How soon is too soon ?

my baby shower was yesterday , I am currently 32w5d and I'm wondering if it's too soon to start washing all of baby's stuff ? Because I'm kinda in a rush to do it all , I have it so why not ?! It's kinda all just staring me in the face saying "wash me" lol
I been holding off on washing the few blankets and outfits we had already bought him months ago as it is .
So how soon is too soon ? Or when should I start washing ?
I also don't want to wait and then not be prepared if something were to happen and I go into labor in the next few weeks.

  • I already washed and put away most of the clothes we have for the baby. Im 33 weeks but I did this probably 2-3 weeks ago.
  • Am I the only one who doesn't wash stuff before they wear it?

I bought a lot from consignment stores, I'm sure it's been washed but I like knowing it's definitely clean.

Okay I definitely wash consignment stuff but new stuff I don't unless I feel like it has a particular smell or feels really stiff etc.

  • I washed and put everything away because our dogs were sniffing around and I wanted dog hair free clothes for LO.
  • I started washing stuff today.  Mostly because if I don't do it when the spirit moves me, it will never get done.  I originally planned on waiting a few weeks.

For some reason I only wash kids' stuff before they wear it.  My husband I never do it for our clothes.

Plus, most of the stuff baby #2 will be wearing was worn by #1.  It has been packed away and is a little musty.

New clothing is not clean. It can have residual chemicals on it from the fabric dyes or if the manufacture uses something to keep the item from wrinkling. .

This!! I used to work in a cloth making factory and there's tons of chemicals that the fabric goes through. It's a crazy process.
  • I would start now if you feel like it. With my first I didn't want to do anything the last couple weeks. All our clothes and things are clean and ready to go now. I am 29 weeks with twins though, so I am measuring full term already and am huge and uncomfortable.

  • Yes anything that I knew would be in season and work for us I washed! I have had 4 showers and wanted to be caught up. And her little closest smells soooo good because I used Dreft!

  • No, I don't think it's too early. I plan on re-washing DD1&2's 0-6 month stuff in the next couple of weeks.

I don't have dreft and most likely don't plan on purchasing it unless I absolutely needed too but i have ALL . The one that's for sensitive skin would that be ok to use also ? I wouldn't see why not ?
  • I've been washing some stuff each week. I don't think it's ever too early really.

Also, I used to work at Target. I really recommend that y'all wash any clothing from there before wearing it. :( Adults/kids will do gross things to clothing on the racks. ESPECIALLY wash the clothing if you bought it off the clearance racks. Those get the most attention from customers and tend to be items people have returned.

  • I washed everything the week after my baby shower. I was like 30 weeks then. I did hold off on washing newborn clothes, besides what I have planned as a going home outfit, just in case he is too big to wear that size.

Yeah I'm sure that's fine. I just love the smell of Dreft. :)

  • I wash everything in dreft for the first couple months, and I want to wait until I have everything I need so I don't have to do multiple small loads. I don't think dreft will get toddler dirt out of his clothes, so there is no multitasking

  • If you can, try to only was the first size stuff. That way if the baby never gets to wear something you can possibly still exchange it for another size, or even regift if baby can never wear it. Last time I washed everything and about 25% of the stuff he never wore because it ran big or small/ fit during the wrong season etc.

So far I have bleached/washed all the newborn and 0/3 onsies I will reuse from my son that were in storage. I haven't washed any of the new baby girl stuff yet I have bought or been gifted. I was thinking of starting to do it this week though along with blankets/sheets etc.

I wash all of my DS's clothes and then for myself and DH any undergarments, bathing suits, etc. I actually had found this article right after my MIL and I were having this exact conversaion about whether or not we wash our clothes before wearing them. I had sent it to her in an email because I found it funny that I stumbled upon it right after she and I were talking about it. I'm very hypocritical with what I do for DS vs myself though - we splurged on an organic mattress for him because of the off-gassing from regular mattresses, yet we did not get ourselves an organic one...I won't let him have ice cream for breakfast, but I sure did this morning ;)

Yes I wash all my and my husband's clothing before wearing. I will do so for my dd too. Some nice things that are dry clean only may get a pass.

  • I washed everything last week (33 weeks). I'm just trying to get some baby to-dos crossed off as I get closer to my due date and our summer gets crazier.
  • I've been washing everything as soon as I get it so I'm not overwhelmed!
  • I didn't even think about washing stuff.. Ugh...

  • My suggestion would be to wash 0-3m stuff now but not all clothes past that size. There were a few items my DD never got a chance to wear before she outgrew them, but I couldnt return/exchange them because I had removed tags and washed them.

  • This is my first baby, so I got anxious around the 30th week and washed everything and folded it. Got it all ready in the room by 32nd week. Just was too excited! But I don't see a problem with it being all washed and ready early.
  • I'm 33 weeks and I've already started to wash baby's clothes. I'd say go ahead one less thing you'll to worry about.
  • Im 31 weeks and totally spaced on this. Thanks for the reminder! Its on my to-do list now. Whew
  • I did a lot of thrift shopping with my 1st, so I started washing at 6 mths.
This time I've only washed the consignment stuff and a few newborn/0-3mth outfits. I don't want to wash it all just yet bc I need stuff to keep me busy!
  • I wash as I get stuff so I don't have a huge pile, plus you can organize what you have and know what you need

I've been washing DS clothes for weeks now. I have so many!!!!

I washed and ironed all her little clothes, blankets, bedding etc. I've put all her diapers in her diaper holder thingie that came with her bedding set. Her nursery is almost done and her bassinet is all ready in my room. I only did all this because I've been out of work for a while and I am bored.

It even says to wash baby clothing right on the tag. Don't you find it a little gross that you don't wash them? Not only are they laced with chemicals, but all sorts of peoples' hands have been on them. You don't know if they just wiped their a $$ and not washed their hands and went and touched the onesie moments before you purchased for your little one. Not washing clothes is like not washing fruits and vegetables. Just gross.
  • I've been washing as time provides, we have been buying from garage sales a lot. When I get enough for a load for the baby I've been doing it. As someone else stated, get bins and put your clean clothes according to size, this way it will be clean and ready when your little one is in that size. I started washing my first baby clothes around April/May timeframe which has been helpful, this way I know exactly what I have and don't have.
  • I have tons of clothes to wash for baby boy, all thrift finds and hand me downs. I haven't started washing them because I haven't gotten his dresser yet but I was wondering are you ladies hand washing or using your washer and dryer?

    Washer and dryer definitely.
  • As PP's said I wash everything that touches baby's skin before hand. I separated by size and only washed NB/0-3 months so far. I only have a very few NB size outfits because before you blink, they are over 8lbs. 0-3 is a completely different story many more clothes in this size, but all washed and ready to go. My first stayed in the range for the whole 3 months so I washed everything to be ready.

Washer and dryer , because I know it'll clean everything well . Weather it's hand me downs or store bought . Just because I don't want nothing to shrink or fade I washed everything in cold water and put my dryer on "air dry" or a low setting .
