Triathlon

On February 2, I signed up for a sprint triathlon. On February 16, I got my positive pregnancy test after 3 years of trying and finally deciding not to have any more children. The plan has been to just take it easy and compete, but my training has not been what it should be. Between exhaustion, my gym closing down, 4 kids in school, vacation, etc., I'm further behind than I'd like to be and the triathlon is next week. I was also signed up for one in May, but they allowed me to defer to next year. This one won't. I haven't even gotten my road bike out this year to see if I can lean over far enough to ride it, but I'd just go with my mountain bike if that's the case. Any triathlon mommas want to weigh in with an opinion for me?

Re: Triathlon

  • No triathlons for me, but I was registered for a half marathon last month and ended up dropping my distance to a 5k. I wasn't able to run more than a couple times in my first trimester, so that was out of the question.

Can you give your hardest event a try this week and see how it goes? For me, that would be the swim. If I were you I'd try swimming the sprint tri distance and see how it feels. Or fit in a quick brick workout (is there such a thing?) to see how your body handles it?

If you think you can handle it, go for it! Otherwise maybe see if someone will buy your bib from you? Usually that's not "legal" according to race rules, but people do it pretty often...
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't have any advice, but wanted to wish you good luck!
  • I don't have advice either, but wanted to share how impressed I am! Go, mama, go! You sound like you know your body and what you can safely take on- so trust your instincts!
If you decide to pull out of the competition and/or sell your bib, maybe you can volunteer at the race to still take part? Or compete in just one or two of the events as you feel you can best handle? (Is that a thing? I've never done a Tri- just a runner.)
  • Will they allow you to change your race to a relay (with three people)? Since it's not something where you could change the distance, that's the only other adjustment I could think of making.

When it comes to a sprint triathlon, I've found that there are people who compete who hardly train at all. I actually invited a couple of my friends to do one with me a couple years ago, and the two guys thought they would be "good to go" without training in the swimming or biking (no joke). The biking leg was a mountain bike path, so that wasn't something many people had trained extensively for, but the swimming was in a lake. The boys had a helluva time with the swim, but they made it. I think that it sounds like you are more active than they were already :) I LOVE sprint triathlons for the atmosphere and the excitement.

You know well enough that with the triathlon next week, wherever you're at for training now is pretty much where you'll be. Get your bike down and do a ride to see how you feel. If it really doesn't feel right, don't do it. Find something else to do that day so you don't feel like you're mourning the loss of a planned race! You're doing something amazing right now (ahem, growing a human), so even if you can't compete in the race, you're winning. ;) Let us know what you do!

I just wanted to say let us know what you do!
My family is doing an Infertility 5K in August to support my SIL and I'm not sure how well I will be able to handle it. Mostly worried about the heat and being so far along.

  • I would check in with your doctor if you haven't! If they give you the green light and you want to, go for it! Just make sure to listen to your body and don't push the limits!

At this point, I can't drop to the relay and you can't pick and choose events to do. My kids are doing the kids' triathlon, so I'll still be there. I swam today. It wasn't pretty, but for just getting back from a long vacation full of poor-ish eating and only walking for exercise, I have to be happy with it. My lung capacity is WAY down. It's been raining since I got home from vacation, so the bike might just have to make its way to the trainer instead of the road. Thank you all for your thoughts, tips, opinions, and well-wishes. I have a few more days to make up my mind!
  • I did my first sprint tri last October and in the winter was training pretty religiously to get ready for 2 more this spring/summer-- luckily, I had not signed up yet. I first started suspecting I was pregnant, in fact, when I got really dizzy and nauseous while running on the treadmill in the first week of Feb. My GP suggested I take a break from training hardcore and switch to just swimming during the first trimester. I had no idea I would be *so* exhausted and my gym activity basically ground to a halt and was switched out for walking and prenatal yoga. Long story short, I am super out of shape now at 23 weeks, but finally have some energy and want to get back to doing something more vigorous so I am going to start swimming again. Honestly I would say if you haven't been training for all three and doing at least a couple of brick workouts I wouldn't do the tri. But I am a first time mom and probably overly cautious. At this point I could imagine doing the swim (slowly) and walking the 5k but if you haven't been doing any bike training that could be kind of rough. Depending on when the last time you rode was, your center of gravity could have shifted as well-- a whole other level of adjustment. I feel inspired by your determination to do it but I also feel like for me it wouldn't be worth the risks. Best of luck in your decision!
  • I did it. It wasn't awesome, but I did it!
  • That's fantastic! Congratulations!!
  • I'm registered to run my 5th consecutive Marine Corps Marathon in October .... Less than 1 week after my due date, and I know I'll have to defer. Best of luck to you!!!!!!
