Re: New Moms - Weekly June 6-13 Updates, Issues, Accomplishments

  • I've been struggling with very painful, blocked ducts on my right side since yesterday. FINALLY I just got it unblocked, OH THE RELEIF! Best feeling ever. (So bad I got almost 5oz in 5mins and had to get a new bottle to finish out my pumping session).

  • @ElRuby I tend to make bottles with 3 to 4 oz but I tend to throw some out during the day. I make a lot of milk tho so I can't keep stockpiling it in my freezer.
It does depend on how much your l/o will eat. There was one day last week where she clusterfed and took 8 oz in 2 hrs but I paid for it that night when her stomach was upset.
  • @virginiaunicorn11 DH feels the same way but...I remind him he doesn't have boobs and right now her only job is to eat and sleep. He is more frustrated that he cant do more since I'm a walking zombie (she eats every 2.5 hour for 45-60 min).

If he was waking her up I'd chop his balls off. It's cute he wants to be around her but not when she sleeping!

I thought I was alone! Mine eats every 2-2.5 too for at least 45 min. Sometimes I'll think he's done quicker but he's just taking a quick snooze before wanting more. Exhausted.

LO was born 6/9, and I guess I bruised my tailbone during labor. It is the absolute worst and nothing is helping the pain. anyone else experience this ever?? Also baby won't sleep unless she is attached to my boob! I'm exhausted while hubby sleeps soundly :-/

I had a bruised butt plus hemorrhoids... Doc prescribed me oxycodone, ibuprofen and Tylenol. Hopefully some version of that can help you!
Ok thank you. I will have to call Monday. They gave me Vicodin but that's not even helping.

Also did they give you ice packs for your ... Undercarriage? That helped too, plus strategic positioning my legs on pillows. Also try a bath, where you can take pressure off your bum.
  • Just gave LO her first tub bath. The 4moms tub was WONDERFUL. I don't know how I'd feel comfortable without that temperature gauge. And the fact that once I was done soaping her and rinsing I could drain the dirty water and refill with clean water in one minute. LOVE it!!!

I'm intrigued. We did our first non sponge bath last night in a traditional infant tub and it was kinda a disaster. Gonna have to either do some research on how to do it properly (clean/soapy water issue) or buy the 4moms tub.
  • I feel like someone mentioned a k'tan earlier... Tried to put baby in mine and it feels really snug. Anyone else using one? Maybe I need to go up in size? It says snug but man...

For those pumping... What size bottles are you making? I just hand pumped one bottle of 2 oz ... I think they usually eat about 2-3 oz per feeding. ... I haven't set up the electric pump yet but figured I was better off with smaller amounts handy to avoid waste.

In the morning, I get 4.5-5 oz from each breast, as the day progresses I tend to go back down to 2-3 oz each. I had been pumping every 3-4 hours; now that I'm attempting nursing again I'm only pumping in the morning and at night, but I'm still getting about the same amount per bottle as before.

That's amazing. I only get 1.5-2oz total when pumping. I drink tons of water and eat well/regularly. I want more!!!
  • @teather5 I have the ktan. It's supposed to feel super snug -- mine just doesn't feel snug at the head anymore if she's going nuts wanting to nurse I have to hold her head a bit. It also stretches with each use until you wash and dry and it snugs back up again. I'd rather have too tight than loose and not feeling secure.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

My son is 9 days old and I've been exclusively breastfeeding, but have to go back to work at the 6 week mark. When are other working mommas planning on introducing a bottle to their little ones?

In the NICU my LO was given a bottle before I was allowed to breastfeed him. I was worried about nipple confusion but breastfeeding has been working out fine.

I say do it soon. That way he gets used to both breast and bottle. You might also need time to find the right bottle that works for him. My cousins baby went through 6 different types of bottles/nipples before she finally took one.
  • @teather5
I have the 4moms tub also. It is pretty legit. LO slid around a little bit from side to side but he's super wiggly.

I think part of the reason I get so much in the morning is because the last thing I want to do at 2AM is pump haha. I usually go from around 11PM to 8AM without pumping/nursing and we bottle feed during late night feeding sessions because it's faster and DH can help. So, I have a ton of milk in the morning. This morning I was engorged and my sleep bra was soaked. Not fun, but I did it to myself!

Same here (even had DS on the 9th)!
He came too fast and it even bruised his poor face. I have a dounut pillow I sit on. It helps some but nursing is awful.

Some babies use feeding just to pacify. DS will suck a few times and fall right to sleep. It's super rough on your nipples and can cause blisters and bleeding. I'm trying to find ways to soothe him but it's hard to know if he's full.

