round ligament pain? or something else? Help!

So I woke up this morning, went in my car and got a really bad pain on my lower right side. it's now a constant pain and it hurts more when I moves around, walk, or sit up. I've had what I though was round ligament pain before when I sneeze, laugh, etc but it wasn't this bad and it didn't stay. baby's head is usually on my right side, so could he be in a weird position? I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow. Should I call my doctor?

  • I get really bad round ligament pain. It hurts when I don't move a lot during the day. It's usually on my right side and hurts more when I move! My doctor told me it hurts me so much more because I have a small body and am so thin so I'm more likely to feel it.
  • I'm having the exact thing happening to me today! But mine is on my left side. The pain hadn't really gone away and when I press on it it really sore feeling. I really thinking of calling my dr tomorrow Hope all is well!
  • I had those for about three weeks straight. I would get out of bed and it would hurt bad! Anytime I woke up to use the restroom I knew pain was about to happen. Or when I would sit in my car...basically any time I would bend. One time the pain was four hours straight and I was in church. So miserable. Now the pains aren't as crucial and come and go. But my doctor said that because I was small to begin with that I am feeling my body changes more. I know you baby doubles in size from 18-22 weeks so maybe your little one is growing.
  • I called my dr today the nurse said its normal that's it's round ligament pain and can last quite awhile. She said she recommends a heating pad and Tylenol She said its like a pulled muscle since it is stretching ur uterus muscles. She said if it's any pain that u can time or spotting or bleeding is will u need call and get to the ER
  • @michellet78, is your pain in your hip area? I had a sharp pain shoot through mine a little while ago. Lasted about a minute and then I was good.
  • Could be the baby sitting on a nerve, could be a pulled muscle, could be growing pains... But you should still check with your OB.
  • If it hurts when you press on it, it could be a pulled muscle. I pulled one at week 19 that stretched my whole right side of my abdomen. The first day it felt like a runners cramp and the next day I couldn't move. I did nothing strenuous at all! It never hurts to ask your dr though.
  • Have you had your anatomy ultrasound yet? I had a cyst on my left ovary with my first two, and now now have one on my right ovary. They're typically nothing to worry about but was told if I get any sharp pains that don't go away, cramping, bleeding etc to go in right away. Sounds like maybe a pulled muscle though. My chiropractor told me that if I massage my round ligament every morning before getting out of bed, it should help with those sudden sharp pains. Start at the end of your hip bone and work your way up diagonally. It helps. ....hurts at first if it's really tight, but helps.

  • I thought I had horrible, horrible round ligament pain yesterday, so I tried to go home from work to rest. I didn't even make it home, just to my MIL's. After 5 mins she forced me to go to the hospital. Turns out, my right ovary twisted and tried to kill itself. But I'm talking excruciating pain. Pain so bad that I was nonsensically SCREAMING in the the ER until the morphine kicked in. So it may be worth calling your DR.
  • @BrooklynBroussard - thank you for your kind words. I was discharged today. Baby and I are fine, and I am hoping to never experience that again

thank you everyone!!! I woke up this morning feeling much better, so I'm assuming it was only round ligament pain!! You're all so helpful!
  • My doctor told me at my last appointment that I should call if I feel sharp cramps or stabbing pain in my side by my ribs. I hope to not have to call her for anything like that.
  • Yes I have sharp pains in my hip and down my lower back even into my leg. Once I got off work this evening I had laid down and tried to rest. It's actually not as bad now. Still a little sore but I been giving myself belly massage so maybe that is helping
  • Round ligament pain. I feel like everyone has their hurdle to overcome with pregnancy. Ridiculous RLP is mine and sounds like it might be yours, too. A bath then a warm heating pad make it easier to sleep after a rough day of it. Glad you're safe.
