myself convinced it was food poisoning not morning sickness.

Salmonella doesn't cross the placenta so, while it will make mom sick, baby will be fine. Listeria DOES cross the placenta and can hurt the fetus. Raw or undercooked eggs are extremely unlikely to contain salmonella these days, anyway. I forget the exact figure, but it's something like one in every 100,000 eggs.

I strongly suggest every pregnant woman read The Panic-Free Pregnancy.

  • @SummerOH I'm going to buy that today. Every time I eat something I think is fine I see something else about how I shouldn't have done that. My doctor told me no tuna and swordfish and that's it! But now every time I turn around I'm doing it wrong :-O
  • Love this thread!

At a friend's birthday party she had Veuve Cliquot (my FAVORITE) and I had a tiny glass with three sips. Totally worth it.

I was baking with DS yesterday and tasted the cookie dough, forgetting myself for a moment.

I have been pretty good so far, but I have definitely been tasting sips of my husbands beer when I want too.... I am very involved in the craft beer industry so that has been the most difficult part by far.  I am craving Mexican food all the time and I live in Texas so we have the best tex-mex ever! I am sure queso is not the best thing for the baby, but it sure does make me happy. I am sticking with my diet pre-pregnancy... mostly healthy during the week and cheat on the weekends. I am staying away from listeria concerns though... just for my sanity. Blue cheese sure does sound good... I am going on a hunt for a pasteurized version at lunch. I think the key is the stay happy and stress-free... so I am trying to do that the best that I can.

Recent comforts: A warm bath with epsom salt to calm my muscle aches (: Midwife said that was perfectly okay.
  • Not sure how you can do the egg thing...for me even thinking about eggs makes me want to throw up! I am slowly getting better at standing meats and sea food but I feel like I can never eat eggs again, even though I used to love them. :(
  • @summerOH have you ever had salmonella poisoning...I had it last Christmas and I thought I was going to die haha thanks for the info, I might check out that book. I think that the frequency of salmonella in eggs depends on where you live, I'm in Australia and know we had egg recalls recently.

No, but I did get e.coli from a salad at a restaurant once. Hospitalized and everything. I still eat salads, though! Pretty much everything is a risk!

  • My doctor said not to worry about deli meat. She said there hasn't been a listeria warning in it for decades. She said spinach and onions have recently, but doctors seem to forget to mention that
  • I eat a lot of subway. Precooked bacon bits in my salad, and now I'm about to fulfill a craving for chili dogs. Hotdogs are a no no, but I'm not listening.

I ate healthy and not healthy with my son and he's fine. I figure. If the plan for this baby is to have a genetic problem. Or downs, or whatever could happen. Nothing I do right now, will fix it. If it's the plan for our baby, then it's the plan. And not eating a hot dog or two, is gonna fix their DNA.

So. I am going to eat what I want. And fill my cravings when I want.

My doc is ok with sushi. I've been having it about 3 times a week. It's one of the only things that my tummy accepts!