I can't even get up and out of bed/couch. I know it's only been 3 days but I'm hoping it gets better next week. I can't do anything but lay here. :(

Aw, lady, I'm sorry. I'm pretty rough, too, and really pushed myself and made everything worse for two days. Let yourself just stay on that couch and heal. Xo
  • Neat - DH had his first freak out at me this morning! Apparently when I was sleeping from 5 am -10 am the baby was challenging. He's been awesome with her all along so it was a surprising outburst. He came into the bedroom and was like "You need to take her." What I wanted to say was "I assumed she was fine since you didn't say anything, so yes I slept". If he had woken me up and asked for help, I would have! Ugh, I'm just gonna chalk it up to his lack of sleep but it was a bit rude to insinuate that I was being lazy or something. How are everyone else's DH/SOs holding up?
  • Is anyone else having dry skin on their baby's feet and hands? We gave her a sponge bath last night for the first time at 13 days old - no soap, just warm water. Today her feet especially are all scaly although it doesn't seem to bother her. Dr. Google says it's normal, but is anyone else doing anything about it? I know lotions are not recommended. Perhaps it's the dry air in our home - we have A/C running because of the heat.

  • @hoodoll82 my pediatrician said aquaphor! We had a slight diaper rash that's location indicated something I was eating - butt paste and triple cream didn't touch it but aquaphor worked wonders. We then had dry skin on her forehead where some baby acne is and user aquaphor (per pedi rec) and it worked like a wonder.
  • @hoodoll82 LO has scaly, peely dry skin in her folds on her ankles and wrists. Nothing I'm too worried about, just letting it flake off.

Thanks! We've been using Aquaphor for diaper rash, and I now have it on her feet with some socks on. Friend have told me Aquaphor is good for just about everything and it looks to be true!

Haven't had baby yet, but was wondering how has bath time been for you all? And cleaning around baby's belly button? Most talk have been about bfeeding so just curious!!

We've done two baths so far, one at the hospital and one at home. She hates them haha. But cleaning around her belly button has been fine, we were told not to use alcohol and to just cover it with our hands to avoid getting it wet. Round 3 is today, hopefully it'll go well (and by well, I simply mean that we'll keep the belly button dry and that it'll be over soon - I know better than to hope that she won't scream her head off!)
Yep just keep it dry, no alcohol! It can disrupt the good bacteria and actually

Is anyone else having the issue of their little one sleeping in their own bed? Every time I lay DS down, especially at night, he screams. The only way I can get him to sleep and stay asleep is if he sleeps on my chest. I know it's a horrible habit but does anyone have advice?

The same thing happens with my LO. I can get him to sleep in the swing and bassinet during the day but at night he needs to be skin to skin with DH or me. We have tried swaddling but his hands break through even the nurses' swaddles. We tried the swaddles too but his hands break free and it's not safe to leave him in it over night if it's loose from breaking free. We have tried different sounds but those only calm if he is in our arms or going for a car ride and fussy.

I really don't have a good answer on how to address this because the literature seems to be contradicting depending on what you read and what philosophy you follow. So at this point I am taking pieces that work for my LO from the different philosophies out there. So in this case I am viewing this as part of the 4th trimester in that he is adjusting to life outside the womb and may need more cuddles in the evening.
This is not a horrible habit.. Newborns need to be next to their moms..
  • CillyMama said:

Ok gonna do a quick check in because my leisurely time on the bump is limited.

I'm glad some of you are clearing away the boob lumps! Woohoo.

    As for pumping...
After a nursing session I get a total of 1.5-2.5oz. Early morning when I can pump before a feeding I could get about 5oz total. I'm not too stressed out about it because according to kellymom.com it's normal to get .5-2oz. I wish I could find the link but it's really helpful.

Also, I just got a new pump! My medela PISA seems like it's starting to wear out. It makes this weird knocking noise. So I took a chance and got a pump not covered by insurance. After some research I got the Spectra. OMG! So much better! Way more comfortable, efficient and quiet.

I have a spectra too! I love it so far. Granted, I have nothing to compare it too but i've found it super quite and comfortable.

That's awesome you got 5hrs of sleep! I let DH sleep in this morning after he put the baby to sleep so I can take care of the toddler. After a couple hours I woke him up so I could nap. He complained about how tired he was 'cause he only had a few hours of sleep. I wanted to gauge his eyeballs out!

As far as the dry skin. I'm not sure. I know lotion isn't recommended but I've been using it anyway.
I can totally relate.... DH woke up (like at 7:30) while I was holding baby and entertaining DS and he was like grumpy and saying how he was soooo tired... I just looked at him but I couldn't even open my mouth for fear of RAGE coming out.
  • Next week DH goes back to work, which means I need to do the entire night shift (instead of half). The first time he says "he's tired" that week... oh boy...
